Night time itching ?

I've been increasingly itchy at night.
Small itchy bumps on my arms.

I'm certain I don't have bed bugs as I have checked 3 times on different days in the middle of the night.

I washed my bedding a few weeks ago.

I've been using itch cream nightly for about a week.
Seems to be getting worse.

Thoughts, suggestions?

if not parasites, could be hydration (i doubt it. you seem too smart not to stay hydrated), hormones (strong correlation with nighttime itching, we make less hormones at night), a lifestyle factor (something your eating, drinking, coming into contact with) or an underlying health condition such as an autoimmune problem.

because of the range of possibilities, a doc is the best bet to suss it out quickly.

my first suggestion would be to stop using all soaps in the area and use a natural oil (sweet almond, coconut, etc...) instead of any creams/lotions after washing gently with lukewarm (never hot) water only. of course some soap may make brief contact when you bathe (shower preferred for this reason), just don't apply any detergents or creams directly to your arms or use a washcloth in the area, then pat dry. also you might consider using only scent and dye-free laundry detergents and softeners. that would be ideal in ruling out contact dermatitis, and it would give your skin a complete break to heal.

@pentacorn so use an oil to bathe? I know coconut oil is antibacterial but..

@iamnikki no, i realize my wording is slightly confusing, sorry. use only lukewarm water to bathe your arms, then gently pat dry. then apply a thin layer of oil. we have a natural protective flora on our skin that can be disrupted by bathing with soaps all the time and applying chemical-laden creams. your acid mantel (your ph level) may need a break to heal. it really sounds like contact dermatitis
Do you think you might have some kind of contact dermatitis? You might want to use soaps which have no dyes or perfumes. Also, don't use any scented laundry soaps or perfumed dryer sheets. Your diet could play a part, too. No caffeine might help. Instead of the itch cream, you might try a moisturizing skin cream, like Cera/ve. It does a better job on my eczema than the topical corticosteroid the dermatologist prescribed.

I hope you can pin down the cause, and feel better soon.

I was low on vitamin A and had a lot of itching and dry skin. One of my doctors told me to start taking it even though I didn’t complain about that. The bumps on my arms disappeared, my skin wasn’t itchy any more and the cracks and callouses on my heels disappeared to. All of it due to low Vitamin A. I take a good beta carotene supplement and a filtered fish oil supplement every day now. I also started using a facial serum with Retin A in it and that has helped.

@cherokeepatti thank you, I'll try it

Have you switched soap/shampoo/laundry detergent etc? Have you eaten something new? Are you getting enough water? It’s likely environmental. I go through periods like this when my skin is more sensitive than other times. Usually I’ll take an antihistamine and it goes away
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
@iamnikki are you getting enough moisturizer on your skin?
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@Jenny1234 um maybe. I'll make sure to do so tomorrow
Jenny1234 · 51-55, F
@iamnikki there are some moisturizers that work really well for itchy/sensitive skin. My son has always had really sensitive skin and has had good luck with a few different ones his dermatologist recommended : Eucerin, Aveeno for eczema, and O’keefe’s itch relief body cream.
Dehydrated, or just really dry air. or switched laundry detergent recently

I would try an antihistamine before bed.

Could be fleas if you have pets?

I was at work the other day and my arm got itchy like I had just been bitten by a bug. With itching it got puffy like a bug bite but no bugs in sight. Got the same thing on my thumb on opposite hand.

Relative living downstairs has cats am thinking it's fleas.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@twiigss nope
Straylight · 31-35, F
Maybe you could change your detergent?
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
Could be an allergen, what are you eating for dinner?
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@Longpatrol I doubt it, since I haven't eaten anything out of the ordinary
Longpatrol · 31-35, M
@iamnikki Well I have recently out of nowhere developed a mild allergy to poultry. Also itchiness so it could be something like that.

Maybe change your bedsheets to those that wick away sweat properly as well, could be a sweat rash.

Might be allergic to your bedding or pillows. Do you use feathers in any of them?
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@Tastyfrzz haven't been allergic to pillows

Wash your bedding once a week.
iamnikki · 31-35, F
@metaldog I've used Yardly and caress for years. No changes in detergent or lotions either
