What is going on at universities?

I don’t know what’s going on at our universities with students demanding ‘safe spaces’ so they don’t have to meet ideas which might challenge their own pre-conceived crackpot ideas. We’ve even had professors forced out for stating scientific fact rather than PC rubbish by these morons. Universities should be places where we are free to exchange ideas and ultimate places of free speech. If you can’t take that university should be no place for you!

If we discuss human male sexuality and why rape has gone on thoughout human history, should a gang rape victim be forced to sit though the class?
Grvstu · 70-79, F
So how many people do you know this may have happened to ? @Alison
Alison · 18-21, F
@Grvstu 1 in 3 women have been sexually abused and 1 in 5 men
Also I talk to people, sexual abuse is painfully common
Grvstu · 70-79, F
Yes but does that mean to say that we can never discuss anything. The problem is that people like you like to bring forward extreme examples and then make general rules about it . It was the same when I was at university but it didn’t stop people talking and discussing it@Alison

@Grvstu I don't like the idea of people being forced too. If u can't stand it you're free to leave IMO
Alison · 18-21, F
@Grvstu say whateva you want but forcing people to listen isn't free speech it's forced speech
Grvstu · 70-79, F
If someone really feels they have a problem with the class and they shouldn’t be forced to listen to it if they give a valid reason. How many people do you know have actually had a valid reason like that?@Alison

@Alison in REAL LIFE, no one has 200 friends,, you're estimating an oneline experiemce of people.

If which so many can be fake.

And as a person who has been raped and suffered sexual abuse and narcissistic trauma.... I get when one needs to escape.

But overcoming such trauma means learning to gain control by increments.

And believe me, one you need to worl to pay the bills... Such indulgences as a "safe place" don't exist in a work space.

In fact work can be just as toxic.

Adversity and conflict and abuse make us stronger, if You work on your courage and not give into fear.

I've had panic attacks at work,, and there was no one and no place for me to turn to.

And I need to pay the bills.

Reality is harsh.... It aleaus has been, life is pain.

Aint nobody but me gonna gold my hand or my heart to make me deal with it.

Its part of growing the fuck up.

@Alison There's always space for a compromise. I don't see why should such student be forced to sit through the class like that. Where I studied our lectures were not compulsory. It was your problem if you didn't come. Of course it wasn't tolerated well if someone left in the middle of the lecture but in cases like this people would understand. Another thing... if said student has issues with topics like this why would they pick a field of study where they have to deal with these topics if they are unable to approach the problem objectively and detached from their emotions? Maybe they should reconsider their choice of field of study then because chances are they will have to deal with it throughout their whole career.

@Alison No one can be forced to attend a lecture (although of course one might be censured for it). But if the student is, for instance, reading law it would surely be foolish to skip lectures because the lecturer might raise difficult topics.

Learning to understand and manage with difficult topics whether in physics, law, or biology is part of why one attends university.
