The UK's socialised healthcare and welfare

Many brits like to flex against Americans, talking about how great it is that they have an NHS and all these handouts.

But then among themselves, they complain about the endless queues for the most basic of healthcare procedures, and the fact that every other person on welfare doesn't actually need it but treats going onto it like a lifestyle choice - some people want to be a teacher/doctor, some people are happy on a small welfare check to spend on drugs.

I'll take longish queue times over dying at 50 for anything with a 90% survivability rate because you can't afford treatment

Also weren't you Malaysian a few days ago? Why are you pushing republican propaganda then? 🥴

@TheEmperor I've brought up the term because it fits and describes quite accurately the subject being discussed.

Speaking further about the definition, or personal definitions beyond what is already easily inferred from the example provided and beyond what's needed to understand why it was used in this context (and the example fulfills this requirement very well) is just a way to stray this conversation away from the core point being discussed, probably/evidently because it's gotten to a point where my position can't be attacked in good faith.

@TheEmperor Healthcare is the point being discussed. Late stage capitalism is not.

The Brits love to moan about everything, it's just the way it is! Don't read too much into that. The NHS waiting times can be long depending on the specifics and how long you consider long, it's not black and white, and different areas of the UK differ in waiting times considerably, for the same procedures. But rest assured, if it is urgent to very urgent, chances are you will be seen and even operated on within as little as 0-14 days. The NHS is not perfect, and most countries including Canada, except for the US, have a good 'free' or very low-fee healthcare system, even in the 3rd world.

As for Welfare, there is always a small minority, that lives in less affluent areas that end up relying on benefits long-term, but most people are genuinely in between jobs and actively looking or indeed, working less than 16 hours a week, as a start, and still eligible for welfare, it is mandatory to prove you are actively seeking employment, in order to claim or you will be sanctioned. The others on welfare are on the equivalent of disability, which, even then, is quite stringently investigated before they are eligible.

I would be more worried about being denied healthcare based on the religious or moral standpoint of medics, which is legal in some US states, compared to a waiting time in the UK.

@TheEmperor if you are unable to join the denial of medical treatment on religious grounds to your post, or are anxious to only attack the waiting time for social medicine, then we can stop here.

Queuing for medical support is a billion times better than no support at all

Ah yeah the old playbook.

1. Take a useful public service
2. Repeatedly sabotage and cut it over the years
3. Wait for people to start complaining
4. Go "I HAVE AN IDEA"
5. Profit
Ryannnnnn · 31-35, M
@CountScrofula Right on indeed. The conservative party have been cutting funding more and more over the last decade whilst using it as an excuse to slowly and covertly privative it, which they have been doing.

@TheEmperor What's with the Roman Empire stuff?

I've never used it as a flex myself. The NHS does amazing things but they are under resourced. It's true that the waiting times can be problematic, even for very serious conditions particularly when there's a backlog such as after Covid. Private healthcare is available but expensive. It's increasingly hard to find any dentists who will take NHS patients, so much so that some people are resorting to extracting their own teeth. It's not a perfect system by any means. Yet we are still lucky to have it. Is it better than the system in America? That would depend on who you ask and how you define better. What I will say is that if you have a sudden, life threatening emergency then you will be treated and you won't have to be worrying about who is paying for your treatment. You won't be denied treatment until somebody pays. You will be treated. You will be kept in hospital until you are fit to go home. So it's not the worst system.

@TheEmperor No idea, my friend. Is it cheaper compared to the average Malaysian household income than UK private healthcare would be compared to the average UK household income? I'm not saying that it's not, I'm asking the question?

Brits have a MASSIVE superiority complex, especially over Americans. It's of the utmost importance that they flex on how their beliefs and systems of government are so much better than America and Americans.

tweedle dee and tweedle dipshit, this thread will serve as a monument to why the right should never be engaged intellectually

@sylvivresavie

So obviously you received the responses deserved.

the welfare part is mostly daily mail narrative generalisations that aren't true, mostly during Cameron's demonisation of benefits claimants which is still going on today.

You can't even pay your rent and bills, it's bills or don't starve. People can't afford drugs on benefits. Secondly with proper funding the Nhs is great, I'd say it's better than having an accident in work and owing years worth of wages to private companies.

It has waiting time because it's massively underfunded. We pay about 40% per capita of what Americans pay for healthcare.

Most us don’t give a shit about the US.

It’s got enough problems with crime, over politicised yokels, a foreign policy that guarantees them global hatred, and religious fanatics.

I literally just heard a British woman complain about tourists coming in and using their free healthcare,,,,so you would rather they die and/or go into debt. They complain about everything. For a country that has free healthcare you would think they would have better teeth.
