I stopped cooking with barley when we had a number of GF clients. Now that I only have myself to feed I have resumed my love of barley. You have my sympathy - it's hard when you have a medical issue which affects your diet, rather than some 21st Century fad

I miss it too. Had a whole case when I found out I'm Celiac. I wouldn't eat it if you paid me, but I sure do miss that flavor and texture, especially now that it's wintertime

@seaglass So many tasty and simple dishes to be made from barley. It is really healthy for the heart too, helping with cholesterol etc.

@cherokeepatti Yep, really fills out a hearty dish. I started using nutritional yeast to fill out some of the missing B vits from gluten grains

We had a soup night here last month, with THREE kinds of soup. One of them was turkey soup, with barley, and it was just SO delicious!!!

@4meAndyou We had a soup lunch one time in November before Thanksgiving. After another supervisor retired who insisted on a Turkey Dinner with sides that burnt us out because we had turkey dinners with family. We brought different kinds of soups, beef stew, chili, and crackers, cornbread and other sides. We wanted to show a Bulgarian lady who worked with us the traditional American winter stews and soups. She really liked it and so did the rest of us.

@cherokeepatti THAT sounds wonderful! The most popular soup at our Soup night was Tortellini soup. It was made with Marinara sauce mixed with cream cheese, and little cheese tortellinis mixed in.
I thought the turkey soup was much better, but everyone else went nuts over the tortellini! I thought to myself it would have been much better mixed with Boursin cheese!

I have beef and barely soup a couple times a month. I would miss it if I couldn't have it.

My wife is gluten intolerant, and apparently barley is the worst. So I no longer make soup 😞.

@ShenaniganFoodie That’s the type of rice that I usually cook. It doesn’t have the texture of barley though.
ShenaniganFoodie · 36-40, M
@cherokeepatti I use it
