Fifty miles.
Along main roads almost all in the countryside so no pavements outside of the towns and villages passed through.
These were an annual school events, held on the first day of the Summer holidays. It was back in the 1960s, before the notion of charity-collecting walks, so there was no sponsoring or money-collecting for anything.
It was just a voluntary challenge for the older pupils (14 and upwards).
The stewards and pickers-up of those who stopped part-way was by teachers and parents volunteering their services. On one such, one of the PE-teachers ran the course. He jogged past my little group - a school-friend and her Mum who'd decided she try it too - a few miles past the half-way point. Our trio did complete it, about 13 hours as I recollect, after the 6am start.
I think that was the same walk when the driver of a lorry delivering fruit and vegetables stopped to hand us some grapes. I recollect vaguely he said his daughter was one of the participants too.
No way I could manage it now....
