Getting old can really suck. Really.

So, i had a rotator cuff repair on my left shoulder ten years ago. It was doing great. Complete success. Over the summer it started to give me some trouble. But my repaired right shoulder did too. Wrote it off as arthritis. Right one straightened out. All good. The left one though...
Well, went to see an orthopedic surgeon yesterday. Xray shows bone on bone action.
He is fairly certain i need a shoulder replacement. Cat scan in two weeks.
Lets hope i grow some tissue in the next fourteen days.(like, i would appreciate some new spinal material too. But i won't get greedy)
The whole thing is a bit unnerving. I mean, shit!

I hope your surgery goes very smoothly. IDK if I've told you about this before, but you might find the rapamycin trials interesting. It's a drug used for organ rejection that's currently being tested for anti-aging properties in humans. Anti-aging properties have already been confirmed in mice, and it's very exciting to see where this might be going.
BlueVeins · 22-25
@MarkPaul What human studies on rapamycin's anti-aging properties have you found? I've looked all over for that shit and haven't found anything except the PEARL trial currently in progress.

@BlueVeins This is one site I used for a topic I was researching when I was still in school and trying to keep up with: https://www.thelancet.com/journals/lanhl/article/PIIS2666-7568(21)00062-3/fulltext

I first heard about mTOR inhibitors like rapamycin in an interview the actor Michael J. Fox gave about his Parkinson's. I don't recall what role, if any, he or his organization has in it, but he mentioned it as offering a potential exciting outcome for that could slow the decline of age-related diseases such as Parkinsons.

This is hardly definitive and these studies are in the very early stages, I know, but it does seem like there is promise, just not anytime soon.

@BlueVeins One issue with drugs and old people is that they may not have the capacity to know if they are better with the drugs or not, and with physical changes that go with aging, side effects are difficult to sort out.

In the few cases I studied the testing phase of FDA drug approval, I've noticed the seemingly tiny numbers of old people included in the testing population, and what seems like a lack of accountability for age when determining appropriate dosage.

I know what you mean about getting older. I keep getting told it is better than the alternative.Some days I wonder!!😁

I hope you get better soon.
Carla · 61-69, F
@Northerner between the two of us, we could maybe get at those things.

Are they suggesting replacement?
Northerner · 70-79, M
@Carla Not at the moment
Carla · 61-69, F
@Northerner that's positive.
MarkPaul · 26-30, M
Sorry to hear the news. I hope it all turns out okay.

Be careful if anyone suggests injecting bleach into the affected area.
Carla · 61-69, F
@MarkPaul im counting on the uv light.
Goodluckwiththat · 56-60, M
My neighbor had his shoulder replaced last summer! He was in his early 50's
Carla · 61-69, F
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Goodluckwiththat My nephew was in high school and needed shoulder surgery. He would wind his arm up to throw baseballs is probably the reason why. He did it in front of me and his sister told him to stop because it wasn’t long after he had surgery.
Hope it all turns out good but going to happen to all of us. Getting old beats the alternative.
Carla · 61-69, F
@Sojournersoul it does.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
Unnerving is an understatement.

I hope this goes well for you.

Yes, getting old can indeed suck sometimes.
Carla · 61-69, F
Thank you, @DrWatson.
I heard the recovery on that one is hell.
Carla · 61-69, F
@JustGoneNow typo, sugar💚
@Carla you always make me smile when you call me sugar. 😊
Carla · 61-69, F
@JustGoneNow makes me smile when i type it🙂
Nitedoc · 51-55, M
I have a torn rotator cuff in my right shoulder. I've seen the x-rays and MRI's. It's 70 % bone to bone contact now and It will only get worse. I'm not looking forward to the surgery at all. I'm going to hold out as long as I can, I hope.
Carla · 61-69, F
@Nitedoc i hope you do something while a repair is still possible. The repair to mine lasted almost ten years. And it was fine, really good, until it wasn't. But worth it.
Nitedoc · 51-55, M
@Carla I know I should. I probably will.
Carla · 61-69, F
@Nitedoc perfect.
HumanEarth · 56-60, F
My knees are pretty shitty, I do my own surgery to save the money.

Can't help it. I'm a DIY'er naturally and I'm cheap
Carla · 61-69, F
@HumanEarth huh...i am also about an hour from town. There is a couple of villages closer though.
And, i am also about four hours north of my childhood home.
HumanEarth · 56-60, F
I married a redneck country girl that fights like drunken sailor
Carla · 61-69, F
@HumanEarth very cool. The country girl thing.
The fighting thing though. Somebody could go to jail!😯

I hope I die young. I don't want to see my 80th birthday.
Nitedoc · 51-55, M
@FormerAtheist Damn! I hope I break a hundred.
Carla · 61-69, F
@FormerAtheist you're going to learn to cherish every day.
But live those days like you will die young.
Sappy advise from an old woman.
Carla · 61-69, F
@Carla If you figure out that tissue growth thing, please share.
Carla · 61-69, F
@Sojournersoul 🙂
Absolutely
@Carla Thanks. I need it too.
Heartlander · 80-89, M
Good luck with it all. Was there a physical therapy program to see how much relief/repair was possible with that alone?

My wife and I both had shoulder issues. In my case with torn ligaments, physical therapy gave me comfort but still left me with a small loss of range of motion in a direction that I don't use much anyway, so chose to not do a surgical repair. That was 15 years ago, and am still very happy with my decision. I still can't reach very far behind me to the left; but then, I don't have many reason to reach behind me to the left anyway, so ?

My wife wasn't so lucky. Her rotator cuff repair went well until the very day she got the OK to part with the arm/shoulder sling. She tripped and fell against a table, bad shoulder first, and the force was severe enough to pull all the new anchor pins out of their sockets. So a complete redo and another 8 weeks of healing. Long physical therapy and the best she recovered was the ability to raise her elbow to chin level.
Piper · 61-69, F
It surely can, especially when likely facing yet another painful surgery and recovery. For whatever hope and 'positive thoughts' are worth, I'm adding mine to yours...and the others who wish this wasn't happening to you. 💜🙁
Carla · 61-69, F
@Piper your thoughts have unlimited value to me pipes. Thank you.❤️
smiler2012 · 56-60
@Carla well everything you say is true but shoulder replacements are common and if it is the best answer as a long term solution but best too wait until you have had your scan
Carla · 61-69, F
@smiler2012 scan is mandatory. And i hope they find enough tissue there to do the repair. As a realist though, i doubt there is. We will see.
And yes, replacements are common. Im not really concerned about the destination, but the journey.
Has to be done though. I can't hardly use my arm.
SW-User
Getting old means losing many friends and relatives along the way. I recently lost my favorite niece. We grew up together. She was one year younger than me.
Nitedoc · 51-55, M
@SW-User Yes it is bad. The survivors tend to help each other along as they go. (For whom the bell tolls).
Carla · 61-69, F
@SW-User yes. One by one.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
I don't know what I would do I had anything like that happen to me at my age.

Hoping all the best for you.
Carla · 61-69, F
@DeWayfarer you'd find a way through it. We have no other choice.

Thank you.
deadteddy · 26-30, F
Sorry to hear that. I hope everything goes well for you!
Carla · 61-69, F
@deadteddy thank you.
Sevendays · M
I know what caused that.
Carla · 61-69, F
@Sevendays i do too
Sevendays · M
@Carla too many birthdays.
Carla · 61-69, F
@Sevendays exactly. And a good freefall.
novaguy2u · 70-79, M
Bad luck! Here's hoping for a good outcome.
Northerner · 70-79, M
For me ,getting old also means getting lonely. Even though I'm married the loss of my family and friends is getting harder to take. I know it is the same for everyone.
Heartlander · 80-89, M
@Northerner

ditto on that!

Yea. The older generation, everyone I knew as adults when I was a kid is gone. As are half of what I knew as friend, classmates and cousins.
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
I am so sorry about that. I just had a rotator cuff/Biceps tenodesis repair and Acromioplasty on Nov 6.

I really hope it’s not that bad and you won’t need surgery again.
@Carla me too for you. 🖤🙏
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
@Carla It changed my life for sure and I will push through a revision. The surgeon figured this one would only last 10-15 years and I am at 22 years so I am doing good.

I hope when you need surgery the pain isn’t too bad but at least you know it’s going to end and you’re going to feel better in the end 🩷.
Carla · 61-69, F
@iamonfire696 that's what I'm looking to. I can hardly use it now. And that can't stand. I'll be alright.
exexec · 61-69, C
I've had both knees and one shoulder replaced. The shoulder replacement was amazing. Even the doctors were surprised. I have full motion, no pain.

LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
Oh, God. Rotator cuffs are the worst. I was afraid I was going to have to have surgery for a while, but I guess mine wasn't in that bad of shape, because it started to heal on its own. But with bone on bone action, you just can't avoid it. I wish you the best of luck.
Carla · 61-69, F
Thank you@LordShadowfire. This will be my fourth shoulder operation. Both shoulders, at seperate times, were damaged in falls. Crushing injuries to tissue don't heal as well as straight tears. Im hoping the cat scan will show him enough left over tissue to repair it again.
He is doubtful. I am hopefull.
