I was going to say mustard. That's what i recall about the intensity. The first time my dogs got sprayed, it was so bad, we had to stay with my inlaws for the night, left the dogs in the back yard and left the range hood on. It was like poison.

Edit:
All my dogs have been skunked. The last ones used to get skunked every year. What worked best to mitigate the odor was hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. I tried tomato juice, sauce and puree. It didn't do much for me.

@Jayciedubb I got some stuff at the feed store called Skouts Honor for deskunking. Has ionized water and something else that's natural. It worked really good, but I should have gotten two bottles. Also she kept shaking the water off her in the bathroom and the smell got on everything.

@morrgin wow! Thanks for the tip. Thats good to know
Jayciedubb · 56-60, M
@morrgin I'll keep that in mind. I've never heard of it before.

That sucks when they spread the smell cuz then when you don't smell it anymore, you don't know if it's really gone or did you get used to it.. 😁

Your dog’s probably feeling a bit rattled too. A quiet cuddle, a favorite treat, and some reassuring words can go a long way. Dogs don’t always learn from skunk encounters (they’re curious creatures!), but they do learn from comfort and care. 😀

@BobbySpeedy Some take it as a challenge.
My experience also includes the smell of burnt coffee. Maybe different skunks have different odors. In any case, they're all horrible.
@PhoenixPhail Makes sense that diet could influence the odor.
@UnderLockDown Yes. Also the particular species.

@PhoenixPhail Whatever type we have in Willamette Valley, Oregon.

How did you get rid of the smell? Around here, that shell is more commonly associated with smoking of marijuana than a skunk!

I sent you a message years ago in response to your following me. You never responded.

Giving the doggo a bath in tomato juice is the only way to get rid of the skunk smell.

Tomato juice. Soak her ....leave it on a while and then soap and water to wash it off. She will still stink for a while but at least you can be around her and not puke.

@anythingoes477 you may be too young to have seen the Seinfeld episode with his stinky car after carwash

That’s a very unique odor - and once you smell it, you know it instantly…
Vinegar wash works better than tomato sauce, and it smells better. Avoid getting it in the dog's eyes.
@UnderLockDown Old fashioned lye soap works too. Sulphur soap works quite well, even with cold water.
I've done this many times...😆
Livingwell · 61-69, M
Ugh!!! I feel bad for all of you..
WormMan · 56-60, M
Been there before, reminded of burning tires, family members were puking 🤮
Bklynbadboy12 · 36-40, M
How do you get that smell off your dog
Jayciedubb · 56-60, M
@Bklynbadboy12 hydrogen peroxide and baking soda works well, but nothing works totally. Just time
pdockal · 56-60, M
They don't learn
They will always smell no matter what you do to clean em when they get wet
morrgin · F
@pdockal Don't say that.
pdockal · 56-60, M
@morrgin

Ive had to deal with
2 cats (fill facial)
5 dogs (full facial)

not all @ the same time
over my lifetime
and till the day my pups/cats passed when they got wet enough you could smell skunk when you hugged them etc

one dog kept attacking the skunk till the skunk was empty & I distracted the pup long enough to let the skunk leave
one dog got it two different times
AngelUnforgiven · 51-55, F
Tomato juice rub it in then shampoo him
That just sounds like your husband blaming his gas on a skunk really🤷
A bath of tomato juice then dusted in baking soda should help.
