Do you think Saturday Night lost its flair?

1975-1980 were the best years. Gilda Radner, Bill Murray, Jane Curtain, Dan Aykroyd, Chevy Chase, Jim Belushi, Garret Morris, and Lurane Newman were the best.

Yes I do, lost it’s talent and humor. Seems too focused on politics, they used to be silly and more lighthearted in their comedy.
Jeffrey53 · 51-55, M
@cherokeepatti did you have a favorite skit? Mine was The Nerds, Roseanne Roseannadanna, Emily Litella, two wild crazy guys, and the weekend report
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@Jeffrey53 yeah I liked those too, and Eddie Murphy doing Buckwheat and the living in the van down by the river etc.
hunkalove · 61-69, M
I quit watching it about 20 years ago.
Jeffrey53 · 51-55, M
@hunkalove about the same
Funtoy4u · 61-69, M
I agree, they were the best. But the downfall of SNL is that they have wimped out. They either will not or are prohibited from making fun of the democrats. Sure they make a little joke now and then but no real stuff like they did with Jimmy Carter. They have become PC.

Yes it has. They weaponized it politically and lost its way. The original mission statement of comedy, has long been forgotten. It became an outright boor.
remember when late nite comedy used to be funny?. now its just bitter
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@TheOneyouwerewarnedabout that’s exactly right. And I wonder what they have to be so damn bitter about? I bet they’ve done things that they don’t want to be revealed and dealt with.
I watched often from 86-96, those casts were good as well. Martin Short, Dana Carvey, Phil Heartman, Dennis Miller, Kevin Nealon,Victoria Jackson, Norman Macdonald,
Chris Farley, Chris Rock, Adam Sandler, and a few more.

They wrapped their last season as the highest rated entertainment show in the 18-49 demo. So they're still relevant. I think the 'newness' of the early years created a different dynamic. As did the times. Ironically, you can't get away with stuff today that you could then. But no. I don't think it's lost it's flair at all.
I've watched through the duration and am always blown away that, other than a handful of years where they tweeked the format with longer, "high concept" sketches, that it's stayed so consistently strong. The advent of the internet sucked audiences from all television but they were really smart to take advantage of how five minute sketches can play online.
Ages ago. I kinda gave up after Eddie Murphy left. There was some good actors since then like Chris Farley and Phil Hartman. Now? I could care less. It sucks
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@stratosranger I used to look forward to watching it after the news on Saturday nights if I was at home and not out somewhere. Now why bother, it’s boring to me.
@cherokeepatti Yup. Lame.

JOHN Belushi. Jim is his brother who went on to make a career after John died. He was absolutely the best...as were all the others you mentioned.

They have crap writers now, who are afraid to be funny because of Marxist a-holes who will cancel them and have them fired and dox them.

I used to love John Belushi in the skit, Cheeseburger Cheeseburger Cheeseburger...🤣

That show hasn't been funny since the 90s
cycleman · 61-69, M
definitely after Mike Myers left
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@cycleman those two guys in the basement, Wayne & Garth….Wayne’s World was funny.

It is a shell of what it once was...
Barefooter25 · 46-50, M
I began watching SNL during the years of Dana Carvey, Phil Hartman, Victoria Jackson, Mike Myers. It had its ups and downs from the 90s to early 2000s.I think the series went downhill when they hired Tina Fey. I gave up watching the show 6 years ago. All one sided politics.
Coffeequilt · 51-55, F
Yes, not funny anymore
Oh no, I re-watched the first two seasons and it always put me to sleep. Perhaps cutting edge at the time, vastly overrated now. Like every season since, there are more often misses than hits, but you get the occasional gem.
Funtoy4u · 61-69, M
You will never see another skit like "It's Pat". making fun of a person named Pat who you cannot tell if is a man or a woman. Or hear someone say "Jane you ignorant slut" .
Synyster · 51-55, M
After, Dana Carvey, Mike Myers, Chris Farley, Phil Hartman, David Spade and a few others.
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
I never seen any if the episodes
Jeffrey53 · 51-55, M
@smileylovesgaming they were funny
It was not something we really got in england before, but I did hear it was legendary.

I suspect much like a British comedy things are far too politically correct now and so many jokes would no longer be acceptable.

Saying that, we have watched some of this past series and it has been refreshing as there are so few topical comedies around. I suppose as we don't have the good ones to compare it against they maybe do not seem so bad.
