Yes. I own two versions of the Bible, and I use google constantly to refresh my memory on certain passages that I remember poorly.
We are told that the Old Testament is 100% the word of God, because God Himself inspired the MEN who wrote it, and the prophets who prophesied. That might be true, to some extent. However, it is also a written history.
I love the Psalms of David, and the relationship he had with God. I feel the same as he did, in many ways...full of love and praise.
The new testament was compiled at least 78 years after the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, and was assembled from the writings of the apostles. We say that the New Testament was the word of God, because In the year 325 AD the Emperor Constantine declared that Jesus Christ was God. (It was sometimes said that he did so for political purposes). Jesus Himself never claimed to be God. He called Himself the Son of Man. He called God His Father.
Men will argue about this until they are blue in the face...but I do love the teachings of Jesus Christ. very much. I use them to uplift my spirit, and in some instances I find that they disprove SOME modern day churches and their beliefs.
Let us not forget for a moment that the Catholic Church made a decision to remove the Apocrypha from the Bible in its entirety. Apparently it did not entirely fit into Catholic doctrine. Some of it did...but not all.
So the Bible has already been cherrypicked.
I do not appreciate Bible study wherein a sentence will be cherrypicked out of an entire chapter in order to prove a point that some MAN or WOMAN wants to make. You can NOT remove sentences from context.
Perhaps I am cynical, but there is a great deal in the New Testament that states Jesus did this, that and the other thing in order to follow a prophecy that was given about the King of the Jews. It seemed to me that he deliberately set out to prove Himself that king.
My cynical viewpoint in no way separates me from the love I feel for God or for the teachings of Jesus the Christ, and I sincerely believe that there IS a Holy Spirit, who comforts and uplifts us.
I may be the only atheist who owns more than one Bible. I like the stories from the old testament. I like God's no B.S. way of handling things. I respect those who do have faith even though I don't. I keep it on hand for reinforcement reference on touchy topics. Like I can say .. " It even says that in the Bible".
@Dainbramadge That is true. I see it everywhere, people hating other people or things that they are completely ignorant about. They look so silly when asked why they hate ---, and they have no answer. Exactly. People with normal morals have nothing to fear from it. It seems that currently, a lot of them just jump on the bandwagon of their favorite celebrities or friends, without having any real knowledge of why they are there.
@AbbeyRhode Yup. They do love a dog pile. I have seen so many videos of people doing that very thing that I don't even look any more. I scroll past as fast as I can if it even looks like one of those kind of videos. I think I am trying to make myself believe it isn't so common.LOL
@Dainbramadge And Hollyweird and the media are the wrong ones to follow. They normalize all of the worst and most disgusting behaviors, while demonizing what's normal and decent. Gullible people see their idols doing awful things, and others applauding them for it, and they think it's OK.
I have 3. Two brand new identical with a story. Vickie ordered 1 that was supposedly large print. When it didn't arrive after a month she contacted them and they sent another which arrived 3 days later. LARGE print? You need a microscope to read this book. 2 months later the other one showed up. Then I have a very old one from the 30s that belonged to my grandmother. It's half the size of the other 2 very thin pages yet perfectly legible. That's the first Bible I ever read the only one I have that's legible and it's also a precious keep sake. My grandmother on my father's side was the kindest and wisest person I ever knew in my life.
Yes, I do. I'm about half way through it. I'd recommend reading it. I have a few different versions. I swear every time I open it up and read it, I feel better.
@Tumbleweed thanks. I appreciate that and would love to hear your story some time. I have a testimony too. I should write about it and share it with others some day.
My actual Bible is in storage, but I find it easier to look up scripture online these days. I prefer "Bible Gateway," and the KJV, but it doesn't matter what translation one uses, one must always look up the Biblical Hebrew words, or the Konine Greek words to truly understand what is being said. The Bible, however, is neither the infallible word of God, nor the "inspired," word of God. It was written by men, who had an idea of what they wanted their God to be and do for them, just like every other ancient holy book. All ancient holy books, from all religions have some truth and have some wisdom that can be applied, and we should all apply good wisdom when it is heard or read.
I have a couple of dozen Bibles (Tanakh/ "Old Testament"). Some in Hebrew with commentaries and some in various translations in different languages. I am fascinated by the many different perspectives that these ancient texts can bring forth.
I own a few Bibles in different versions. My go-to Bible is always the King James version. I also have a few Bible commentaries. My favorite is the Believer's Bible commentary. I have them all on my computer now. I do have one Cambridge Bible in giant print, leather-bound. I only use my laptop now.
I had one and later threw it in the trash. All I can salvage from it is the golden rule and some of the commandments like don't kill or steal. The rest is made up and sickly.
