Ever had a coworker pass away?

I worked for 20 years at a major TV network, and in that time, I knew about a dozen people who passed, including a former boss, and one customer service person who actually died at her desk during the workday.

Earlier this week, a former co-worker, who had been there for 40 years and won several Emmys, died just short of his 67th birthday in May, when he would have retired. That was really sad.
They gave him a nice shout-out on a sports show last week.

It's so difficult to lose someone you worked with. Has anyone else experienced this?

I once had a roofing sub contractor that roofed many of the homes i built. His timing and quality declined and i was forced to fire him. That very evening, he went home and killed his wife, his child and himself.
That just about wrecked me.

@GeniUs he was not yet to middle age. Obviously he had issues.
LunarOrbit · 61-69, M
@Carla We’ll never know what pushed them over the edge. Unfortunately its what they wanted. :/

@Carla one of the nurses who worked in my program was a brittle diabetic, and depressed. We tried so hard to accommodate her needs, but she committed suicide. It was so horrible.

Sorry to hear. Actually two. This girl I worked with for a while died in a car accident. She was 33 at the time. Her death has shaken me. The other guy was in his 60s. I worked with him shortly. Nice man. He was admitted to the hospital with diabetes complications and passed away about a month later.

I had that happen. Was working at a job site for a few years. Had a staffer who was started working at the site about the same time I did. Then a few years later. Was going on a trip and the staffer wanted to know about how my trip went. When I got back. But when I got back from the trip. Was informed she had passed. Staffer was younger than me. Cried for a few days.
Yes. He was an odd guy, but he was very nice. He had some issues, and sometimes people at work would try to tease him. I once threatened a room full of people in his defense. He had a habit of grunting when he ate and others thought it was funny. I think it was the result of growing up institutionalized, with no one actually taking time to socialize and show a little love, and he was extremely autistic. He was quite a bit older, I guess it shouldn't have been a surprise when he passed away.

We had someone dying fast [we thought several days] so a van load of us all went to go say our last goodbyes. She died 10 mins before we got there, and there she was all out on the couch and we milled around with her family for a little. I was so traumatized and they never brought anyone in to talk about it. Mandated training the next day for a system we never used.

Tommy at work. Young and strong willed, passed away from Covid. I was dumbfounded. 😳😔💔😥😇🙏
Carissimi · F
This “mild” covid variant is not so mild when I’m seeing as many people die in 3-months (more than half vaccinated) than died in the first two-years.

I’m sorry about your young coworker. @Montanaman
Montanaman · M
@Carissimi Yes. Exactly. Thank you 😊 🤗
Poppies · 61-69, F
Yes, I worked closely with one woman in an office. She became ill and couldn't come in and I had to do the work for both of us, and then she died. Another person was assigned to help me. But, the one who died hadn't actually finished teaching me everything about the account 🙃. I didn't even know how much I didn't know! That was quite a ride.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
Yes, a supervisor died of Parkinsons disease. Was sad thing just watching. Eventually he was forced to retire, yet he had already lost everything in a divorce.

Only lasted a year after he retired.
SW-User
@DeWayfarer That's sad. I didn't know Parkinson's could kill. I thought it only affects motion & speech.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@SW-User it effects your nervous system. Just about everything it effects. Including your heart and other organs.
acupaday · 46-50, F
My gosh. Both accounts are tragic in my eyes. I consider 66 young and considering he was right there at retiring. Man. My heart goes out to you and everyone he touched.

Have experienced several passings of coworkers. Had a group of beloved and bubbly coworkers get into a car wreck over a weekend 20 something years ago. They were all teenagers. Bright futures ahead. It shook us all to our cores and took a while to heal from. And had the manager of our store, who was in his 20’s and beat cancer twice, drown while out boating. Totally devastating to everyone who knew him. Was such a great guy. I’ll think of each of them at random moments and wonder what might have been if things had gone another way.
workinghard · 51-55, M
I have known a few co-workers who sadly passed away shortly after retiring, but I have had the sad occurrence of one man dying after a very short illness, but at home not at work.
Montanaman · M
@workinghard I know i don't want to be one of those men that pass away shortly after retiring. 😔🤗🤗
Yes, last fall. We hung out after work sometimes. Was about to call him about hanging out when I got the email. He was early 50's, and had a history of heart issues. Didn't exactly keep himself in shape and drank like a fish.

@DeluxedEdition Thank you.

Yes and thats all i wanna say about it.
AmberDuponte · 26-30, F
Oh, that's a nice touch. I'd imagine it's horrible hearing that. Drops staff moral for a while, but nice to say something on their passing.

No, thankfully, I've not been in that situation. I hope not to be, but as a young(ish) person, I guess that time will come.

Hugs to all.....

I had a boss who ended up driving his motorcycle into oncoming traffic on purpose. He was in so much debt and I guess just didn't feel like dealing with it anymore. 😕
LunarOrbit · 61-69, M
Sorry for your loss.

Some of us know our coworkers better than most of our friends and family.
I’ve lost lost many over the years.
Crazywaterspring · 61-69, M
I lose a coworker about once a year. People stay until retirement. Some keep going long after they start collecting Social Security.
SW-User
Yes. I often think we see a side of coworkers that their family don’t..it’s quite a unique connection when it’s good
meggie · F
Yes on boxing day a colleague committed suicide
newgirl · 56-60, F
Yes. One lady died after having gastric bypass surgery. One lady died from cancer. Very sad.
SW-User
Yes, several. The most shocking was a guy who died in the bath, in a hotel in Munich, when a picture fell off the wall and severed his femoral artery.
DeluxedEdition · 26-30, F
Yes a few actually
BabyLonia · F
Yes three times. All three were young guys. One had cancer. The other two died on holiday in mexico within 2 years of each other, one from a heart condition and the other in a hit and run.
Was so sad.
I’ve seen a few things in thirty-four years. A colleague who came in after she’d killed her husband (who’d been beating her for years). One of the clerks was shot by her ex outside work. And I worked near 101 California when there was a mass shooting there in 1993.
a few . heart attacks
Yes. In the 80s I lost a lot of colleagues and personal friends to AIDS. I spent a lot of times at bedsides and at funerals during that decade.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
@bijouxbroussard I'm sorry to hear that.
@uncalled4 When I first left home, I was invited to live in a commune with 11 other people, including the friend who owned the property and his partner. I only stayed for about six months before I got my own place. But of the twelve of us, only me and one other person was alive by 1995. The other woman there died in a car crash, Marty had a heart attack. But everyone else succumbed to AIDS-related illnesses.
Carla · 61-69, F
@bijouxbroussard those were tragic years. I too, lost too many to aids.
And yet they keep putting retirement age up 🙄
GeniUs · 56-60, M
@OogieBoogie I'm guessing you are British and yes I totally disagree with the government (in more precise terms), withholding the state pension until a later age. I have still retired early but have all my working life looked for the opportunity to do so, some decisions have gone my way and some not but I was still able to retire around about the age of 50.
uncalled4 · 56-60, M
Thank you to everyone for sharing.
