Smarter and educated are different things. Some people have an advanced level of education , mostly because their family influenced them in pursuing advanced studies, by giving them the support and encouragement they needed without having to work. Albeit, that’s not the reality for most people. People have to pay rent , afford groceries , healthcare , etc. For the majority of the population doing all that and pursuing a doctorate degree is only possible by getting into a huge amount of debt ( if you’re in the U.S. ).
But answering your question, I generally tend to admire cultured people, and feel motivated to learn more like @deadgerbil said. I used “ cultured “ here because being smart and knowledgeable are also different things. I’ve met extremely well versed and cultured people who made the most dumb life choices and lacked emotional intelligence. It’s good to be smart in every area of your life. And I too believe that there are different types of intelligences. Even a guy who never went to college can be smarter in some areas of life than the guy who has a degree in quantum physics.

@SW-User Actually, in many STEM fields, the grad student earns tuition plus a stipend by working as a teaching assistant or research assistant or similar as part of their grad studies. That's how many STEM people graduate without debt.
