It rather echoes what happened when integrated-circuits became commercially known, useful and available.

The simplest "microprocessor" a timer or motor controller, for example, was enough for the advertisers and journalists (most of them no brighter than they should be about science and engineering) waffling excitably about the system using it, being "computer controlled".
CestManan · 46-50, F
@ArishMell You have a good point there.

Of course there is this worrisome hype about AI taking over. Probably just an advertising tactic to make AI out to be something more than what it really is.
That way they can appeal to those who are afraid AND to those who are hopeful, like employers trying to eliminate all human workers.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@CestManan Thank you!

I agree - there has been a lot of scare-mongering about AI, based on wrongly thinking it intelligent in a biological way, but it does have serious potential problems.
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
By 2050 education it is suspected will largely be done via AI as it will be able to tailer education for each student and determine their needs. Students will be monitored real time for issues affecting their potential. The software will likely assist them with personal social issues too while maintaining confidence providing that the student is not a threat to themselves or others. This will likely also result in students with a better understanding of personal health and appropriate interactions with others.
Nitedoc · 51-55, M
@Tastyfrzz That's still socialism. It hinders freedom to choose.
Tastyfrzz · 61-69, M
@Nitedoc oh, i imagine you'll be able to choose whatever interests you and learn at an accelerated pace. Any language, math level, history, science... And it should be able figure out how you learn best. What teachers will do is monitor the results and suggest further courses. I think it will offer a lot more opportunity for less money and change from classes of size 70 to 1.
Nitedoc · 51-55, M
@Tastyfrzz That's very optimistic. I certainly hope you're right.
CestManan · 46-50, F
Like mentioned, mostly the latest buzz word.

Even if they WERE to create AI to be human-like, what would happen once AI started getting lazy, distracted, and demanding more of whatever AI machines want?

Thing is they have been talking about machines taking over since God knows when, probably 100 years now, but hasn't happened yet.

If they figure out a way to make machines self-aware, we are screwed but until then.
Nitedoc · 51-55, M
Machines cannot do anything they were not programmed to do, until now. AI is in it's infancy. It is to dangerous to keep developing it. The original scientist pioneers in AI have stooped developing it further because of the very real danger of what it can do.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Nitedoc We must indeed take the developers' warnings very seriously, but the systems are only "intelligent" in very crude, simple ways.

They work a bit like a computer chess-"player", comparing vast numbers of possible decisions and outcomes very rapidly, based on and forming "experience" which is little more than picking information that gives close matches within their programmed criteria. They are not infallible!

The computers still cannot do anything they were not told to do, by their human programmers, so perhaps it is not the programmes we should enquire into, but the identities and purposes of the people commissioning and writing the Artificial (Un)Intelligence applications.
Nitedoc · 51-55, M
@ArishMell I do agree with you. I like what you wrote. My problem is when we cross that line with AI to where the machines are sentient. When they do "think" independently beyond their programs. That will be the first time we couldn't control a machine. As I said AI is in it's very early stages now but it is growing rapidly. Do not assume only "good people" with good intensions are going to use AI once it's available. The bad guys want it for doing evil things too. Remember Nobel and his new invention, dynamite?
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@Nitedoc Thankyou! I think that the "evil things" point has always been so, though. Dr. Nobel only invented a more powerful version of what had been around for centuries - an explosive.
ElRengo · 70-79, M
It´s like ancient maps.
Some of them had a text on the unknown areas.
"Hic sunt leones" (there are lions there).

This "wave" of AI belongs (in a very nebulous sense) to one of the serious branches of it.
Sometimes impressive, not always, not all of it.
ArishMell · 70-79, M
@ElRengo Interesting comparison - yes, very much terra incognito and with its own lions and dragons.
ElRengo · 70-79, M
@ArishMell
......and very much like it.....with some real (potentially dangerous) and also some other inexistent lions, and dragons that may become dangerous only cos people belive in them.
About this specific tech resource what may disspell some of it´s problems is to know of what stuff is it made of and very specially who is handling the tool.
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
Dunno it’s weird.

There was thing on the news the other night were they said they were testing AI in school’s. and the students saying it saves them a lot of time googling stuff… I remember having to use a rolladeck to find a book shelf number!

From 2012 to 2016 it was all AI,Machine Learning, Deep Learning etc
ChatGPT just revived the flame.
I hate YouTubers.
Nitedoc · 51-55, M
@Justice4All Yes it is. It is still very young.
eMortal · M
@Nitedoc we’ll see. But AI is here to stay. The next step is to sell us trained copies of ChatGPT that will run directly on our computers. The perfect assistant.
Nitedoc · 51-55, M
@eMortal No mechanical device is perfect, incapable of failure. Computers are no different. Ever had a computer shut down, get hit with a virus or just freeze up? Don't put too much trust in a machine.
minxy · 46-50, F
It's a buzz word, popular.
Trying to bring more attention to whatever it is.
Because of course they have to use it incorrectly, like any popular word or phrase.

It is a bunch of old stuff in a gum wrapper now…data structures.
They learned how to use them in Computer Science for the killer app.

I get into the nuts and bolts of what makes it works.
They’re all all kinds of idioms that the programmers plug in to make it all fun.

I think it’s like in the 80s when everything was turbo. Or the 90s when everything was extreme. 🤷‍♂️

@Justice4All Really, lol. My favorite was the usage on the show Knight Rider…he’d yell “Turbo boost, Kitt!” At the car’s AI and it magically jumped like 20 feet into the air 😂

@CestManan yeah it’s all one big nothing burger
CestManan · 46-50, F
@urfavoriteahole here are a couple gimmicks from the past you might enjoy -
At one time television sets were advertised as "Cable ready" meaning you didn't need a separate box.

People and companies do this crap all the time - repackage something that already exists since God knows when and try to pass it off as something new.

Fast food places take their existing slop and re-name it as if it were new. Every day social media companies are "rolling out" some "new" messenger app or photo app.

Or a big one - how many times is it going to be the end of the world? In your time you have seen at least three (Y2K, Dec 21st 2012, the pandemic). I have seen twice as many.

anyways...
urfavoriteahole · 26-30, F
@CestManan it’s all so ridiculous lol
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
Because we are all heuristic creatures. 🙃😊
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Justice4All which is easier to use? 3.14 or a million digits more?

Would post a million digits if I could without getting rotten eggs thrown at!

Site limits me at around 17,459 characters anyway. 🙃

@Justice4All true, and that is being heuristic.

The short answer is being heuristic. Or imprecise if you will.

They wanted to outpace Apple and so everything starting with "I" was replaced by everything starting with "AI"
They have always been AI, but now the term has become more main stream.
