Americans (USA): Who else is NOT celebrating the Fourth of July?

How can anyone celebrate Independence when We'd all have more rights in the UK?

I'm starting to think the people who celebrate Independence Day are people who celebrate taking away rights and want the sky to open up and rain guns. And want their own Republican Taliban in place.

I'm going to a pub and eating British food this year. I may still watch fireworks...but only because I like fireworks.
carpediem · 61-69, M
We’re celebrating having won independence from the awful British “empire”. And all Americans celebrate outside of a couple anarchistic clowns on the left. No one cares what you think. No one.
Scribbles · 36-40, F
@carpediem You think no one cares and only a few people feel this way. You have GOT to get out more... Where do you live? A town of 2000 people in South Dakota or Florida?

I'm eating British food, not sowing chaos and anarchy in a clown suit. Lol. Republicans are doing that.

Are you proud of what America has done with their "Independence"? Which parts are you proud of?
carpediem · 61-69, M
@Scribbles You’re clearly an imbecile and not worthy of my time

They are coming for contraceptives next I fear.
Scribbles · 36-40, F
@Colormegone And arresting anyone crossing the border for an abortion.
Colormegone · 70-79, M
Or even states in the future. @Scribbles
Scribbles · 36-40, F
@Colormegone Sorry I meant state or national borders. Any borders
BlueVeins · 22-25
I totally get where you're coming from, but I'm just gonna celebrate it anyway. As a practical matter, it's probably not great to completely cede the aesthetic of patriotism to the worst elements of society when this aesthetic remains popular to the vast majority of Americans. Besides, the family party is probably gonna turn into a circlejerk if I'm not there.

In any case, I try not to get too bent out of shape about symbolism, but if I did, I would say that the US was founded with clear intent to one day embody liberty and equality. That dream was fully realized neither then nor now, but it's a dream that millions of brave men and women have fought for tooth and nail over the past 200 years against the slaveowners, the KKK, the Pinkertons, and the Nazis. Things are going to get a lot worse before they get better, but if we fight hard like generations prior, that dream just might be waiting for us at the end of it.
Scribbles · 36-40, F
@BlueVeins I hope so. I hope we all fight hard for it. Because I'm worried this could get very bad otherwise.
BlueVeins · 22-25
@Scribbles Unrelatedly, I wonder how hard it is to build an incendiary grenade from scratch, that can be fired out of a spud gun.
Tython · 31-35, M
I wouldn't call it "celebrating", but I plan to fly the flag upside down during July 4th.
Tython · 31-35, M
@carpediem If you don't like my opinions you could always ignore me. 👍

@nedkelly I don't support any political party. The idea is fundamentally flawed.

I'm not celebrating a country that is working so hard to strip us of our rights. Nope.

I'm not celebrating a country that is working so hard to strip us of our rights.

Your rights are just fine, Snowflake.
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
@Budwick well since abortion laws justbwent backward about 50 years, no, Trumpie, they aren't.
Budwick · 70-79, M
@DearAmbellina2113 Ambles, if you were to pay closer attention to what actually has happened, you would discover that the only movement has been from federal authority [ which never had any authority on this matter] to the states [where it belonged all along]

Now, people you vote for will be responsible for this matter.
So, yea!

We just went through this on Friday (July 1, our national holiday) in Canada. Some Indigenous activists over the last couple of years have been calling for Canada Day to be cancelled and/or turned into a day of protest against the colonial injustices of this country. Given increasing public awareness about how horrible Canadian society has been -- and still is -- to the people who were here first, this has made a strong impact. Last year many public Canada Day celebrations were cancelled and this year many were toned down, and/or included a lot of gestures of atonement, and there were anti-Canada Day protests once again.

Personally I think we need a day to feel good about the country we live in. The land, the place, the people, not necessarily the political and economic system or the history, which were never much to write home about. I don't think Canada Day was ever particularly about the reason for the date (an act of the British Parliament in 1867 giving the colonies in what's now Canada a degree of autonomy) or about celebrating settler colonialism or any of that. It was about feeling good about this land we live in and the people we live here with -- and a good excuse for parties, concerts, and fireworks.

So I am of two minds about this politicization of the day. And like you I fear that proudly waving the Canadian flag is likely to be monopolized by our own right-wing nationalists who shut their eyes to the injustices I care about. I would like to be able to get back to a state of wilful innocence where we can just celebrate this country and feel good together one day a year. We have 364 other days to work on reform or revolution.

So I feel the same way about July 4th south of our border. I am glad you are going to enjoy the fireworks anyway! I love fireworks and some of the best I have ever experienced were in New York on a Fourth of July.
Scribbles · 36-40, F
@SW-User Thank you for the comment. It's nice and sad to know that it's not just my country going through this. Hopefully our right-wing nationalists don't take over the country completely. Expect my husband and I to come move to Canada soon...
SW-User
@Scribbles You are welcome here!
walabby · 70-79, M
@SW-User The same thing happens here DownUnda. Every 26th January the activists are calling it "Invasion Day". They might be right but never seem to put forward an alternative National day date...
TexChik · F
Do us all a favor and move there. Being a clueless liberal blowhard would be so much better there.
Scribbles · 36-40, F
@TexChik Whoever told you that Liberals want that lied to you.
TexChik · F
@Scribbles When you pull your head out of the sand, you might start paying better attention to who you support. But then again, if you had any ability for individual thought and common sense, you wouldnt be liberal.
Scribbles · 36-40, F
@TexChik Funny that, because I could easily say the same to you.
Shows how divided America is, huh? :/
Scribbles · 36-40, F
@cherokeepatti Funny that because right now it's the conservatives trying to control everything. Hell even some states what rights over their citizens outside of their states now.
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Scribbles That is what is called “Backlash” because now the people are seeing how far the liberals are wanting to go. Abortion wasn’t enough for them. They want the option of “post-birth abortion” to murder newborn babies too. They weren’t satisfied with the right to marry, it wasn’t enough. They want to shove their sexual acts into the faces of young children, even kindergarten age children, which is basically grooming them for pedophiles to take advantage of and ruin their innocence and their lives. The pendulum has swung the other way and they have no one to blame but themselves.
scabs · 51-55, T
Im not. We are going backwards there's not much to be proud of
Scribbles · 36-40, F
@scabs yeah :/
beaglehunter · 70-79, M
@scabs move away
spjennifer · 61-69, T
America has been a sovereign and independent Nation for 246 years now, the current situation while discouraging isn't the whole of our history. You are correct that things aren't going well lately and we should be concerned about it but this doesn't obviate the strides we've made in those 246 years, nor the sacrifices our ancestors have made to get to where we are today. If you choose not to celebrate, remember that the reason you are able to make that choice is due to the sacrifices of others who fought for our Independence and that at least does deserve to be celebrated...
@spjennifer That is precisely why I celebrate Juneteenth.
spjennifer · 61-69, T
@bijouxbroussard And it's ok to celebrate that day too. It's now been made a Federal Holiday too as of last year! Honestly, I was surprised it passed given the current revisionist movement within the Repug Party 🥴
@spjennifer Yes. Throwing us a bone that they can point to later, no doubt. It always makes me wonder what else they plan to take away.
summersong · F
Skipping all of it this year. It’s never been my favorite holiday but at least I have been able to appreciate the history of it. Now it’s just a joke
Scribbles · 36-40, F
@summersong I know, right? 😕
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
Probably same people bullying people to wear a mask and get vaccinated are celebrating independence.
Scribbles · 36-40, F
@MrBrownstone 🙄 Sorry, I didn't make illegal copies or press record on my phone to share WITH an idiot like you.
MrBrownstone · 46-50, M
@Scribbles So no proof. Got it.

Not celebrating. I usually grin and pretend to give a fuck but not this year. Police are on high alert and fireworks are illegal in my area due to fire risk.
Left renounces Independence Day on Twitter: 'Burn this country to the ground'

@Spunkylama Good.
@Spunkylama Michelle Obama would never say such a thing.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
Don't speak too soon. Our government is busy drawing up plans to replace the European Convention on Human Rights with a new national Human Rights Act. Knowing their past record and disregard for accuracy and detail, something rather important is bound to be left out 🤦‍♀️
Budwick · 70-79, M
Hey Scribbs - God Bless the USA!

Everyone that lives in the USA is living a blessed life.

Leftists don't care for the 4th or the USA for that matter.
Screw 'em.
fireworks are a pointless waste of money you go out and drop all of that and then jjust watch it burn up.
It's a holiday for terrorists.
smiler2012 · 56-60
i understand your point on the today united states. but this is a tradition where your fellow patriots fought too gain a free united states from outside influence [scribbles]
Scribbles · 36-40, F
@smiler2012 I can't bring myself to celebrate the sacrifices people have made in this country if this is the kind of backwards country we have. I'm just feeling very frustrated by it all. Perhaps the best thing I can do for my country is not celebrating 🎉 .but by finding a protest tomorrow to join to try and make those sacrifices worth it by making the country better for all the people living here. Idk. I'll maybe feel useful at least.
beaglehunter · 70-79, M
@Scribbles instead of thinking about the politics of both the democrats and the republicans think about the lives lost fighting for our rights including the right to vote into and out of office like i said earlier go visit Arlington and the tomb of the unknown solder and think about what we have here and if you dont like it vote if you want change. Think about how many other people would love to have what we have. This country may not be perfect but it is still the envy of most of the rest of the world and if that is not what you think maybe you should try living in another country that you think is better.i am not trying to be sarcastic but i love my country and respect what every service man or women has done for us
"Every child had a pretty good shot
To get at least as far as their old man got
But something happened on the way to that place
They threw an American flag in our face"

BackyardShaman · 61-69, M
I haven’t celebrated the 4th for years, but mainly because it’s so hot and people are so annoying I can’t tolerate it. I hate fireworks and I hate crowds.
As the descendant of slaves who were still slaves on July 5 of that year, I never really celebrate it as more than an excuse to spend time with loved ones, barbecuing.
This year there are no plans to even do that. A few of us talked about having something of a wake, with everyone wearing black.
I’m not originally from the USA, so it’s not something I typically celebrate since it’s not what I was raised on.
JoyfulSilence · 46-50, M
I am not. But just because I do not celebrate anything. And I do not like crowds and noise. And I have no friends and no family in town.
Colormegone · 70-79, M
Hopefully, we can celebrate this November 8th ( which SHOULD be a holiday)
caPnAhab · 26-30, M
Could be worse. I'll celebrate as long as my hands are untied
Scribbles · 36-40, F
@caPnAhab Um...It will get worse unless everyone does something.
TheLordOfHell · 41-45
I celebrate to remember the day we sent all the lobsterbacks packing ;) Nah seriously tho, I love my country, despite what it has become, and I think there will be better days ahead. So how could I forget her on her birthday?
beaglehunter · 70-79, M
why dont you fn move there even better try the u.s.s.r.
Fukfacewillie · 56-60, M
@beaglehunter The USSR doesn’t exist
MrAboo · 36-40, M
Working for higher pay on the 4th. It was a no brained in my mind.
Fukfacewillie · 56-60, M
I sorta went along with it, but now the holiday makes me ill.
Scribbles · 36-40, F
@Fukfacewillie It's not the first year I've sort of protested the whole thing. But I've never been more angry and Ill about my country.
Fukfacewillie · 56-60, M
@Scribbles Yeah, this is a totally different situation and very depressing.
Scribbles · 36-40, F
Are you just taking a post from a right-wing populist from last year, and changing a few keywords?
Scribbles · 36-40, F
@ImperialAerosolKidFromEP I've been eating at a British style pub every few years for the fourth of July since I was 22. I don't think it's unusual since it's always busy around the fourth of July there.
I am disappointed that a rightwing populist is doing it. Maybe I should go eat in a Ukrainian restaurant this year. Yeah that sounds good.
