I had to fire a family member

I offered my homeless brother a place to stay, in exchange for maintaining the property.

He did not perform any of his assigned duties, so I threw him out.

my sister's husband was making 2 million dollars a year. she spent it all. his dad died and he got depressed and started only making 1 million dollars a year and now shes crying poor mouth. me shakes my head.
helenS · 36-40, F
@Penny (gets her pocket calculator...) 2,000,000 / 12 = $166,666 every month 😐
No idea how I could possibly spend that much money every month, year after year. I mean I could buy luxury pasta for $10/lb instead of Barilla for $1.19/lb, but... hmmm

@helenS gambling, shopping, and living the high life
I’m sure you did the right thing. My sister was a druggie for a loooong time. My dad kept trying to help her, but all he was doing was enabling her. As soon as he cut off all help, she got her act together and she’s been clean for about 4 years now. My dad is currently letting a couple stay on his property in a camper. The husband insists only working in the summer is enough to get by. His wife is disabled. So they’ve found their selves homeless multiple times. This past winter they were living in a tent and my dad finally helped them get this camper. The wife has been wonderful…she does her best to clean my dad’s house and she even cooks him dinner. I highly doubt the man will find any work after summer ends. I just don’t understand how he can be ok living like that. They’re in their 50’s….

We all want to do right by people and help when we can. We can’t help when they won’t help their self though.

It's painful, but that's what you have to do with people who lie around all day drinking and getting high and watching cartoons on tv.

Very early in my relationship with the third ex, I suggested that we take in my brother in law, because he had no job and no place to stay. We let him sleep on the sofa in our one bedroom apartment. He drank all the ex's beer, would not look for a job, and watched cartoons all day while laughing like a hyena.

I WANTED to do what I thought was the right thing, but in many instances, doing the right thing is enabling bums to continue in their useless behaviors.

Then my older brother took him in, and my older brother had a cleaning service that would clean his house three times a week and my other brother was bossing them around, so they quit, so he had to kick him out. The point is, don't feel bad. You done the right thing. In fact you are actually helping him more this way. 🙂

That was indentured servitude.
eMortal · M
@QCDog2659 maybe I went too far, I apologize.
QCDog2659 · 61-69, M
@eMortal It is ok.
originnone · 61-69, M
@bijouxbroussard TBH....you know so much in this area, I try to impress you...just being honest.
Pretzel · 70-79, M
perhaps he'll learn his lesson - maybe not
but you don't have to be his keeper
QCDog2659 · 61-69, M
@cherokeepatti My other brothers and sisters are mad at me.

Oh well....
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@QCDog2659 oh well is right, time for them to step up to the plate then. They can give him a place to stay in exchange for chores and see how that works out.
@QCDog2659 Possibly because he'll
be at their doors soon.

Without knowing any of the background of WHY he was homeless in the first place, I wouldn't like to venture an opinion. My experience of homeless people - one of my friends helps to run a homeless outreach charity in Liverpool - is that the vast majority have mental problems and suffer from addiction in one form or another.
firefall · 61-69, M
@ArtieKat That was my experience in London, too

Quite different in the USA, where I'd say the predominant reason for homelessness is a run of bad luck - lose your job, then your credit rating plummets because you cant pay credit card bills,

or you have a serious illness, lose your job whlle in hospital, medical bills wipe out your savings, lose your home that way b/c cant meet mortgage.

And once you dont have a home, its really hard to get jobs here - even getting interviews is tricky. I've had up to half a dozen acquaintances use my address as a fake address to get around some of this, at times (currently one woman is doing so, plus there's one staying in my spare room while she tries to get another job).

The USA is brutal on the margins

I have a brother that at one time lived with me and my wife and he had chores to do. Well, he went and hired someone to do them, and I had to pay for it. 🤣 True story. I had to kick him out. 😅
helenS · 36-40, F
... but he's your brother 😐
Khenpal1 · M
@helenS well. just not paying
helenS · 36-40, F
@Khenpal1 What if I didn't pay and I get into financial problems? Who will support me?
Khenpal1 · M
@helenS Well , then you know from the beginning
akindheart · 61-69, F
good for you. it is all about boundaries...yours
QCDog2659 · 61-69, M
@akindheart Thank you.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
That’s the reason he’s been homeless it seems.
Very brotherly. It was a teaching moment. I hope he learns not to depend on you, once and for all.
firefall · 61-69, M
I assume you gave him several clear warnings beforehand?
QCDog2659 · 61-69, M
@firefall 20 years of warnings.
Starcrossed · 41-45, F
That must've been difficult. I'm sorry he let you down.
plungesponge · 41-45, M

@jshm2 According to other replies, the brother had the wherewithal to sell the house he was given. 😳
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
