I Hate All Forms Of Racism

This add appeared in my jobs available care.com daily email.
I've got plenty of feelings about it, but I'd like to hear yours first.
Keepitsimple · 51-55, F
I’m not surprised at all. I just left a job and had a manager who was gay, screamed about his rights and yet threw all applicants of color out the door...people are jacked up anymore.
Splendida · 51-55, F
@Keepitsimple I worked almost 30 years as a preschool teacher. I definitely saw applicants come through the door who were otherwise qualified, but excluded for being a certain weight, male, too old, etc. However, management always found some other diplomatic reason for the decline. There is nothing more right about that per se, but I always thought it was done to protect the rights of the employer. If this were a corporate ad, couldn't it translate to a lawsuit?
chrisCA · M
That add would never be allowed where I live.
Keepitsimple · 51-55, F
@chrisCA There are those who forget about human rights and being decent people. The fact that that company even accepted such an ad is ridiculous!
Splendida · 51-55, F
@chrisCA I agree, I'm very suprised care.com would accept it with the wording as it is, and then Indeed carried it as well! 😳@Skipthissteptoday]

@chrisCA what is the worst that can happen if it has to appear where you are from
hlpflwthat · M
Yeah. Unusual as it may be, this is a discriminatory offer. I'm not certain if there are laws governing hiring for private babysitters. There certainly would be for a daycare center position, I'd think.

Idk if I'd be so quick to judge though. It could very well be that upon seeing that the child(or parent) is AA, past applicants have bailed or declined the position - perhaps in front of the child?
chrisCA · M
@hlpflwthat I imagine laws vary from place to place. A private sitter or nanny would be considered a more vulnerable position. Many governments realize this, and would take steps to prevent abuse.
Splendida · 51-55, F
@hlpflwthat that is really horrible to think about, but a definite possibility. Thank you for pointing it out. 😔
GeniUs · 56-60, M
Thought about this for a good 10 minutes now, my initial reaction was as per Flenflyys but that does set you off from early on in life identifying a difference in people. There may be a reason for this request but I cannot think of it so for now I'm calling it colour prejudice.
(Chances are they are a white couple with an adopted child who think they are doing the right thing. Maybe.)
NaturalBeautyQueen · 41-45, F
@GeniUs that’s another thought.
Splendida · 51-55, F
@GeniUs THAT is a very good point, it could well be a black child with no or few Black family or friends in the circle, with mindful parents, trying to do exactly what that I am secretly mentally accusing them of not doing...exposing a child to a wide variety of positive adult role models regardless of race. Thank you so much for that thought.
GJOFJ3 · 61-69, M
This is not racist to me. We should have preferences for our child care. Perfectly good ad. My opinion
GJOFJ3 · 61-69, M
@NaturalBeautyQueen very well stated.

@imLobo true. If they said that they only want people that are African american around their kids, because they don’t like another race, that would be a different story.
Bubbles · 36-40, F
If it was listed in an opposite way, "looking for a white person to hang out with our Caucasian child", I wonder how it would be received. I would consider both examples to be discriminatory. Whether the request comes from a place of racism can't really be determined from this ad.
chrisCA · M
@Bubbles If you can afford a nanny, then you should be able to afford a lawyer to look over an ad to ensure that it does not contravene local labour laws and the your human rights code.
Splendida · 51-55, F
@Bubbles it's a private sector ad, maybe the rules are different. It is not a job I was thinking of applying for, but because I was disqualified, I feel discriminated against! This hasn't happened to me very often, it's an interesting experience.
Splendida · 51-55, F
@chrisCA Excellent point!
NaturalBeautyQueen · 41-45, F
It’s a preference. No different than a black person preferring a black doctor or a teacher. And visa versa. It’s not racist at all. They probably would feel more comfortable from a cultural standpoint. Nothing wrong with that.
Splendida · 51-55, F
@NaturalBeautyQueen it seems like a more appropriate interview topic then the heading for a public ad. The implication could be no matter what I bring to the table, I can't qualify if I'm the wrong color. If that's the case, i'm thinking care.com should've help them reword the ad at least.
NaturalBeautyQueen · 41-45, F
@Splendida perhaps wording it better would’ve done some good. But at the end of the day, choose your battles. Either you can answer the ad or let it go and keep it moving. You could always ask them to elaborate.

[c=#BF0080]That's like saying "We're looking for a caucasian babysitter for our caucasian child." I do personally think it's a little racist. [/c]
Splendida · 51-55, F
Agreed. @SW-User
Flenflyys · 31-35, F
Like if they were looking for someone from the same culture i would understand but just any brown person would do? Yea its a little racist
popmol · 22-25, M
its the same racist thing if someone asked a white person.
popmol · 22-25, M
@Splendida me saying nigger in a non negative context then its bad but they can say whatever they want in a negative context and its fine, it gets me a little pissed off.
Splendida · 51-55, F
I wonder about that too. They are either derogatory terms, or they are not. Right?
...Or is it an ownership thing, like you can call your sister ugly, but I can't call your sister ugly?
🤔
popmol · 22-25, M
@Splendida well normally people would say what did you call my sister even if they called her ugly themselves. but i'm autistic and my world view is different i call black people nigros sometimes because its a short term of Negroid and thats the term for people who have a black skin. while caucasian is for white people from european decent. as far as i know so for me its not the same meaning.

and you can call my sister ugly if she is. i don't care.
Thereyouare · 56-60, M
It's very racist when I was born I was the youngest of four our neighbors a retired elderly colored couple Miss Mitchell took care of me I didn't care if she was black white green or yellow she fed me she looked at after me she changed my diaper she protected me and she love me .
I will always be grateful to her she is long gone I am sure may she rest in peace .
I wish we could all see people Through The Eyes of a baby not as black white green or yellow but for the compassion and love that they give.
Virgo79 · 61-69, M
Sounds to me that's exactly what they're looking for
Splendida · 51-55, F
@Virgo79 what if it said I needed to be white to qualify?
Virgo79 · 61-69, M
@Splendida then I guess you'd have to be, oh but that would be wrong, lol
bowman81 · M
An interview may determine a persons suitability for the job and if one is uncomfortable with someone taking care of their child it is ok to not hire them.....but to exclude them from consideration because of race is racist.
Splendida · 51-55, F
@bowman81 I qualify for this job in all other respects, but doesn't this tell me I shouldn't bother replying because of the color of my skin?
FreeSpirit1 · 51-55, F
That is bad.
This is the kind of thing which promotes racism. It creates a divide within individuals, which then is expressed as a divide between people and races. The person who wrote this add is a racist.
