My dog got sprayed by a skunk

Just a couple of hours ago my husband asked me if I could smell a skunk. We were standing in the kitchen and the smell kept getting stronger. I asked if he'd just a moment before let the dog out. He said he'd grab a flashlight and find her.

He found her and brought her in. The smell increased. She got sprayed.

I've smelled skunk lots of times, but never like this. Its hard to find the words to describe it. It was like onions, garlic, mustard, and whatever else.

Hope my dog learned her lesson and wont do this again.

I was going to say mustard. That's what i recall about the intensity. The first time my dogs got sprayed, it was so bad, we had to stay with my inlaws for the night, left the dogs in the back yard and left the range hood on. It was like poison.

Edit:
All my dogs have been skunked. The last ones used to get skunked every year. What worked best to mitigate the odor was hydrogen peroxide and baking soda. I tried tomato juice, sauce and puree. It didn't do much for me.
@Jayciedubb Tomato sauce actually smells worse when you first apply it, nasty stuff.😖

@UnderLockDown one of the first two dogs I had that got skunked was a white dog with a black spot over her eye. The first method i tried to deodorize her was the tomato method. She ended up a stinky pink dog when I was done. .. lol there's that stuff called Nature's Miracle thats supposed to be some kind of enzyme or something. It's supposed to eliminate odor. I found hydrogen peroxide and baking soda worked best

Also, if you ever have to induce vomiting in your pet, give it a tablespoon or so of hydrogen peroxide. It will foam up in their stomach and they will throw it right back up at you. It works like a charm and its what the veterinarians use.
@Jayciedubb I had to give my cat peroxide once, it works fast.

@UnderLockDown instantaneously. I just thought of possibly a good way to find a good veterinarian. Call them and tell them your dog just ate a bunch of chocolate or rasins or something like that and see if they tell you about the hydrogen peroxide thing, or they make you come down and pay them to do it. 🤔

I had a hero of a veterinarian who told me about it over the phone when i thought my dog ate my son's medicine. He was awesome, not just because of that, but that may have been an indicator if i didnt already know that he was so awesome.

I didn't mean to run on, that thought just popped into my head as i was remembering where i learned that trick and how many veterinarians id gone through over the years before i met Dr Braun, who's since retired, leaving me at the mercy of the land of a million greedy hacks and quacks

@Jayciedubb Another trick that is the equivalent of what the vets do to treat your dog in the early stages of poisoning from antifreeze (a vet showed me the paper of what the treatment was that they were going to do, but since I didn't have the money, they told me what I could use that would work the same). Vodka or Everclear. Like 2-4 tbsp every hour mixed in with something they will eat or drink. The body produces enzymes to break down the alcohol, and in doing so, breaks down the antifreeze.

@Jayciedubb I got some stuff at the feed store called Skouts Honor for deskunking. Has ionized water and something else that's natural. It worked really good, but I should have gotten two bottles. Also she kept shaking the water off her in the bathroom and the smell got on everything.

@morrgin wow! Thanks for the tip. Thats good to know

@morrgin I'll keep that in mind. I've never heard of it before.

That sucks when they spread the smell cuz then when you don't smell it anymore, you don't know if it's really gone or did you get used to it.. 😁
