What is going on at universities?

I don’t know what’s going on at our universities with students demanding ‘safe spaces’ so they don’t have to meet ideas which might challenge their own pre-conceived crackpot ideas. We’ve even had professors forced out for stating scientific fact rather than PC rubbish by these morons. Universities should be places where we are free to exchange ideas and ultimate places of free speech. If you can’t take that university should be no place for you!

With respect I think you've misunderstood their purpose.

They are where marginalised individuals can meet to discuss their experiences of marginalisation.

I think you maybe confusing that with "no platforming" where those representing certain views are explicitly denied a place to express them

No you are wrong. There is a professor was turned on by his students for no reason. One of their demands was lectures become a safe space@OldBrit

@Grvstu Well at the university I worked at that would be against policy and arguably illegal. I believe universities like Cambridge made this point in open evidence at a government select committee.
@Grvstu DAFUQ?!

Arent lectures supposed to be wjere you are challenged as a group of young minds?

Isn't it a space where you debate and argue philosophies and ideas?

Why was Kathleen Stock forced out of University of Sussex for stating science by these people?@OldBrit

@Grvstu there is a complex case.

On the one hand she clearly has every right to state her view but that is now at odds with the prevalent view on the student population. I can't speak for Sussex but I can see the issues for the uni of losing potential students, think about the income loss, so can understand why she may have been pressured into leaving.

Look at UCL trying to deal with its legacy of Galton and eugenics. Would he keep his seat in today's environment? I doubt it.

The issue now is that universities are large multi million or billion businesses but maintaining a good public image to the prospective customers (students) has become even more important.

Complex? Stating what science says? 😃
Maybe University should teach the Earth is flat ! I’m not concerned particularly with people holding some views but is the lack of willingness to engage in debate that worries me. People don’t appear to be able to debate issues. We had this at my university when I was young with the extreme left wing who threatened people if anyone disagreed with Lenin. The fact that Lenin was a murderer didn’t appear to enter into it. The point is civilised debate is the way to understand one another.

@Grvstu open your mind to the view, held by many of us, that gender is a social definition sex is biology and different.

That's all I'll say on the subject

I’ve no problem a lot of people have the view is that they won’t and I were the people all the different view. They tell us that we are not open minded but it’s them trying to shut people up@OldBrit
