Do you enjoy your job?

Or is it just a means to an end?
MissNoahLenFoxx · 31-35, F
I think a majority of ppl don’t like their jobs. At this time I’m considering that this may be a factor that can’t be overcome. We all need money to survive and we all need to work. Add the element of time and it shakes it all up. On top of all that it seems the jobs that most may find enjoyable don’t pay nearly enough as jobs that certainly are not fun….. I guess it comes down to smaller factors and which of those you consider as pros and cons. For example you may have one job that is m-f 9-5 every week. That’s a lot of weekly time to sacrifice however it could give you the opportunity to take you to exotic vacations and give you enough money to maintain your hobby of choice. On the other hand you could have a job that requires you to work on random days of the week. This job could be 4 days a week but in different orders each week. It would definitely keep things interesting. You technically would have more time off to do whatever you choose however considering that it isn’t steady work your paycheck could be lower than the typical m-f job, not to mention the unpredictability may make it hard to schedule appointments etc… People live in either scenario; one man’s trash is another man’s treasure. What matters is what works for you and what you want and need out of life? Also when asking yourself these things consider thinking about whether you’re an introvert or an extrovert? Is your money or your time more valuable?

@MissNoahLenFoxx Abdolutely. It’s all dependant on the individual. I like mine well enough, I’m good at what I do, have good colleagues and decent managers, but the physicality and hours are a lot. Saying that, I wouldn’t want to work less days and have staggered shifts, or night shifts. My social life pretty none existent but I’m more of an introvert anyway. So I guess all in all, it’s good for me.

If you’re not challenged by one concern, you’ll just be challenged by another. Very few ppl get lucky enough to have a good balance of life and work. Maybe even just bright enough to figure that balance out @DHggmu

I work from home, as a technical writer, and a programmer. Although I enjoy both of those activities, I do it because I need some money. I would stop writing user manuals (which nobody reads) if a golden meteorite landed in my garden.
MrsMONAKanful · 36-40, F
@helenS why would you dislike something that you say you enjoy
DHggmu · 31-35, M
@helenS Yeah exactly, I figure it’s less enjoyable doing it because you have to, rather than doing it because you like to do it. But sounds like you have a good job that fits you.
helenS · 36-40, F
@MrsMONAKanful I write financial management software for a living, and I think I'd probably focus on other programming projects, as a millionaire.

I work to pay the bills but I also make the shift fun. I keep people laughing even if it means getting in just a tad bit of mischief on occasion.

I know I'll never make much money, even with a college degree, but I'm sure I'd like working more if I knew it wasn't just for the bare minimum.
DHggmu · 31-35, M
@AlchemyFox Similar to me, I like the job well enough, I don’t get the best pay, the people I work with are great and we know our jobs so it’s a good place. We still have “fun” too, the work still gets done. Can’t ask for too much more.
Oooh good one.

I personally Love my job. I enjoy what I do and feel am treated very well.

However!

I don't want to work. Just like everyone else I'd rather do what I want to do but them bills gotta get paid 😭
DHggmu · 31-35, M
@Teggy Yeah I’m similar, I enjoy it but it still drains the life out of me, also I never seem to have much more than is needed to pay the bills..
SunshineGirl · 36-40, F
I love elements of the tasks I perform. But would I subject myself to frequently illogical routines, excessive monitoring, and control by others for anything other than financial necessity? Of course not.
This career is far lighter than my previous one. So, yes. I work alone. I bring my hobbies with me. Pay is okay. Could be better. Doing this until I can retire.
DHggmu · 31-35, M
@PoetryNEmotion Sounds nice enough. Do you mind me asking what it is you do?
Fluffybull · F
I used to. Things changed after lockdown though 😥
DHggmu · 31-35, M
@Fluffybull I’ve always wanted to work with animals, may I ask what you do? And I can relate to preferring animals over people :)
Fluffybull · F
@DHggmu I'm a self-employed dog-walker/pet-sitter. I used to just go to clients' homes when they were out at work, take out the dog/attend to other pets then go home at the end of my day. Now most clients are working from home but still want me to work for them but they increasingly see me as someone to tell their so-called problems, ask advice on non-animal related subjects, bicker with their partner (who is also working from home) in front of me, etc. As an introvert, it's quite draining 🙄
DHggmu · 31-35, M
@Fluffybull Ahh that sounds like a nice job regardless. I’ve considered a dog sitter as my pup has separation anxiety, poor thing. But she’s doing better lately.
JustEd · 41-45, M
I enjoy it. Especially when it comes to doing the work. Get bogged down with some of the other responsibilities but overall it’s good.

@nedkelly I try to stay away from any "woke" person whenever possible... 😏
nedkelly · 61-69, M
@helenS We has university students doing placements at our work, they reported me to the manager for advising a visitor to go to the window and see the ladies, they were offended I used the work lady, another time they were upset two of us called the manager boss, they indicated that calling the manager boss was disrespectful
helenS · 36-40, F
@nedkelly Not sure if it's sad or just ridiculous...
