I've had that in the past and it's nasty. Aside from the physical symptoms it would make me delirious - I was unable to use a computer, for example. To be treated as very serious - a medical emergency. I had several bouts of it. I haven't had it recently.

I'm glad you followed up. I've heard of people getting this from a scrape or bee sting. It can be serious.

It looked like cellulitis ,I am surprised you had no other symptoms such as a fever , please take good care of yourself and focus on your recovery

Please do not blame it on a spider. They rarely bite and only certain spiders in certain regions can even cause illness.

It certainly looked like herpes. But with secondary infection.
