Yay or nay

What's the big deal with people looking down on someone, who wears 2nd hand clothing.
I know thrifting is somewhat cool now days, but it's still got some stigma, the people that are into thrifting and people that are into name brands, designer, Instagram world are too seperate people and when they meet the person with more money looks down on others.

I personally don't care, I love charity shops, they clothed me for almost all my childhood, and most of my adulthood, it's just clothes🤷‍♀️what's important is the quality of those clothes, it's environment friendly to ♻️ it's cost efficient too♻️💰 had people look down on me because I buy 2nd hand shoes aswell, I don't care, at least I live within my means, besides my personal style is easily found in these stores🤷‍♀️
Are you into thrifting, if not why? If yes what's something you wouldn't buy from thrifts?

Some people think they are better than anyone else just because they can buy , or someone else can buy them name brand clothes . Truth is these are usually the people to watch out for because they don’t have a clue and thinks the world revolves around them.

There’s nothing wrong with buying second hand clothes, some are like new at half the price.

You can dress a person up to look fantastic but it doesn’t change the person under the clothes, and the same goes in reverse. They say don’t judge a book by its cover, clothes are just the cover of the person inside.

That is just my opinion. Be the best person you can be no matter what the cover is.

I've loved to alter and customise clothes since I was a girl, so 2nd hand comes naturally to me. In my opinion, stigma should be attached to 'fast fashion', where poor quality clothes manufactured unethically will end up in landfill weeks after purchase.

My daughter's school operates a 'swap shop' for good quality uniform items. It makes such sense with fast growing children and hopefully will teach them to be less snobbish about material things.

The idea of looking up or down at people for what they wear is something I can't wrap my head around. It's pure superficiality and a lot of people put a whole lot of weight on it. Don't get it.

I know a guy thats a millionaire times over, he donates and buys at the thrift store.
Never bothered me if it's something i like.
I’m not into thrifting. I understand the benefits of it, and I don’t look down on anyone who does it. I personally prefer clothes that were only ever mine. I grew up always getting hand-me-downs that never fit me and clothes from thrift stores or rejected donations because that’s all my parents could afford; and there was always this distinct smell to them even after washing. It’s a bad memory for me.
Hikikomoribabe99 · 22-25, F
@Colonelmustardseed I hear you on that, childhood memories too, for me I don't mind though, I do anything I can to get rid of the smel lol, but I get that.
I grew up with them and still wear them, because even though I live alone I'm kinda poor lol.

I adore thrifting. I get paid every 2,weeks and first thing I do is go to Goodwill for a couple of shirts, or a pair of shoes, or the very hard to find house hippo. Everything may be secondhand, but it’s brand new to me. And I always get lots of compliments on the clothes I find.
Hikikomoribabe99 · 22-25, F
@Mardrae I sell some clothes too and shoes, I always sell things in great condition and buy things in great condition, not everything's old and smelly lol
Mardrae · F
@Hikikomoribabe99 I have never had much luck selling things- I usually just give away all the clothes I don’t wear anymore.

I support thrifting, even though I never have used a thrift shop, I like the idea of it. If I was asked to start going to the thrift shop, I totally would. With my schedule there's not a lot of free time since I'm always working overtime.

I grew up getting hand me downs from my cousins and shopping at thrift stores. And even then...not very many pieces because we didn't have money.

still today, a couple times a year, I'll shop at a thrift store for some cute shoes, earrings, or sandals that I wouldn't buy full price for and used clothing. Sometimes you get some nice quality stuff that would cost 50 dollars at the store and you can get it for 5 dollars lightly used.

But I also buy some clothing new, because it makes me happy to have some higher end quality clothing pieces that look great on me. I take really really good care of these. They are treasures as well as clothing to me.
This whole 'style & fashion' thing amounts to a pervasive western religion in which I do believe, and to which I do not subscribe.

One of the pernicious aspects of this religion is the belief that particular articles or combinations of clothing and "accessories" make you a better or worse person. This belief is FALSE and HARMFUL.

If you like thrifting, be my guest. If you like dressing up or down, be my guest. If you like spending bushels of money on clothing, be my guest. But please try not to cast judgement on those of who do not subscribe to the 'style & fashion' religion.
I know someone who owns a second hand clothes store. She does a very good business. Most of her customers are in your age range.

The expensive name brand, designer clothes are really not all that. All you are paying for are the designers and the brand name, not the quality of the clothes. So, when people look down on others for wearing thrift or just less expensive clothes, that's just their way of showing their ignorance. I'll always buy quality first. If I'm going to buy into the company's name, I'll do it through stocks. Where I have a chance for gain.

just wash them before you put them on.

you can get vintage and newer quality clothes that way
IamCuriousBabe · 51-55, F
Thrifting is treasure hunting and bargain shopping all in one. You either tell your friends (the ones who are non-judgemental) about it because of the steals, or not mention at all.

With shoes, I bought 2nd hand pairs on occasion, but just the boots.
calicuz · 51-55, M
I have shopped in thrift stores in the past to try and a particular style and brand of jeans that weren't being made anymore.
I don't shop there anymore because all the styles would be too young for me.
I don't see anything wrong with shopping there.
Strongtea · 22-25, M
I’m not really into it (maybe for books) I prefer designer stuff. I suppose I do look down on those who wear thrift store clothing, I find it a bit tatty and depressing.
chocolateNcheese · 36-40, M
Thrifting is great if it’s for you or for gifts. I hate the people who round up all the good stuff and resell it online
how can you tell if they are 2nd hand. all my clothing was new at one time. I have coats i have had for years,,
ronisme1 · 61-69, M
I grew up on hand me downs and used clothes. I would not buy a Bed and undergarments from a used store
Goodluckwiththat · 56-60, M
I don't thrift, but I certainly don't care where a person buys their clothes!

The big deal is that they shouldn't.
Convivial · 26-30, F
Nothing wrong with it... It just makes sense
originnone · 61-69, M
I don't know one person who looks down or ever knows....

I love thrifting. The clothes are better quality 👌 womens shirts these days are basically see through. I dated a guy once who was embarrassed of me shopping there and wearing used clothes. He always made comments that my clothes were cheap while he had three whole pairs of Versace outfits he would wear constantly.
Hikikomoribabe99 · 22-25, F
@SkeetSkeet I noticed that isn't it crazy the quality of used clothes seems to be better than clothes on the racks now? Shein is true garbage it's all about how clothes look, the aesthetic than the actual quality, durability.
I've learned to no longer feel bad about what others say anymore, still sucks.
ViciDraco · 36-40, M
I like thrift stores. I'm not super into them, but I visit on occasion. I have no problem with second hand clothes, but it's also usually fun to walk around and see the other things they have. I've encountered so many unique things or simply things not found in stores anymore. It can be a lot of fun.
