In what countries do they go to school on a Saturday, and why do they?

My Pakistani friend told me in her country she used to go to school every day, but they just had fewer hours on Fridays, which are holy days for Muslims like Sundays are for Christians. In my own country my parents' generation also used to attend school on Saturdays, but they got to experience the transition of getting Saturdays off too.
