I don't believe in god, but...people who are christians say they have a just god....

Sometimes you have to choose between kind and just....apparently that "god" felt being just was more important than showing kindness toward people. Kind of a bad god, huh?
"The God of the Old Testament is arguably the most unpleasant character in all fiction: jealous and proud of it; a petty, unjust, unforgiving control-freak; a vindictive, bloodthirsty ethnic cleanser; a misogynistic, homophobic, racist, infanticidal, genocidal, filicidal, pestilential, megalomaniacal, sadomasochistic, capriciously malevolent bully.”
― Richard Dawkins, The God Delusion

The next quote was used later for a book by Dan Barker God--The Most Unpleasant Character in All Fiction. In the book's forward, Dawkins adds:

"Is it, perhaps, unfair of Dan and me to pick and choose illustrations of the unpleasant characteristics of God? Couldn’t an apologist come up with a similar list of virtues, backed up by an even larger list of supporting verses? Couldn’t the apologist compile a counter to my damning litany? “The God of the Old Testament is ... magnanimous, generous, encouraging, forgiving, charitable, loving, friendly, good-humoured, supportive of women, of homosexuals, of children, freedom-loving, open-minded, broad-minded, non-violent.” Go on. Try and find those nice verses. Do your best. You think you’ll succeed? Want a bet?

We have all become acculturated to the idea that criticising religion is somehow not done, it’s bad taste, you just don’t do it. The result is that even mild criticism sounds a lot stronger than it really is. My Chapter 2, first sentence, is not mild. But it is nothing less than the truth, truth about both the letter and the spirit of the bible. The evidence? Read on."

To christians their God itself is the metric system therefore according to their logic God cannot be unjust because he said he is just.

Perfect circular reasoning accompanied by a moral framework that does way more harm than good.

you're normal and the dogmatic creepy bullies that want to shame you aren't helping you nor themselves. Nietzsche said "God is dead." most people think that this statement has to do with his evaluation of nature, life, and existence. That's not accurate. Nietzsche was referring to the fact of living in the 19th/20th century. Nobody goes to the priest or Bible to answer the big questions. Since you ( as in civilized human kind ) don't obviously believe it, but, tend to use it as an association... Nietzsche asked us to be honest about what we do believe, as in what do we value. He was asking good questions. Also, what could be the criteria for a belief? If you can posit that, the rest will come out. Clinging to ancient texts as if that is a virtue is your choice. I say it is not a virtue to be ignorant and promote ignorance.

@pdxlinux Great post. I have posed the same issue to a. lot of people....how can you decide what you believe? Christianity says you have to "believe." But that's not something you can control. I wish I did. nihilism is a recipe for deep depression.
I think it's because he gave us a choice. We all have one.
originnone · 61-69, M
@Spoiledbrat I've read dozens of your posts, and I know you to be pretty fair really. So, I'll pose a question.....If you were got, do you think you could find a way to provide people with choices without putting them in agony?
@originnone I can't comment for her, but she's very fair, points out logic some don't want to see. Usually written plainly, and direct, and I think it's this world asking personal questions without regard to feelings.... I find SpoiledBrat quite caring and sensitive, but maybe not in the way some associate now this way. There is an art in understanding, acceptance, expressing what you don't want to have too, and the nonsense I see embroiled here is just that, nonsense (and my view) testament how society needs to learn dialogue again.

If you don't believe in God how can you even have an opinion because HE doesn't exist ?
So if you have an opinion then you think he exists ?
What am i missing ?
originnone · 61-69, M
@pdockal he could prevent it, even if he didn't cause it.
pdockal · 56-60, M
@originnone

That's NOT how HE works

I'm not going to school you on how HE works

I'm done responding
Good luck
Good by
originnone · 61-69, M
@pdockal Yeah....that was the whole point. If he were so magnanimous, he should be able to relieve suffering.......and good by what?
Adstar · 56-60, M
You do not understand God... He is perfect.. He cannot compromise Justice.. He must be Just.. But through the Atonement of the LORD Jesus He has given a way where He can be forgiving and just.. Perfect in justice and perfect in Love at the same time...
originnone · 61-69, M
@Adstar Building the plants at Fukushima was not a mistake. A once in a thousand year event happened. Humankind could have pre....no WAIT....god could have prevented it.

As far as your last paragraph, I'm in total agreement, but I can't force myself to believe.
Adstar · 56-60, M
@originnone Of course building Fukushima was a human mistake.. Building 6 nuclear reactors on the pacific coast where it is subject to known earthquake and Tsunamis is just moronic and setting up the diesel driven coolant pumps right down near the ocean surface is criminally stupid.. And to hear you say it was not a mistake puts you into the moronic category too.. You have Zero credibility we me now man.. ""was not a mistake"" makes me laugh..
originnone · 61-69, M
@Adstar Then block me. It still wasn't a mistake.
maskedbandit · 61-69, M
No, because just leads to kindness.

@originnone Ah! So certain! So be it.
originnone · 61-69, M
@SW-User I'm not certain about anything except that a loving god would not have let this happen to me. Of that, I am certain.

@originnone I'm sorry for whatever situation you find yourself in, or those you love.

George MacDonald's sermon was concerned with final and "ultimate" things. That despite all evidence to the contrary, "all shall be well". It is a trust and faith that sustains me.

Again, I am a non-theist.

I have good reason to believe originnone committed suicide shortly after posting these things. I fear that his belief system, or lack thereof, led him to his demise. I am a Christian, and this post saddens me no end. I tried to reach out to him before his passing, but he had made up his mind. If anyone is feeling THIS sad or empty, I URGE you to seek help, vent to me, speak to someone..anyone.

@jshm2 fair comment aside from your being asinine in your first statement....but...."kind" and "just" are words and they have definitions. If you're going to believe in the christian god, you it's incumbent on you to resolve how he could be "loving" when he does the things he does....

A bad god would be a god who was so kind that they wouldn't be able to maintain justice, or a god that was so unkind that justice wasn't maintained. You're taking your corrupted view of kindness of a human being whom you'd ideally want to show as little participation in your life as possible to create no conflict with your thoughts and way of life, and placing that principle on an almighty God who created you and everyone before you. You're a fool.
originnone · 61-69, M
@MartinTheFirst What makes you believe justice is so important that it needs to be maintained at the cost of kindness?
MartinTheFirst · 26-30, M
@originnone what you just so elequently described is how political correctness extremists reason. I'd much rather risk being offensive and correct than neutral and wrong 👀 Justice goes above kindness, always.
