One small pet peeve…

It bugs me when well-meaning friends (especially those who don’t see how I actually eat) feel the need to police even my comments about food ("is that okay with your doctor ?") Having diabetes doesn’t mean you will never consume a gram of sugar or carb ever again lest you instantly drop dead. It means you take your meds, moderate your diet, exercise, lose weight if necessary, check your glucose faithfully and keep on top of your A1C (6.5 as of January 30, thank you).
I assume they mean well and just want to keep me around, but sheesh ! If I can’t even dream, what’s the point ? 😭

Well done to you!
It's the opposite for me
... people forget I'm diabetic

My life changed considerably about 18 months ago when I was prescribed Libre 2 Sensors. Being able to monitor my blood-sugars in real time means that I can decide when it's appropriate to indulge in something sweet. I gave up sugar in tea and coffee about 7 years ago when I was first diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes - I was never tempted to replace it with any of the synthetic sweeteners.

@bijouxbroussard I hope you are covered!
@ArtieKat I’ll know soon. A lot of plans don’t cover them—or they only cover them for insulin-dependent diabetics, which I’m not. 🙁

@bijouxbroussard I understand

At least they know what Diabetes is - no one ever heard of Celiacs - even my good friends in RL are still completely confused....on that note here's something neither one of us can have 😂

fun4us2b · M
@LordShadowfire IKR I can't eat it neither and it probably tastes crappy - who needs all those calories anyway?
@fun4us2b I've noticed since cutting most of the sugar from my diet that it no longer tastes good.

@LordShadowfire Same with Wheat for me....I think our taste buds adapt, which is good I think.

I think a lot of people are pre-programmed to expect anyone with diabetes not to be allowed sugar or carbohydrates. Think it’s mostly old school when the only way to survive diabetes was insulin. Now that medical science has improved testing and medication my assumption is that the patient knows their limits.

My A1C dropped, thanks to Ozempic, it seems. So I am more relaxed. Ozempic tricks the body to react more properly to high sugar, so I am not as worried. I worry about neuropathy, though. It has lessened as my sugars dropped, but I think some damage may be permanent.

Yet I have gotten so used to artificial sweeteners in my drinks that they do not annoy me as much. In a few cases, I think the artificial ones are better. For example, I put real sugar in my coffee last fall, after using only Splenda for 6 months. Real sugar was just not sweet enough any more for my tastes, LOL.

I wish somebody made Splenda ice cream bars, though. I miss ice cream bars.
@JoyfulSilence "Skinny Girl", "Rebel", Breyers "EDY", "So Delicious", "Enlightened" and "Halo Top" market low or no sugar ice creams.

@bijouxbroussard

Yesterday I found low carb ice cream bars!

I have already been buying Breyers Carb Smart ice cream cartons. They use "alcohol sugar" which I hope is not bad for me, like regular sugar is. The ice cream bars I found are the same brand, Carb Smart. I hope they are good!

I prefer ice cream bars over cartons because I cannot stand having to scoop out ice cream, especially if it is really cold and hard. Ice cream bars are so convenient. And the chocolate shell is nice! I hope the chocolate shell is Carb Smart, too!

A good friend of mine has Diabetes and his wife is the "sugar police", she watches every thing he eats and drinks and what he does too. She's constantly giving him grief about it. He's like eff it, if I'm gonna die, I'm gonna die. He's reasonably careful and has little choice but to eat properly, take his meds, monitors his glucose levels and exercises regularly. Sure he cheats a little occasionally but you have to be able to enjoy life somewhat. He's my friend and is old enough to know what he needs to do without me being in his face about it too. You do what you need to be well and ok with yourself too! 😊

I have type-2 diabetes. All the above is the same for me. The doc has me on 1500mg of metformin a day.
@badminton I love it when my dad complains about the size of some of the pills he has to take without water, because they are nothing compared to 1,000 mg of Metformin.
badminton · 61-69, MVIP
@LordShadowfire I take two 750mg pills per day. They are pretty big pills.
@badminton Yeah, that's even bigger than the two 500 mg tablets I take twice a day. Thing is, I've figured out that the aversion to dry swallowing pills is 99% psychological. We regularly swallow larger chunks of food than that, but because it's in pill form, our brains tell us we need water with it.

Brains are weird.
Annoying, but it is sweet that they care enough about you to say anything.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
Everyone is different. There is a range of things needed in certain amounts for everyone. Yet to say one person should do this or that really isn't appropriate. Because of those differences.

Some actually do need more water than others. To even say, EVERYONE needs two liters of water a day, isn't appropriate. It's a huge general figure that varies.
It's crazy that they should do this to you, as even from my limited experience of you - you know ur shit on this stuff.

Plus....if they really knew that we should ALL be monitoring our glucose rises and spikes, maybe they wouldnt be so quick to give advice.

Plus - health is a personal issue: what is good for one person, may not work for another.

Even non diabetic people should be careful of their blood sugar levels, sugar consumption and simple carbohydrate intake .

That is frustrating. I dislike it immensely when people comment on my food or try to. Get me to cheat on my lifestyle.

Sounds like you are on top of things. I’m glad you’re doing well
bookerdana · M
We're all connected🙄 and sometimes thats a good thing but not always..be well,my friend
I totally agree with you on this, B.
Livingwell · 61-69, M
Agreed my friend! 🤗
Fortunately, I have rarely had that experience, mostly because I'm "that guy" who always asks at restaurants if they have a nutrition menu with the carb count of everything. My Google history is such that if you were to grab my phone and start typing "carbs in"... chances are you'd find what you wanted.

But I get that. Because once I know how much sugar is in something, I can put together some kick ass meals from any restaurant menu or grocery store, and calculate it such that I can have a big old slice of cheesecake at the end of that meal. To a casual observer, that looks like death.

I am sorry, that’s frustrating. From what I can tell, you’re very knowledgeable about diabetes and it’s not my place to tell you what to eat.

They may just care a lot about you. Maybe you could tell them that you appreciate that they care but you have it under control.
