In what countries do they go to school on a Saturday, and why do they?

Some schools have Saturday classes for kids with behavior problems, or for academic assistance. In the first instance, it's as punishment. In the second, it's to help kids who are failing classes so they can pass, and graduate.

@bijouxbroussard OMG that's terrible. And to think, they did away with corporal punishment in schools only to introduce something that's a thousand times worse.

As for academic assistance, we have special needs classes for that purpose and they fall within the regular school timetable.

@Crazychick We had detentions on Saturday afternoons. Worse or better than the cane?
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@MartinII Worse, worse, worse, a thousand times worse!
@Crazychick My understanding is that it's mostly in private schools, and not mandatory. The option for behavioral problems is suspension, and for academic concerns if the parent wants to hire a tutor instead on their own time, that's acceptable. And of course, the child can repeat the class.

Personally, I don't think detention is worse than being beaten.

@Crazychick Hmm. Have you ever been caned?
@MartinII Hell, no. Catholic schools still had corporal punishment when I was a child, and some of the nuns were very cruel. Detention was definitely preferable.
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@MartinII Not in school, they stopped doing it before I started school. In adult roleplay for pleasure, yes. But, masochistic pleasures aside, there is something much, much more sinister about Saturday detention. It fooks about with people's weekend plans. Surely a caning is preferable to that?

@bijouxbroussard In the UK when I was at school Corporal punishment was normal. Some Catholic schools were bad, but not in general worse than the norm.
@Crazychick But not everyone is a masochist. And these are children. The idea that some pedophile may be getting off on beating them is pretty sick. 😠
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@bijouxbroussard I didn't say everyone is a masochist, I meant that no matter how horrific one may find corporal punishment, a Saturday detention is still a thousand times worse.
@Crazychick I disagree.
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@bijouxbroussard If you think it's a good thing to be forced to miss an event you'd been looking forward to for the last 50 days just because of a detention, then you must be really masochistic, or sadistic, or whatever. 🤔
Moonpenny · F
@Crazychick The whole point of detention is to take away something from the child they really enjoy doing......compare it to naughty step, time-out etc
@Crazychick I still disagree. You're free to think what you want. So am I.
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@bijouxbroussard Can I just ask why you like the idea of being forced to miss something you'd been looking forward to? I've never met anybody who likes that before.
@Moonpenny That's actually a good point. Possibly missing out on an event to which they'd been looking forward would be incentive to behave.
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@bijouxbroussard True, but too many people get the blame for what someone else started. Once that happens, things have a way of getting out of hand.
@Crazychick Because losing privileges is more effective than hitting someone, once they reach a certain age.
@Moonpenny you have just reminded me that I was once grounded on a Saturday afternoon.Which meant I couldn’t go to the rugby. That was cruel!I would rather have got a hiding which was my more usual punishment!
@Crazychick So what would beating everybody accomplish ? Especially if you're also teaching children that violence is wrong.
Moonpenny · F
@TheSirfurryanimalWales But did you learn from it?
Crazychick · 36-40, F
@bijouxbroussard Losing privileges has been known to drive people to suicide. I don't think we should downplay the seriousness of that.
Moonpenny · F
@bijouxbroussard Exactly! Corporal punishment was ruled out of all schools in Uk by the mid-80s. I'm not sure about the US?
@Moonpenny No....I can’t remember why I was grounded. It was the only time it happened.
@Crazychick One of my sister's classmates committed suicide after she was beaten in front of the entire class. We never forgot that.
