In the UK we are now virtually a cashless society, certainly in all the larger towns and cities. Most places won't take cash anymore as it makes them a perceived target for robbery. The banking apps are now so sophisticated that there is never really a need for cash. Anything I used to do with cash I now do on my phone. I can transfer money to friends if we split a bill, pay off credit cards and buy anything at any kind of store with a tap. Public transport is all contactless payment and if someone writes me a cheque (old people like them) I just scan it into my phone. There are no charges or fees for any of these things. Even the street musicians take contactless payment.
This is broadly true for all of Western Europe so if you're outside the EU and planning a trip, make sure you ask your bank for a contactless debit card before you arrive, without one, you'll be in trouble.
