I live and own a farm with a lot of Amish all around my area. more business is done by cash in rural American than cashless cities.
@WillaKissing When I used to live in Northern Delaware I often went to Boothwyn, PA, to the farmer's market, I bought a lot of meat, cheese, and treats, from the Amish, expensive but worth it.

Yes they’ll find some other system to scam or rob people through electronics
zeronguyen · 26-30, F
@MrsMONAKanful i think i use cryptocurrency so i'm not too worried
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
Absolutely not
Government. : Hacking is the biggest threat.
Government also: we need to switch our entire lives to a digital system for safety… 😑
ThomReidTheBlack · 41-45, M
No. For one it totally screws over the unbanked who are almost exclusively poor people.
Iwillwait · M
No, how are we going to be unsupervised?
4meAndyou · F
Nope. BUT...thinking about barter...how's the tax man going to track it? Hmmm?
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@HumanEarth I’ve heard that there’s another plan with different rules. Food won’t be taxed either.
HumanEarth · 56-60, M
Well, see there are going to raise taxes on something else to make it up what they are losing in food tax

Another problem with a cashless society is if you live somewhere that you have to worry about the government tanking your currency there is no recourse like even a bank run.
zeronguyen · 26-30, F
@ThomReidTheBlack i think i use cryptocurrency so i'm not too worried lol

No, not everyone is ok with banks and like here in the UK they are shutting alot of the high st banks which forces people to only have online banking, which is not fair on those that dont have access or feel confident in computers or mobiles especially the older generation.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@MrsMONAKanful well the majority here in the UK didnt and theres a bunch that totally refuse to deal with the new technology.
@Primnproper Even the homeless have smart phones and online access now through programs.
Primnproper · 56-60, F
@NativePortlander1970 yes becasue they want to, not everyone wants to be forced to use new technology especially when they are in their 80s..

In the UK we are now virtually a cashless society, certainly in all the larger towns and cities. Most places won't take cash anymore as it makes them a perceived target for robbery. The banking apps are now so sophisticated that there is never really a need for cash. Anything I used to do with cash I now do on my phone. I can transfer money to friends if we split a bill, pay off credit cards and buy anything at any kind of store with a tap. Public transport is all contactless payment and if someone writes me a cheque (old people like them) I just scan it into my phone. There are no charges or fees for any of these things. Even the street musicians take contactless payment.
This is broadly true for all of Western Europe so if you're outside the EU and planning a trip, make sure you ask your bank for a contactless debit card before you arrive, without one, you'll be in trouble.

No, I don't see how an endless amount of ones and zeros are healthy for an economy. How are we going to gauge the value of those ones and zeros? I think we are being bamboozled.
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
Sure, let's do trade and barter
@cherokeepatti One of the somewhat hidden pages in the old craigslist marketplace was bartering and trade, one story that made the national news was how one older teenage kid started a series of trades that within two years he went from a mountain bike to a Porche Boxer, no actual cash was involved.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@NativePortlander1970 I remember that. Reminded me of a student at the university in the early 80’s who bought up sports and concert tickets as soon as they came out and then resold them at a profit for cash. He made enough money within one year to buy a Trans-Am car, paid cash for it.

Pay for items using my debit card or eftpos card.

A cashless society is all well and good until the network that provides your electronic transactions goes down forcing you to use cash.
OldBrit · 61-69, M
I use very little cash to be honest these days. Cards just make life a touch easier for me.
zeronguyen · 26-30, F
