What is going on at universities?

I don’t know what’s going on at our universities with students demanding ‘safe spaces’ so they don’t have to meet ideas which might challenge their own pre-conceived crackpot ideas. We’ve even had professors forced out for stating scientific fact rather than PC rubbish by these morons. Universities should be places where we are free to exchange ideas and ultimate places of free speech. If you can’t take that university should be no place for you!

why are old people so fucking annoying omg
@Ohbabe its funny that you believe I'm the one not getting it, when you're the one in denial and repitition.

For someone so bored and not interested, its wierd,, you keep replying 😜

Must be my charismatic personality 🤗

Safe spaces are generally like in clubs and therapy and shit, not in class rooms. You're brainwashed.

As I have said I have no problem with people having different opinions but it’s when people are hounded and bullied out that it becomes most alarming. @ninalanyon
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@Grvstu Of course. Who said otherwise?
Grvstu · 70-79, F
Well there are plenty of students appear to believe otherwise@ninalanyon
I agree.

Life is contraversial.

If one goes to university, it is to learn, not just facts, but new ideas and how to discuss them and debate theologies.

If one can't handle differing ideas at university level, then they should seriously reconsider why they are there.

I'm not perfect, I grt triggered by shit, it I can stand my ground and debate my opinions, beliefs and facts.

It's part of growing up.

This is nothing but an extension of childhood, primary school, molly coddling.

Safe places were once a refuge for the threatened.

Now it seems the whole educational system is expected to protect their students from harsh the reality of life.

But at university level, it shouldn't be a playground any more.

This new era of the adult child is toxic.
Parents controlling adult children
Young adults suffocated from developing.

Human emotional growth is degrading at an, alarming rate.

More than half the population is medicated by college.

What happened to "toughen up princess".

I don't understand it either, why supposedly highly-intelligent people who choose to go to university for career-winning education and to broaden their minds, should sink into amateur censorship of their own and worse, others' minds.

No-one should cause offence for the sake of causing offence, obviously, but there is no excuse for blocking even voicing or hearing differing opinions however uncomfortable. Such censorship is childish, petulant and cowardly.

Maybe the bullies are frightened they and others may find their opinions mistaken in fact. Or fear hearing other opinions irrespective of who is right.

Other perhaps are so shallow they think themselves the moral and intellectual guardians of others with whom they've probably never discussed the matter.

Agreed. Universities are places to challenge preconceived ideas and explore new ones, to embrace and explore the existing order, to learn the knowledge of past generations , to research new ideas and to mature.
Without free speech, we will stagnate. Without free exchange of ideas, we will end in a narrow channel of ignorance where only one path is allowed, and that will lead into ignorance as the teachers of the future have no breadth of vision.

If we discuss human male sexuality and why rape has gone on thoughout human history, should a gang rape victim be forced to sit though the class?
@Alison in REAL LIFE, no one has 200 friends,, you're estimating an oneline experiemce of people.

If which so many can be fake.

And as a person who has been raped and suffered sexual abuse and narcissistic trauma.... I get when one needs to escape.

But overcoming such trauma means learning to gain control by increments.

And believe me, one you need to worl to pay the bills... Such indulgences as a "safe place" don't exist in a work space.

In fact work can be just as toxic.

Adversity and conflict and abuse make us stronger, if You work on your courage and not give into fear.

I've had panic attacks at work,, and there was no one and no place for me to turn to.

And I need to pay the bills.

Reality is harsh.... It aleaus has been, life is pain.

Aint nobody but me gonna gold my hand or my heart to make me deal with it.

Its part of growing the fuck up.

@Alison There's always space for a compromise. I don't see why should such student be forced to sit through the class like that. Where I studied our lectures were not compulsory. It was your problem if you didn't come. Of course it wasn't tolerated well if someone left in the middle of the lecture but in cases like this people would understand. Another thing... if said student has issues with topics like this why would they pick a field of study where they have to deal with these topics if they are unable to approach the problem objectively and detached from their emotions? Maybe they should reconsider their choice of field of study then because chances are they will have to deal with it throughout their whole career.
ninalanyon · 61-69, T
@Alison No one can be forced to attend a lecture (although of course one might be censured for it). But if the student is, for instance, reading law it would surely be foolish to skip lectures because the lecturer might raise difficult topics.

Learning to understand and manage with difficult topics whether in physics, law, or biology is part of why one attends university.

Don't send your kids to these far left brainwashing factories. Save your money and send em to trade school, nursing school etc
ChipmunkErnie · 70-79, M
Intolerance, hyper-sensitivity, not sure exactly what to call it, but it is rampant in our current society. Just one small example: watch the news and wait until they have something serious to report and then listen to the newscaster announce "We have the video but we won't show it to you because it might upset someone." Even the news can't be upsetting these days -- reality must be denied if it is uncomfortable for ANYONE.
Dez580 · 61-69, M
i am saddened by so many undergraduates who show their imaturity at university that they will not listen to any opposing idea or view. they are simply wasting their money and time being at university. Students no longer read subjects anymore, they expect it just to be taught! However I find most post graduate and doctoral students still have individual minds and are inquisitve about other viewpoints, so hope is still there
OldBrit · 61-69, M
With respect I think you've misunderstood their purpose.

They are where marginalised individuals can meet to discuss their experiences of marginalisation.

I think you maybe confusing that with "no platforming" where those representing certain views are explicitly denied a place to express them
OldBrit · 61-69, M
@Grvstu open your mind to the view, held by many of us, that gender is a social definition sex is biology and different.

That's all I'll say on the subject
Grvstu · 70-79, F
I’ve no problem a lot of people have the view is that they won’t and I were the people all the different view. They tell us that we are not open minded but it’s them trying to shut people up@OldBrit
Msharsh · 46-50, F
@OldBrit rubbish
plankter979 · 51-55, M
99.9% of America is a safe space for old, white, straight Christians. Let the rest of us have a refuge.

@plankter979 my God what prejudice and no we wont
Msharsh · 46-50, F
I guess when Trump wins in 24 those safe spaces will be bulging with snowflakes and crybabies
This is another sign that college is worthless. A lot of those students won't even go on to get a real job. Colleges now want to push the 50+ gender BS and tear down God's word.

If you push back, you get cancelled
Yes....but free speech only exists in British Universities if you agree with the narrative.
Sadly.
Msharsh · 46-50, F
@TheSirfurryanimalWales that must end
