Will Trump's continuing disregard for the truth destroy completely whatever remains of his credibility ?

The conservative-leaning Wall Street Journal has an editorial out today with serious criticisms of President Trump for his “seemingly endless stream of exaggerations, evidence-free accusations, implausible denials and other falsehoods.”

The crux of the editorial concerns the president’s wiretapping claim that has been refuted by a number of intelligence officials and the heads of the House and Senate Intel Committees. Yet, in the words of the Journal, Trump “clings to his assertion like a drunk to an empty gin bottle.”

The editorial board concluded: "Two months into his Presidency, Gallup has Mr. Trump’s approval rating at 39%. No doubt Mr. Trump considers that fake news, but if he doesn’t show more respect for the truth most Americans may conclude he’s a fake President."

I have read 3 books, and researched countless articles on Watergate and Nixon.

The Watergate scandal was not this far ahead at this point.
That is incredibly harsh for Trump.
The FBI basically said yesterday he is a liar.
People knew Nixon wasn't a people person, but they recognized his foreign policy chaps as genius.
He never understood the Vietnam War protesters, and his popularity with young people was horrible.

So is Trumps. But Nixon had started out with a much higher favorability rating, and with much more trust. People supported him on many levels and he was even re-elected DURING the scandal that would take him down.

Trump has no such luxury.
Few people trust him, even among the GOP, and especially among the educated.
That will play havoc for him in passing his agenda, because as his popularity plummets, few GOP legislators will want (or need) to be associated with his unpopular policies.

Not only does Trump lie daily, either through himself or through his team of pooper-scoopers he sends out to represent him and clean up his messes (which invariably they only make worse in AmateurVille) but his selling of his proposals are couched, dressed, and wrapped in lies as well. It won't take long for even the less educated, yet RIGHTFULLY angry American voter who wanted change in Washington to realize that where there is this much smoke, there is indeed Fire. They will see they have been had.

What should be Trump's honeymoon period has rapidly become a daily war on facts, and a defensive stance against all things rational. He accused the former President of a crime that Obama could have been impeached on, had it been true. It wasn't true. But the accusation is HUGE. It, in itself, could be an ingredient in any impeachment against himself.

It will get worse. It's his nature.Let's all hope he doesn't do something outrageous internationally (such as war) to divert, deflect, and corner the news cycle once again, in order to redirect the spotlight.

If anything, let's be grateful for his indirect influence in making journalists out of the parrots they were in the election, where they merely tripped over themselves in amusement and in giving him twice the publicity that Clinton, Sanders, and the host of ball-less wonders he faced during the primary.

Let the truth set us free.

@Misty71: it depends on anything they may find Trump guilty of, presuming he would be found guilty.

No one has said he is under investigation himself for colluding with Russia, and it's not likely he would be impeached for merely being his same stupid self.

Nixon was brought down primarily for his role in the cover-up.

Trump could be brought down, if indeed he is guilty, of actually committing treason should that bear out, and the many rumours prove true.

And that's important to distinguish.

His campaign is said to be under investigation. But how many creepy characters have operated within it, without appraising Trump of all they were up to.

He is innocent until proven guilty, but this looks worse for him each day, and he is only President two months.

Obama did not have one Administration scandal in eight years.

And so much has happened in two months that Obama seems like a lifetime ago.

Dang!
@CassandraFemale17: Trump doesn't compare to Obama, and really doesn't hold up to well to any modern presidency. The thing is, he can't be trusted to shut his mouth and stop being himself. Reagan, for example, let the Iran Contra Investigation run its course, instead of obstructing it. I don't think Trump has enough respect for the system, or anyone other than himself, really to let that happen.

The BS about Sessions was a perfect example. Saying that Sessions should recuse himself would have been the right move, but Trump couldn't resist saying otherwise, when I promise you, every lawyer he spoke to said Sessions had to step back and not supervise an investigation into himself.

This guy's really nuts and way off the board. I don't think anyone can really predict what he'll do, much less what mischief he'll create.

But, just for the record, your posts here have been the closest I've seen or read.
CassandraFemale17 · 26-30, F
@Misty71: thank you. The scary thing this illustrates is that any big-mouth with a large Twitter or social media following can be President.

If they can be bully enough to plot through the primaries as he has done, and bring along an additional 10,000,000 voters to add to the party voters, they can win.

Who will be next?
Kim Kardashian....if she bullies up?
Taylor Swift?
Bill O'Reilly?
Alex Jones.....god forbid?

Any bully noisy enough to eliminate the 'conventional, or normal' politicians
And 10,000,000 celebrity worshippers.

That is apparently all it takes now.

Truth be damned.
The truth is merely an inconvenience to be mocked.

Trump's relationship with credibility is interesting. He never had any until he ran for president, at which time his skill of spouting nonsensical rhetoric picked him up enough followers that he managed to fabricate credibility, and keep it by claiming that everything undermining him is fake.

Well-stated summary - lean & astute.
Even Murdoch media is beginning to crack. Watch for the next distraction. It has to be a big one.
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
The Fox anchor Shepard Smith has been particularly outspoken .... once Trump loses them he's toast.
@pezzza: That's just the news end of Fox. Trump voters don't trust anyone who ever worked for CNN. As long as Hannity and O'Reilly keep passing him hints, and trying to cover his back he's more like just warm and starting to mold on the counter, IMO.

Politicians have always been known for being deceptive, but until now, the actual truth did matter. Now we've reached post-truth politics. A significant number of people don't even want to know what the truth is anymore.
CassandraFemale17 · 26-30, F
Well said!!!!!!
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
When the truth becomes irrelevant we really are living in dangerous times. It's good to see that the FBI are also looking into how alt-right websites like Breitbart were disseminating fake news , also at the behest of the Russians , during critical moments during the campaign.
CassandraFemale17 · 26-30, F
@pezzza: so true! It's about time.
MetalGreymon · 36-40, M
And again, the trumpets don't show up to defend glorious leader when it comes to the fact that the man's word can be trusted about as far as you can throw his ponderous orange bulk.

Raise any other issue and they'll be all over it, usually by pointing out that clinton and obama are the worst people ever, but on this subject they can't even figure out a good deflection...

Shouldn't we say, instead of orange, maybe blond? Yellow? You have to admit the hair is a little better.

@CassandraFemale17: Oh! I forgot the part about accusing any and all opposition as being "liberal media." How did I forget that part?

Something is telling me his presidency isn't running as smooth as hoped for 😂
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@AliceSalomon: One ex-intelligence officer was actually quoted as saying that he 'would die in prison'. That would be even better.
CassandraFemale17 · 26-30, F
@pezzza: I read that too, at the time.

The only way I would say that is ok is if Trump committed treason in becoming President.

These are early days, so I wouldn't want to attach that to him.
And in spite of not being able to stand him, I do hope it isn't true.

But whoever had said that, may know more than I, but I sure hope they were just using hyperbole, and not basing it on evidence they knew of.

I don't want the USA to fail, so I cannot want that.
@KingKyrie: Y'think ? 😉

He IS a fake president!

Something that cracked me up yesterday. Ivanka has moved into the White House and, even though she has no official title, will be privy to all that goes on in government. It was suggested that she "humanizes" her father.

Hold up! Isn't it a prerequisite that the president of The United States of America is friggin' HUMAN??????
room101 · 51-55, M
@CassandraFemale17: i'm sorry but i have zero sympathy for anybody in the Trump clan
lorne13 · 61-69, M
@pezzza: today trump got his lawyers to threaten a teenage girl who made a site for coding practice, it was called Kittens Scratch Trump, and they made her change the name. Trump's so obsessed with anyone who doesn't like him. The girl changes the site name to Kittenfeed and trump
is still trying to have it shut down

@lorne13: And that's just about the measure of the man.

** blames british intelligence to distract everyone from incriminating investigation on Russia **
Think he'll connect the dots between British intelligence and the attack in London? It supports his narrative and a really controversial stupid attack would stir up an even bigger distraction. Just a hint of a conspiracy ought to work for him.
SW-User
@Misty71: i am sure Breibart is already posting that conspiracy theory as we speak lol
CassandraFemale17 · 26-30, F
@Misty71: good point. And will likely play out as you predict!
CassandraFemale17 · 26-30, F
Today Republican House Representative Devin Nunes visited the White House.

You remember him

He heads the Congressional Investigation

So, he goes to the White House to appraise Trump
Impartial investigation? More scandal? This Administration and its lackeys never take a day off. I can't keep up.

Looks like Nunes trip to the White House is backfiring all over the media already.
lorne13 · 61-69, M
this is truth
The Wall Street Journal caters to conservative/moderate Republicans. When I worked at my state's capital, there were stacks of this newspaper in doorways of every bank and financial institution. I doubt these Republicans are fans of Trump but they will side with him based on his billionaire/Goldman Sachs cabinet.

Trump's loyal base are NOT those people. They are anti-establishment (anti-Wall Street Journal) "nationalists" that read Brietbart, Drudge Report etc. They are a new breed of "Republican" that prides itself on being anti-government (among other things). I believe 4chan, Posse Comitatus and Duganites are a perfect example of this.
JustNik · 51-55, F
I have yet to see anything he says or does turn his supporters against him.
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
Agreed but with an approval rating of 37% there's obviously a great many who are already disillusioned.
JustNik · 51-55, F
@pezzza: If that's the case, they're going quiet rather than saying they feel they were mistaken. LOL
hlpflwthat · M
@JustNik: Probably time to start thinking how we bring them into the tent of sanity again? Quieting them isn't necessarily converting them.
Stop watching CNN
RodionRomanovitch · 56-60, M
@CassandraFemale17: That's precisely it , and investors' realisation that he is unlikely to be able to keep to his promises or move any of his agenda forward is the reason behind the massive drop today.
CassandraFemale17 · 26-30, F
@hlpflwthat: oh no worries.

I just hadn't heard of Edward Jones, and as I'm a news junkie, I had no idea if you were referring to a news item. I looked it up, and decided you are fake news.

Kidding.
CassandraFemale17 · 26-30, F
@pezzza: stock prices are often an emotional reaction. And emotional reactions are 'a la minute'.

They indicate expectation, as much as anything else.

They are not the 'cause'.
They are the 'effect'.

I'm against false allegations of any kind from anyone. I do support trump. And there are things I don't agree with with him. I had hoped he show some type of evidence of said claims. And bring his jobs to the US.
