Just a part of growing up, don't know at what age I stopped being afraid.

Come at me monsters !
Usually, I had no problem. But they featured horror movies on Saturday night that I watched. That, and a pretty good imagination led to a few sleepless nights. LOL

I was terribly afraid of the dark when I was younger, we lived in a very rural area, there were no street lights and really not very many porch lights. when the sun went down, it was as dark as a Grimm's Fairy Tale. I eventually got over being afraid of the dark by being in the dark. Playing outside, camping with my older brother or night fishing. Eventually it was just okay for it to be dark.
Mindful · 56-60, F
@Roadsterrider how old were you when you first went camping or night fishing?
Roadsterrider · 56-60, M
@Mindful About 4 or 5, my oldest brother was 22 years older than I was, he took me camping and fishing. Eventually I got the idea that the same things were out there in the dark as there was in the daylight.
Sitting in a corner of the room waiting for the monster so I could kill it. He never showed up.

My vote isnt up there.. umm.. this is kindof a strange thing for a grown adult to admit.. but.. i am typically a third shift kind of person.. i sleep better during the day.. i stay hypervigilant at night so in truth, i don't think i ever got over my fear of the dark.. i sleep better knowing someone else is awake and paying attention.. i took the role of the nightwatch and i take it very seriously. My case may not be typical but it takes all kinds. I have stopped three robberies in my life, saved a few animals, (possibly humans too), witnessed things noone else did because they were sleeping.. i guess what i am trying to say is that some of us don't ever stop being afraid of the darkness.. and those like me.. well.. we learn to defend ourselves and our loved ones from the thing that goes bump in the night. Some people can sleep through the night comfortably. I like knowing that i am the reason they can do so safely.

Yes until maybe the age of 10?

Later in life I needed to sleep in an almost 100% blacked out room during the day. (I was a shift worker.) Good thing we had a spare bedroom in the cellar.
Mindful · 56-60, F
@SW-User so sorry
SW-User
@Mindful Why? But thanks, anyway :)
Mindful · 56-60, F
@SW-User night shift work… I couldn’t do it unless I had to. But if you’re an introvert, I guess that would be ifeal

A fair bit. I used to worry about my mum, who'd work at night and I was left alone. This was between the ages of, like, 8-10 or thereabouts.

I moved to live with my big sister when I was 10 and the stability there helped a lot.
Mindful · 56-60, F
@AmberDuponte awesome outcome , but sorry about your mums work schedule
AmberDuponte · 26-30, F
@Mindful Thank you. Oh it was what it was.
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
Nope. But my little brother did and still does. He wakes up screaming or sits up and yells and goes back down again without waking up. My niece does this two. Mostly though she sleep walks to the fridge, strangely it only ever happens when she's dieting... (That is not a joke, but still funny)
Mindful · 56-60, F
@Thevy29 thanks for sharing. I’m a little worried why one child screams at night.
BeJeweled · F
Thanks to my older step sister telling me creepy stories at bedtime like if your eyes arent closed at midnight, the boogie man will get you! It took me years to sleep without hiding under the blankets.
Mindful · 56-60, F
@BeJeweled ironically she wanted to help you sleep. Lying is never good.
BeJeweled · F
@Mindful How kind of her then.

Yeah I was terrified. I was 'seeing' things in the dark.
I had to sleep with the lights on for a very long time when I was sleeping alone.
I think I suddenly stopped being scared in my early 30s.
Mindful · 56-60, F
@SW-User my daughter makes shapes out of objects in her room…they become creepy .
SW-User
@Mindful Same. I could see 'things'. I'm really sorry your daughter is having this.
Allelse · 36-40, M
Give them silver and iron, and remind them that in the old stories that one or the other is bound to keep whatever is lurking out there away.
Mindful · 56-60, F
@Allelse clever idea
Allelse · 36-40, M
@Mindful It's never a bad idea to stress that these things aren't real, but if they are, you've got just the things to keep yourself safe. :)
Penny · 46-50, F
i used to be scared of the dark until one day i realized nothing bad ever happens just because its dark. its just like the daytime but you cant see is all. nothing to be scared about
pentacorn · F
i remember going through a short phase of wanting the hall light on when i was about 5, after listening to the evening news for the first time in my life. i was fine before that and after.
Not in childhood. But now i struggle sleeping. Mostly alcohol helps to sleep more but it isn't good habit either.
Mindful · 56-60, F
Hopefully it’s a small night cap@littlepuppywantanewlife
Falling asleep, not usually. The occasional nightmare sometimes made me nervous, but reassurance from parents helped.
Carissimi · 70-79, F
I fell asleep in the dark as a kid, but had terrible panic attacks before I went to sleep because some kid at school said the world was going to end, and my childish brain was so scared for years after this. I was terrified of death, and couldn’t imagine not existing. It terrified me. I grew out of it, but I’ve hardly slept well since I was in my 20s, after the death of my soulmate. I need a nightlight now.

Mona86 · C

Mindful · 56-60, F
@Mona86 how old were you when you got over it
Mona86 · C
@Mindful i don't know i got over it
Mindful · 56-60, F
@Mona86 I hope you become fearless.
No because I slept on floor. Not kidding.
Mindful · 56-60, F
@NotSureAboutMyUserName hmmm… I wonder what made that less scarey? We’re others in the same room?
@Mindful sleeping in a bed alone in your own room is a privilege.

If the child is scared , you have yo slowly make them feel comfortable.

I don't know exactly how but children would get over their fear easier than adults.
I did, but not because I was afraid of the dark. I’ve always been an insomniac.
