That was indentured servitude.

@eMortal Are you kidding ?

@bijouxbroussard yup. Think about it. Indentured servant always had a place to stay, a meal offered by the “employer”, in exchange they had to work.
It’s a tricky concept but when you have a place you’re not using, having a family member stay there in exchange for work, is not exactly helping them. It’s an opportunity to have free labor. Pay them for the work like any worker. And if you really care about helping as a family member, don’t charge them for the place for a limited period. That’s family help part. If they choose to work for free, it’s really them also extending a helping hand.
But don’t mix things up, they’ll feel used because the area/place to stay does not grow in a day, but the amount of work can be very subjective. A lot family members take advantage of that.

@eMortal Indentured servitude generally came from fulfilling a debt. A family member who constantly needs help still has the option of seeking it elsewhere. And the family of someone who constantly uses them or mooches can stop agreeing to help.

@bijouxbroussard Indentured servitude, while terrible, is vastly different than slavery....
bijouxbroussard · F
@originnone Yes, I know.

@bijouxbroussard of course if they keep coming with the same issue, it’s a different story.
