Dog owners, what should I know before getting a puppy?

Adding a dog to my home has been on my mind for the past year or so. Wondering if there's any advice I should know beforehand. 🤔

Edit: I should also mention my partner and I likely won't have kids so a dog would be my child with fur. 😅

@mrmoose mine got found wandering too. Not sure if abandoned or lost. The way she would run she could have just wandered away fromba county or two over. Lol

@MethDozer mine too, the humane society found her, she had so many health issues, $400 worth of dental work alone

My Daisy was good and gentle dog but you could tell she never really socialized when a really young pup. She liked people.and other dogs but you could tell she never really had much pack drive. As I liked to call her, she was a wallflower. She would mostly just watch then.play a bit but bored quick and rather go do her own thing.
She could be a bossy birch though, like when other dogs would get wild with each other and start acting like fools she would come over and yell at them till they calmed down. Lol
