Smarter and educated are different things. Some people have an advanced level of education , mostly because their family influenced them in pursuing advanced studies, by giving them the support and encouragement they needed without having to work. Albeit, that’s not the reality for most people. People have to pay rent , afford groceries , healthcare , etc. For the majority of the population doing all that and pursuing a doctorate degree is only possible by getting into a huge amount of debt ( if you’re in the U.S. ).
But answering your question, I generally tend to admire cultured people, and feel motivated to learn more like @deadgerbil said. I used “ cultured “ here because being smart and knowledgeable are also different things. I’ve met extremely well versed and cultured people who made the most dumb life choices and lacked emotional intelligence. It’s good to be smart in every area of your life. And I too believe that there are different types of intelligences. Even a guy who never went to college can be smarter in some areas of life than the guy who has a degree in quantum physics.

@SW-User Actually, in many STEM fields, the grad student earns tuition plus a stipend by working as a teaching assistant or research assistant or similar as part of their grad studies. That's how many STEM people graduate without debt.

Nah it's an opportunity to learn something
@deadgerbil Not for all of us :/
Kwek00 · 41-45, M
@deadgerbil Agree 100%

@deadgerbil Pff, typical lib
(/sarcasm.. but someone made this for real, and they're out there voting 😬)

They are, infact, motivators to delve into the interesting yet untouched subjects.

I like reading hearing opinions of people who have a formal education in economics and philosophy. I get excited to meet people who are more educated than me in areas I have an interest in.
If they are more educated then me ( I have a BA in Business) in an area I am not that in tune with (like Psychology) I do not feel inferior but more think that is not applicable to my life.
So I guess for me no.

Does that actually make them smarter?
Education can brainwash people with absolute BS, the educational system isn’t all it appears to be.
When you have a bunch of criminals that fund universities etc, brainwashing people from a young age.
Science is based on lies.
Medical world won’t heal you.
History is lies. 🪬🤥

Not unless they feel the need to constantly show off their erudition to stoke the fires of their own egos.

@ChipmunkErnie In case you're wondering, my Grandfather had an IQ of 170, was a member of Mensa when it was still a prestegious organization, held four patents, and was published in numerous trade papers for home architectural drafting, electronics engineering, and computer programming. He would have been 97 this year.
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
@NativePortlander1970 No, actually I wasn't wondering. ;)
@ChipmunkErnie Just like Professor Stephen Hawking, my Grandfather hated braggarts, that it cheapened accomplishments.
BarbossasHusband · 36-40, M
Depends on their attitude.
Stephen Fry makes me feel inferior bc he talks as if it's something everyone should know (but without being a douche about it)
If they patronise, that's just annoying.
If they talk about things in a way I understand, and don't mind me asking questions for clearification, it's sexy af.

Nah, because I believe in multiple intelligences.
Someone might be great at math, but suck at language.
Not to mention, a degree doesn't necessarily mean you're the best candidate, at least in my line of work. I've know front-end developers with Masters degrees in Computer Science that can't grok concepts like mapping arrays in React, and I've known self taught front-end developers who get things like the Context API without any problems. And give versa.

Good question, I do feel jealous at times, in a good way, not in a hateful way, and I admire them. I don't see myself as inferior because it depends on lots of circumstances, but you know, some people are just better and I accept that.
Anrnearyou · 46-50, F
Smart is not always equal to educated.
Having the opportunity to be surrounded by people with more knowledge is always a great opportunity for self growth. I prefer to be the “dumb one” in the room because it means I’m about to level up.

@Anrnearyou Equally educated is not always equal to smart. Boris Johnson has actually done time as a visiting lecturer at universities...😷
Anrnearyou · 46-50, F
@whowasthatmaskedman facts! I have been in boardroom where I wonder how Harvard graduates can tie their own shoes and with people who can manifest, take action and mobilize mass who have no formal education.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Anrnearyou Indeed. I have dealt with University Vice Chancellors (Presidents) and CEOs who literally cant function without an assistant. The bubbles some people live in are amazing..😷

whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
They shouldn't . Knowledge of anything is a skill that can be exploited. Its those who wont or dont take advantage of that knowledge who should feel inferior....😷
Sutten · 36-40, F
Being educated doesnt necessarily mean smart. I know many educated people and they cant put theory into practice.
whowasthatmaskedman · 70-79, M
@Sutten Absolutely true. Wisdom is what you do with education..😷
BeefySenpie · M
Smart people tend to leave me impressed but never inferior. These smart people don’t always have to be formally educated, just aware of the ways of the world
Colonelmustardseed · 36-40
No. I just have to remind them sometimes that I don’t understand what they’re saying. 😅
SW-User
I probably wouldn't notice the difference, since I tend to feel inferior to everyone.

No I've been exposed to so many of them in my job I don't really care
OogieBoogie · F
I grew up around people who I now realize were geniuses ...I always felt dumb.
Then I realized that book smart wasn't the only smarts there were...and I felt dumber.
Then I learnt about emotional smarts and I felt a little better.
Smart is a relative term . Some people are geniuses but still dumb as fuck 😂

I grew up in a culture where being educated is the be all and end all and it's incredibly boring having a conversation with someone who can only talk about one subject

No. Most of the people I’ve met who let it show that they felt superior were consistently less educated.
