Americans (USA): Who else is NOT celebrating the Fourth of July?

How can anyone celebrate Independence when We'd all have more rights in the UK?

I'm starting to think the people who celebrate Independence Day are people who celebrate taking away rights and want the sky to open up and rain guns. And want their own Republican Taliban in place.

I'm going to a pub and eating British food this year. I may still watch fireworks...but only because I like fireworks.

I totally get where you're coming from, but I'm just gonna celebrate it anyway. As a practical matter, it's probably not great to completely cede the aesthetic of patriotism to the worst elements of society when this aesthetic remains popular to the vast majority of Americans. Besides, the family party is probably gonna turn into a circlejerk if I'm not there.

In any case, I try not to get too bent out of shape about symbolism, but if I did, I would say that the US was founded with clear intent to one day embody liberty and equality. That dream was fully realized neither then nor now, but it's a dream that millions of brave men and women have fought for tooth and nail over the past 200 years against the slaveowners, the KKK, the Pinkertons, and the Nazis. Things are going to get a lot worse before they get better, but if we fight hard like generations prior, that dream just might be waiting for us at the end of it.

@BlueVeins I hope so. I hope we all fight hard for it. Because I'm worried this could get very bad otherwise.

@Scribbles Unrelatedly, I wonder how hard it is to build an incendiary grenade from scratch, that can be fired out of a spud gun.
