The most people are 'told' how to live, the less capable we become of making our own decisions, meaning we need to be told common sense things, which becomes a vicious cycle.

It's also (as horrible as this sounds) an absolute fear of death (and discomfort). When it's really hot (or really cold), human beings can die as a result. That's not a nice thing, and I certainly don't mean we should be fatalistic about it (and I certainly don't want my or anyone else's grandparents, etc, to suffer during the heat), but it's what being living beings can mean sometimes. Which isn't to say don't be sensible (and there's nothing wrong with being reminded about hot weather sensibleness, given we see so little of it here!), just that it's not an excuse for the government (or the leaders of the o̶b̶l̶i̶g̶a̶t̶o̶r̶y̶ ̶s̶t̶a̶t̶e̶ ̶r̶e̶l̶i̶g̶i̶o̶n̶ the health service to fly into panic mode about either.

Ummm, many people have died in recent heat waves in Europe and elsewhere. It is easy to get preoccupied and not be sensible. I don't see any problem with the government giving good advice.
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
Yes, it is definitely needed. Go on holiday to any south European resort for ample evidence that British people do not know how to act rationally in high temperatures 🙄 But more to the point, it is making the population aware of the needs of other people more vulnerable than themselves to extreme weather.
That’s just a PSA, isn’t it ? We get local announcements here reminding everyone to check on older friends and relatives, because occasionally there are deaths due to heatstroke. There are also reminders not to leave pets or children in hot cars, because even though that also should be common sense, it still happens. 🙁
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@bijouxbroussard That is essentially what it is. People forget all too easily about the elderly who may need a little extra help.
Caraxes · 41-45, M
@bijouxbroussard lately over here in the UK everything is a conspiracy theory. Because they use different colours on weather maps these days some think the government and media are in cahoots over scaremongering us. Not sure what the intention of scaring us will achieve mind but that’s one take on the whole thing 😂
WildWings · 61-69, M
Exactly. We are the nanny state. I'm reminded of a bag of peanuts with the expicit waning, " May contain nuts." 🤣I think this Government is driving UK into the ground.

@WildWings To quote a part of an old song: "All the monkeys aren't in the zoo. Every day, you meet quite a few."
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
@WildWings That's not a government warning, it is caution and self-preservation from a big food manufacturer that does not have too much confidence in its production processes.

I have a friend who worked at a resort in the Caribbean that had a clothing optional section of the beach. He said they referred to the German tourist as sausages since they arrived in the winter and immediately hit the beach totally naked and took 2-3 hours of sun the first day.

Day two they looked like cooked sausages and were moving around gingerly with sunburned bodies and especially their genitals and their weeks vacation was spoiled. No amount of warning or caution seemed to have any effect.
Royrogers · 61-69, M
I agree with you. We have become such bunch of worriers. As you say just common sense
Caraxes · 41-45, M
I’m no fan of our government at all, however, if no warnings were made and then there were some serious incidents a lot would be moaning “why didn’t the government do anything”

I don’t understand why some people get so wound up over this. Has it been blown out of proportion? Probably! Some parts of the UK seen record temperatures, wildfires in Birmingham of course this will be newsworthy.
fun4us2b · M
You mean like all the plastic bags with printed warnings not to wear them over our heads 😂
senghenydd · M
We told you don't say you weren't warned

Seriously we didn't do that bad we survived, I'm from that part of the United Kingdom which is being told in a years time to slow down in built up areas to 20 MPH

Wales is fast becoming a Nanny State, remember when you visit Wales slow down.
Neoerectus · M
Not necessarily. Years ago, in US ( ID) I pulled my son from a baseball tournament when field temp reached 115-120 degrees with two kids taken out with heat exhaustion, but games continued. Other fathers thought i was crazy. 🙄
It’s because there’s a percentage of every nation that are nothing more than carrot chewing morons who will get themselves into difficulty and then blame their government.

if it's not 50Degrees C in the shade... you better not complain lol!
Insightful1981 · 41-45, M
They all see us as dumb sheep and treat us as such.
DDonde · 31-35, M
Sounds like you're looking for excuses to complain tbh
DDonde · 31-35, M
@SW-User That wasn't your point at all.
SW-User
@DDonde I'm not arguing with you. I and countless other UK citizens are fed up of being told what we should and shouldn't do , what we should and shouldn't say. Alerts for this , warnings for that. I just want to be left alone by this nanny state. Simple as that
Fluffybull · F
@SW-User People need to be reminded about the dangers of heat, of skin cancer, etc. These can save lives.
lumberjackslam · 41-45, M
i dunno what a heat wave in England is like. a little sun to strike fear in the pasty white of flesh
