Fifty miles.
Along main roads almost all in the countryside so no pavements outside of the towns and villages passed through.
These were an annual school events, held on the first day of the Summer holidays. It was back in the 1960s, before the notion of charity-collecting walks, so there was no sponsoring or money-collecting for anything.
It was just a voluntary challenge for the older pupils (14 and upwards).
The stewards and pickers-up of those who stopped part-way was by teachers and parents volunteering their services. On one such, one of the PE-teachers ran the course. He jogged past my little group - a school-friend and her Mum who'd decided she try it too - a few miles past the half-way point. Our trio did complete it, about 13 hours as I recollect, after the 6am start.
I think that was the same walk when the driver of a lorry delivering fruit and vegetables stopped to hand us some grapes. I recollect vaguely he said his daughter was one of the participants too.
No way I could manage it now....

About 10 miles.
Way back in my drunken days I took a vehicle without asking.
Walking home about 1 am, I was about 500 metres from home when I walked past this vehicle and saw the keys were in the ignition.
Stupid, drunken 17 year old me thought I would drive the rest of the way home.
I drove straight past my house and went for a ride out of town.
Going too fast, I failed to take a corner and ran off the road and was stopped by a tree.
80 metres below me was the Henty River, if the tree had not stopped me I would have plunged into the fast flowing river.
The tree saved my life and I walked back to town, which took about 4 hours.
The dumb things drunks do.

14 kilometres. When i had anorexia i would walk alot and i found this loop to walk which went through two towns. Id do that twice a week. Sometimes 3 times.
Mamapolo2016 · F
17 miles. Not recently, you understand.
alan20 · M
@Mamapolo2016 I actually did about 25. Like yourself ,not recently. It should have been twenty; I thought I'd worked out a short-cut!
Mamapolo2016 · F
@alan20 I've taken more than one long-cut myself!
alan20 · M
@Mamapolo2016 Easily done especially along narrow almost disused Irish roads. My companion wasn't too amused but being my girlfriend she was used to it.

I've walked further in a single session over even terrain, but the hardest walk I ever did was a traverse of the Presidential Mountain Range. The typical route is about 24.5 miles. But for us, from car to car, was around 31 miles.
HikingMan · 51-55, M
@alan20 That time was pretty awesome. I've done the traverse 3 times.
The time I'm talking about was 15 hours on a single summer day.
I've also done it in the winter, and in late fall with an overnight stay involved for the fall one, where it rained almost the entire time. The winter trip had 2 nights spent in the woods, and it was as cold as a witch's tit out.
But yeah, it's beautiful up there when you look out upon the world from it's rooftop.

Relatively recently, my wife & I did twenty miles as part of a fundraising walk. In my teens, backpacking in Maine, we once did over 16 miles in a day with full packs to get away from black flies, mosquitoes, no-see-ems, etc.
alan20 · M
@ElwoodBlues At least we don't have mosquitoes.

Oceanside CA to L Jolla. 25 miles. Must say that is the shortest distance possible. I actually did it climbing along the shore cliffs when needed which is far longer.
Isthisit · F
About 14km. I used to get all OCD with my exercise and would do walk a 14km track a couple of times a week. This was years ago now though. Wish i was still that fit.
Nanori · F
About 15-20km almost from one side of the city to another and it was my friend's fault, she kept saying "we're almost there"
