I don't know what to do with my eyes

In a typical social interaction. When I am talking directly to someone, it's easy, you make eye contact. What do you do if no one is talking or no one is talking directly to you?? WHAT ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO DO WITH YOUR EYES?? lol. I usually pick a random point in space and stare at it. But this makes some people be like "what are you looking at?" It has made therapists think I am hallucinating before, even.

Seriously what do y'all do with your eyes if someone is not speaking directly to you?

@robingoodfellow It depends. Are you all standing in a group? You periodically look at the speaker, then the others, then away. You keep rotating these in a random order. Are you sitting in a group? Almost the same, except you can focus also on a physical object on the table, even tending to it at times.. if it's outside of business and in an informal setting. Don't do this in business generally though unless an impromptu situation arises such as phone going off and you need to silence it.

Is no one talking? If so, why there haha. But if there's a pause in a non-business setting (ie informal) then this is the time used to tend an object (device, book, writing, etc).

And no, don't look downwards or upwards except for a very brief second. Also, don't close your eyes except for one exception.. if you're trying to think of/remember something.. and only do that for a second or less.

@Magicianzini This is actually quite helpful thank you. I was worried it would be rude to look at my phone.

I do whatever I want with them. It’s rare when I look people in the eyes for a conversation. If I do so I’ve grown comfortable and accustomed to the person.

I choose to usually watch their hand movements. It’s a great alternative, especially since it helps you preemptively train for any shady characters you might run into in life along the way.
Look around a bit? Enjoy whatever is interesting in the room? Honestly this is not something I have ever thought about. Hopefully I will not get all self-conscious about it now!!!

I have a similar problem, particularly when the other person is a "close talker."

You’re thinking about it waaay too hard…. I just observe people around the room

look at your feet like you are so insecure you would die if someone actually talked you. And the challenge is on cause so many people will want to suddenly get to know you. Some for good and some for worse

@atlantic59 But I'm not insecure 🤨 I just don't know where to look if someone isn't talking to me at the moment

@Ananke sorry. I had the wrong fetish going. Hard to keep track these days. May I suggest dark glasses and maybe a white cane?

like what kind of question is that?? maybe close your eyes, or would you like a pic of me, to look at?
