Why Is Being Gay Considered “Amoral”?

I could never grasp why being gay is considered an “amoral” act. Nor why people are homophobic in the first place. If God exists, and if God supposedly considers homosexuality a sin, then why is homosexuality so common not just in human beings but also in other animals? If it’s so allegedly unnatural, then why is it in our nature at all?

idk, repressed feelings maybe?
morvoren · 26-30, F
You can’t expect answers from religious people. If it’s not in their book it’s a sin.
Crazywaterspring · 56-60, M
[@981722,Morvoren] It could be in their book. They prefer interpretations. Reading is hard.
because babies
Doomflower · 36-40, F
[@1077581,ammelee] babies need care givers and food and if everyone has babies how will the caregivers supply food for the tribe's babies?

Think of it this way. Those who don't reproduce are available to help the tribe in other ways and increase the chances that the offspring that are born have a better chance in life. The species benefit.

Even in animals same sex couples can serve a function. They will sometimes take on parenting for abandoned or orphaned offspring for example.

So yes life needs babies but babies have lots of needs and if EVERYONE has a baby things would get hectic.
RedBaron · M
[@1077581,ammelee] Gay people can adopt children who need homes.
QuixoticSoul · 36-40, M
[@1050026,RedBaron] Gay people can even have babies. It's the 21st century, we have surrogacy, sperm banks, etc.
Adaydreambeliever · 56-60, FVIP
Totally agree.. if there's a god then he made some people gay..so how can we humans judge that and say it's wrong?

Like you say it's very common in animals too.. some animals are hermaphrodite, some can completely change sex... in nature all things are possible and probable.. so how come we humans think we know better?
jackieash · 22-25
[@7167,Adaydreambeliever] REligious peeps have a superiority complex. Because they believe in their sky fairy, they think they "have" to save everyone else.
LvChris · 41-45, M
Religions need parents to crank out new babies to indoctrinate to keep the religion going. Grown-ups are far less likely to join religions as adults because they think about the stories and dogmas more rationally. They need members to have influence, power, and money.
Tsondru · M
I believe it is love that makes all human activities good and sacred. That goes for sexuality.

I find it incomprehensible that two people of the same sex loving eachother can be immoral.
KidRandom · 18-21, M
I think you mean "immoral", but I agree the arguments against it are not great. Religions tend to define sexual activity outside of procreation as immoral, so homosexuality falls under that category. But most homophobic are not thinking in terms of procreative or non-procreative sex, they're thinking about their own personal discomfort with homosexuality.
[@1007030,InterestingLettuce] Nope Amoral is the right word to use.

If "god" dislikes unnatural things so much why does he want people to chop a piece of their penis off??

It's almost like this whole god thing was made up by idiots who didn't know where the sun goes at night.

Pooping indoors isn't natural either. Neither are clothes. As they say, "nature is what we are put on this earth to rise above" so really the "unnatural" angle is bull.

Anyway "amoral" is a good descriptor in a way. Being gay is not a moral issue therefore the "a" - meaning "without" is appropriate. It is an amoral subject.
Leggs · 46-50, F

Last time I pooped outdoors was when I was in the army and we were out in the field for training. I am NOT doing that again if I have any control over the matter.

It’s in our nature to judge others. You will be judged by society for being gay, skinny, fat, black, white, male ,female, tall, short etc. It’s just something people do. The whole reality show craziness revolves around this
hippyjoe1955 · 61-69, M
I think the word you are looking for is Immoral. The word Sin means to miss the target. To believe in sin means there must be a target at which to aim. What is the target we Christians aim for? The fullness of God in Christ within us. Have any of us attained it? Not on this side of the grave but that is the challenge. However when aiming for that goal we have to be careful that we do not substitute mankind's 'morals' for the Fullness in Christ. It is clearly spelled out that those who practice homosexual acts will not enter the Kingdom of God (Fullness of Christ within us) so to say that it is OK to engage in homosexual acts is delusional. Much the same as those who engage in slave trading or theft or murder etc. etc. etc.

RedBaron · M

Xipooh · 26-30, M
Because the biggest lie of Christianity was our disconnection from god/our higher selves. We all contain the potentiality for the idealised self. In believing in that seperation we confine ourselves to these literal notions and halt our own personal progress. We believe in none-sensical things like things happening in nature not being natural.

The most likely scenario is that people are greedy. After the Younger Dryas period 12,000 years ago humans were just about extinct. Most of the large fauna were less and farming was just bring discovered. People lived in clans. They needed to protect their land and hunting grounds. Marriage or at least pairing may have started. Biology suggests that earlier human mating rituals involved multiple partners which resulted in actual changes to human bodies. Sexually transmitted diseases may not have existed yet but exchanges of women between clans likely occurred but there likely was an uneasy peace. Keeping the strength of the clan up required children to be born. Likely it was decided that men needed to be fathers and to do otherwise weakened the clan/tribe. Now it's for religious reasons that groups insist on having lots of children so as to become the dominant religion in a region and take over the land for habitation.
Humanity has a way of imprinting it's own prejudices on its religions. It's a way to make those prejudices feel validated.
GuyWithOpinions · 26-30, M
Yeah Christianity really messed things up over the years... i met this guy thats gay but he doesnt know what i think about it. And he doesnt know that i know hes gay. We are friends at work and he doesnt know how to tell me and i watch him struggle with it. Sometimes its kind of funny to hear his word vomit. 😆. I'm one of the lucky few who had intelligent, empathetic parents who embraced my sexuality early on.

They often drove clear across the country to spend the holidays with my partner and I mom absolutely adored my partner much more than her straight son inlaw. I was never bullied either.

You're right about the animals. Natures way of controlling over population.

Not here to argue wether or not homosexuality is right or wrong.
But your questions could be posed of anything.
If god exists and considers (stealing/murder/lying/
Cheating..you fill in the blank) a sin then why is it so common?
Why are those things in our nature at all?
Those questions dont make the point that any of those things should be considered ok.

Being different in any way shape or form has since time immemorial been a topic of debate, everybody has an opinion some good some bad,it’s in our nature to give an impression of been superior,we as human being see ourselves in various guises and through ignorance assume far to much,we live in a world of diversity and splendour yet we can’t agree on the simplist of things,we start wars over religions, and greed..we cast aspersions on each other for an array of reasons,we inflict untold pain and predacious on anyone or anything that doesn’t agree with our views n opinions,Our individual countries gain international notoriety for the racial intolerance and abuse of its citizens and others,We employ others to protect n serve us yet they abuse our god given rights and murder those of ethic extraction because they wear a uniform,we elect officials to govern our lands yet they disgrace the office we elect them into,We may have dilutions of grandeur yet time n time again we prove how pathetic we are as a species,Yet we can’t live and let live,we are educated to the point of ignorance and until we learn to accept our faults the human race will always be bias n bigoted and in there lies humanities downfall

Naturalistic fallacy, to them, natural means anything in the bible. Their whole argument is that the first humans were Adam and Eve so gay humans later on in the picture are not fit to sit with the cool kids at the popular table 😎

Never mind the fact that there are two different versions of the creation story and that Adam was likely intersexed due to the Hebrew phrases used to describe Adam.

https://forward.com/scribe/356899/was-adam-a-hermaphrodite/

It's only the English translations that count for them and since they count, gay people are considered immoral because god only made adam and eve, everything else is just trying to be popular but can't be according to the Regina George's of the straight world.

Some gay folks go to church. You can tell if a church is accepting of gays though - only half the congregation is kneeling.

Deviance exists everywhere...there are always exceptions to the norm. I am entitled to share my opinion just as much as you all do. Call me all the words you want, it won't change my opinion. A man and a woman ..opposites and yet, fitting. Like a lock and key. There is no other way to open that door than a true fit of unity. I rest my case.

I'm guessing you are gay.

So, you've already tossed any concern for societal abnormality.
You don't believe in God, so why bother questioning religious concerns.
You've convinced yourself that being gay is normal.

So, I wonder, why are you asking the question?

Normal biology is the union of male and female that creates the next generation of every species. That's what most people expect and support. Most parents want grandchildren who will continue their families.

Normal biology is not caused by any religion although every successful religion, tribe, clan, culture, and nation has supported their biology that produces their next generation. Going gay, or failing to support normal biology is a dead end for the family, or religion, or culture. It's not about "who you love."

Then despite more population and more gay people, we're growing. We've obviously grown three times as a species since we were first here. You all homophobes have said this for centuries and for centuries humankind has only grown. You are simply wrong.

[@1130021,BobGrant45] It's cute when people fail to understand evolution but use it to justify hatred onto groups. I think that's called the naturalistic fallacy, everything we do is natural that's why using it to justify against any one thing is a gross oversimplification.

Sex has evolved to be social in many other animal species including ours, this following link explains that about monkeys since you care to bring up nature.

There's more than one factor that goes into our survival.

Our species has grown despite more gay people so you're just wrong.

I guess its only amoral (immoral?) to followers of certain outdated religions eg christianity/islam, hopefully one day these will be a thing of the past and we can just all get on with life!

In response to those who bring up family unions/procreation I would suggest having more than 2 children per couple is far more immoral than having no children given the over-population of our planet
Viper · 31-35, M
I disagree with some of the question.

Doesn't the bible suggest sinning is natural? And that's why humans' can't but help them but sin... which is why we need to repeat? And forgive ourself and each other for the sins, as we dessicate our life's to God to both improve ourselves and the world, though God's word?

Just because God doesn't like sin, does not mean sin doesn't happen all of the freaking time, including by those that claim to follow God's word (the best they can, even those some are fakes and not really even trying).

So something can be natural and common, and not be part of God's wishes according to the Bible.

===============

Also, got to remember, human wrote the bible too... and humans' have errors.

And I believe some have suggested (and I have no idea the truth of this), that throughout certain parts in times leaders and/or religion have been really pro-baby-making, as they want more people to build up their communities, and build up their Armies (especially after losing parts of their Armies or being attacked).

And because hetro-sexual acts create babies, while homo-sexual sexual act do not... and the more homo-sexual act there are, the less sexual frustration there is, and probably less hetro-sex there is'... so if one to maximum the baby making, limit the homo-sexual acts, to potentially maximum the hetro sexual acts and babies.

I bring this up, because I've heard rumors that some of Europe's war increased the hatred against homosexual act, as they wanted/needed to rebuild the Armys up.
Tastyfrzz · 56-60, M
[@800884,Viper] the fallicy in the population argument assumed that gay males will switch to a heterosexual lifestyle which I strongly doubt.
Viper · 31-35, M
[@391032,Tastyfrzz] I think that comes from the general idea that if you confess your sins, and give your life to God, and try really hard, you'll be saved and forgiven of all your sin.

Though, forgive, and removal of temptation or desire are very very different things.

I would not consider it homophobic not accepting gays or calling gays "immoral". What it really is and something screwed up people cannot accept is that male to male or female to female sex is perverted as people are not plumbed right for that. It is sick and liberals seem to now promote it in schools and in the media, more or less brainwashing young people into thinking it is cool or acceptable. I have had gay friends of both sexes and do not pick on them and accept them but I do not condone it nor sick minded liberals pushing it today.
ShayAdonia · 22-25, F
[@20049,acpguy] I don’t understand why people like you always jump straight to the insults. I am not a liberal actually. I’m asking you to specify why you think it’s sick? Because you didn’t really give a reason as to why. And I think you being rude to me is very hypocritical. What does it say about you as a person, that you would rather insult me then have a reasonable conversation?
acpguy · C
[@474305,ShayAdonia] I WOULD SAY YOU ARE A LIBERAL SNOWFLAKE WHETHER YOU THINK YOU ARE OR NOT. Below is what I stated. If you cannot, I can explain it to you but I cannot understand it for you.
