Supertramp is underrated

Supertramp, the unsung heroes of rock, have been quietly crafting sonic masterpieces while the world was distracted by more flashy acts. Their music? As hidden as Waldo in a candy cane factory. With tracks like "Breakfast in America" and "Take the Long Way Home," they've been delivering musical gold while we were busy chasing fool's gold. So, let's give credit where it's due - Supertramp is like that secret ingredient in your grandma's famous recipe, making the rock 'n' roll stew unforgettable, and it's high time they got their standing ovation!
I mean…Goodbye Stranger is a fucking classic🤣

Take The Long Way Home," has always had a place in my life's soundtrack.
WiFiWitch · 41-45, F
@Iwillwait probably their most catchiest song
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@WiFiWitch Catchiest.... that's interesting.
'Dreamer' ? 'Forever' ? 'You started laughing' ? There's a few I think

I love Superteamp! Rudy is an exceptional song!

The album cover to Breakfast In America depicts the New York skyline constructed of plates, bottles napkin dispensers, cutlery, and mini cereal boxes. As well as woman in a diner waitresses uniform holding aloft a glass of orange juice on a saucer in one hand and clutching a menu in the other and sporting a nametag appropriately named "Libby."
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@Sidewinder 'Libby' was American actress Kate Murtagh.
She was a singer herself during the war years and had bit parts in several movies although predominantly performed in theatre productions.
She was in her mid-90's when she died

Fond memories of a concert in Avignon when they arrived in France in late 1979. There were so many people there they couldn't all get in. I can remember when John Anthony Helliwell announced one of their better known songs: 'When you go home tonight, take the long way home'
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@supersnipe 'Paris' remains one of the best live albums I've ever heard.
MrAverage1965 · 61-69, M
I totally agree, fortunately there is plenty of their music to enjoy on YouTube
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
Loads of great stuff on the albums.
Sort of 'raunchy rock' on the first two then Crime of the century.
Then it goes almost 'Folk-Rock' before Breakfast in America with 'singalongy' charty stuff.
Even Rick Davis' 'solo written' albums that followed after Roger left....all good
WiFiWitch · 41-45, F
@Picklebobble2 breakfast in america has some solid bangers, the entire album is good
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@WiFiWitch Critics often say they hit their creative peak with Crime of the century and commercially with Breakfast in America.
Which is probably true.
But when you consider Supertramp was a commercial venture by a Dutch businessman it's a wonder any of this stuff exists at all !
rfatoday · 61-69, M
One of my favorite bands back in the late 70's and 80's. Breakfast in America was a classic and as an audiophile, I can say also a well-engineered and clean recording, compared to other rock albums back then. Rudy was one of my favorites. I have a DVD of their Paris concert and there's a well done video to Rudy done live.
IDK about everyone else but because of you, I feel like I’ve listened to more Supertramp in the last 12 hours than I have in the last 30+ years🤣🤣🤣
@WiFiWitch well…you’ve done your part!😅

What’s next on the playlist?
WiFiWitch · 41-45, F
@Haniazed probably genesis
@WiFiWitch Awesome!!!😊

I walked out on a girl who was interested in me in college when she prepared to put on a Supertramp album. I ended up with punkrock Cori a few doors down the hall...which turned out to be a very bad decision for both of us.But her record collection was badass and she made her own chainmail.

Perhaps someday I'll remember that other polite girl's name and we'll chuckle at life's ironies and merge bank accounts and get a Golden Retriever puppy.
That's most of my recollections of the group,other than my little brother and I loved singing along to 'take the long way home' and therefore I will always love it and yes,naturally I bought a copy in the ensuing years. I do appreciate your appreciation of them ! Just ain't my cup of mud.

Been a huge fan since I first heard Crime of the Century in 1974. I first went back buying the first two albums, their debut album is still relevant and brilliant listening today.

Saw them on the last tour then did in the UK.
novaguy2u · 70-79, M
I absolutely agree. I saw the video of them "Live in Paris" and was blown away. Superb musicians individually, and a super group. Their music still rocks today!
helenS · 36-40, F
When I was a teenager, I had approximately 50 vinyl albums (family heirloom), and one of those albums was Supertramp's "Crime of the Century", which I liked very much, especially the first song on the album, "School", which has a powerful harmonica intro, and the title song. The Wurlitzer piano is great too. I don't know their other albums but some older friends told my that Crime is by far their best.
... oh, and welcome aboard the mothership! 🌷

Thanks for that...always did like them so I'll searchnup their music on YouTube and start lustening again.
I do listen to lots of the real talented older rock groups and just love the music
Dshhh · M
I agree. So my focus is often jazz, that album oriented rock of that era many of those musicians were astonishing a good Supertramp is wonderful
Spumoni · 46-50, M
I picked up a new, original press Breakfast In America album on vinyl last year. It us amazing. I could listen all day.
Vin53 · M
I bought BIA when it came out but ended up not listening to it too much. It was kind of a depressing album.
JSul3 · 70-79
That is so logical!

GJOFJ3 · 61-69, M
That a group from way back. I liked their sound. Roger Hodgson was very talented
Bumbles · 51-55, M
The big key/chord change in Take the Long Way Home is brilliant.
ClydeKoolray · 46-50, M
Agreed. “Breakfast In America” is a desert island album.
Barefooter25 · 46-50, M
The Logical Song is one of their best signature hits.

I saw them in concert. They were "dead on" on their set list. It was like listening to an album......they played all of Crime of the Century....unforgettable.
Famous Last Words is my favorite album of theirs :)
