In what countries do they go to school on a Saturday, and why do they?

Some schools have Saturday classes for kids with behavior problems, or for academic assistance. In the first instance, it's as punishment. In the second, it's to help kids who are failing classes so they can pass, and graduate.

@bijouxbroussard Police officers are horrendously notorious for their personal grudges. Don't expect me to trust them or defend them.
@Crazychick My brother was a police officer for several years. I know that there are good ones and bad ones, like in any profession. But my point remains. You’d want to be treated fairly, I assume, without any personal grudges being a factor ?

@Crazychick
that the majority of people want the status quo to remain the same as it was when they were children, therefore most of us do not see change as positive
Well I'm the exception to that. I was subjected to both corporal punishment and simple bullying, victimisation and intimidation by my grammar school teachers in the 70s. I was so happy when education moved from beating education into kids to treating them with some respect.

Also when I was at school gay relationships below 21 were illegal again something I'm glad when my children were at school was eradicated.

I grew up in the 70s I'm glad my kids didn't is what I believe.

Public schools in Uk attend classes on Saturday morning because Wednesday pm is used for sport.
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@Moonpenny "They" would have made perfect sense. "They don't have a conventional school week in a public school because many of the students are boarders" sounds right, even more so considering you shifted into a "they" format in the next sentence ("Having sport on Wednesday afternoon breaks up the week because they have long working days which usually go onto 7pm, after which they can have free time"). Admit it, I am right about that as well. :)

@Crazychick The point I made was clear enough IMHO and was read as such by others on the thread. If you want to talk about semantics and syntax, I think you're deliberately moving away from the point of your question.
I've enjoyed listening to other people's ideas, experiences and opinions but I prefer to interact with people who post questions who are more tolerant and accept other people's views more readily and with much more grace.

I'd also like to point out that in many of your posts you do say...." Where I live/where I come from we think/consider blah blah blah ...... I know you're from the UK but please don't use this blanket term when you have no idea what other British people think. We don't need to be represented in this way on SW. I certainly don't.

You asked a really good question but as usual, when you don't like what people say, you trash your own good intentions 🤷‍♀️

@Moonpenny How do I trash my own good intentions?

I had to go to school on Saturday mornings. That was a long time ago, of course. I doubt it happens much now. As to why, well, one might as well ask, why not.
Moonpenny · F
@Crazychick Different schools, different timetables...
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@Moonpenny Yes, I know, but they are all Monday to Friday. One school might do maths on Monday and Thursday, another school might do maths on Tuesday and Friday, but they are still within the conventional limits.
Moonpenny · F
@Crazychick But all schools aren't Monday-Friday. However, in all schools the timetable is decided upon by government guidelines and then fine-tuned by the senior management of each school depending on its specific requirements.

In England. One public school near us always has held Saturday morning classes I believe because Wednesday pm is always sports.

Many Universities in the US do, or at least did when I was going.
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@bowman81 I don't class (no pun intended) University as "school".
bowman81 · M
@Crazychick Gotcha! Us old farts kind of lump it all in as Schooling. 🥴
DearAmbellina2113 · 41-45, F
In the US we had Saturday classes for people who were failing or who had behavior problems.

My Pakistani friend told me in her country she used to go to school every day, but they just had fewer hours on Fridays, which are holy days for Muslims like Sundays are for Christians. In my own country my parents' generation also used to attend school on Saturdays, but they got to experience the transition of getting Saturdays off too.
MartinII · 70-79, M
@Crazychick Well, I see what you mean. But I think some people of my generation, men and women, who got six of the best with the cane might disagree with you. For myself, I was lucky enough to avoid both Saturday afternoon detentions and the cane.
MartinII · 70-79, M
@Crazychick Yes, it was intended as a reply to your comment beginning “Not in school...” Typed it in the wrong place. Sorry.
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@MartinII I see a lot of this on here. People often post comments in the wrong place. If I do that I delete it and repost it where it was supposed to go. Lol :)

Both Muslims and Jews have Saturday’s off.
In USA many ethnic schools operate on Saturdays.
My ex wife had to go to Greek school on Saturday. I know Chinese and Korean Americans whose kids go to their schools on Saturdays too.

I don't know if it is traditional in Japan but in the UK a Japanese school carried on on Saturday...
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@Adaydreambeliever It's the first I've heard of it.
Adaydreambeliever · 56-60, F
@Crazychick okies.. they also worked from early morning to late at night..
In some Islamic countrie the weekend days are Thursdays and Frida.. therefore, Saturday is the first day of the werk..
I remember hearing in Canadian Inuit communities where schools are short staffed, they don't have substitutes, they have make up days
