Dog owners, what should I know before getting a puppy?

Adding a dog to my home has been on my mind for the past year or so. Wondering if there's any advice I should know beforehand. 馃

Edit: I should also mention my partner and I likely won't have kids so a dog would be my child with fur. 馃槄

never ever hit the dog, train it with positive kindness

@mrmoose think of little Daisy. surely that will help. *hugs*

@katielass I would take her with, she's a service dog, but I think all the activity might make her nervous

@mrmoose mine got found wandering too. Not sure if abandoned or lost. The way she would run she could have just wandered away fromba county or two over. Lol

@MethDozer mine too, the humane society found her, she had so many health issues, $400 worth of dental work alone

@mrmoose Awesome.
My Daisy was good and gentle dog but you could tell she never really socialized when a really young pup. She liked people.and other dogs but you could tell she never really had much pack drive. As I liked to call her, she was a wallflower. She would mostly just watch then.play a bit but bored quick and rather go do her own thing.
She could be a bossy birch though, like when other dogs would get wild with each other and start acting like fools she would come over and yell at them till they calmed down. Lol

Slices of carrot or green beans, make a goo reward treat while training them. They are responsive to training with food, too many treats isn't good for them. Carrots or green beans is a good alternative.
Expect to clean up lots of accidents, don't make a big deal out of it, just clean it up and take them outside.
Dont cheap out on food. Take it to the vet regularly for check ups. Play with it daily for at least an hour. Walk it a minimum of two times a day. Clean up it's shit and don't leave it for someone to step in.

Ummmm oh and love it like it loves you. 馃槂

Vet bills are expensive, so budget that in. And don't feed it low quality dog food, for many reasons. Dogs are the best, but it's a 10-15 year commitment.

Research your desired breeds traits BEFORE getting them.

Don't get a high energy hard to train breed if you're not going to meet those needs. Talk to people who have that breed.

Enroll in a puppy raising class. Learn how to understand dog language and communicate to them in a way they'll understand. Stay in obedience class for at least two full sessions/months. Don't just quit after puppy class. Socialization with other dogs is important for them too.

You have to be patient when house training him.

Its not like I can offer any advice. My two dogs were both on deaths door at the pound when I adopted them:

The Dog Catcher was rather pleased with the idea of anyone else adopting Basil the little black and white one. His missus wanted to take him home... 馃槄

@Thevy29 They are precious!

They chew everything and house training takes time.

Be patient and let them know love

It is just like having a baby, just a four legged furry one.

Love that dog. Make sure he/she knows your the alpha. Do not crate him/her, train instead. Make certain there is lots of excercise. Be aware of the breed. If he/she is a mixed breed, try and find out what. It makes a difference when it comes to the dogs needs.
Remember that you will take that dog through its life. And to him/her you are his/her life.

That you are going to own a puppy first not a dog. Yes after sometime puppy converted to dog lol
MethDozerM
Get one soon. Spring is the best time to get one because potty training in the winter can be a bitch.

Other than that be patient and calm but don't be a push over and spoil the dog either. You aren't doing the animal any favors coddling it all the time. You end up with a rambunctious dog who is always stresses out and often getting themselves into messes. Dogs without guidance end up a ball of nerves.
