What would you do

Started as a barback for my current employer 3 years ago. Learned how to bartend and has been my occupation for 34 months. Also a full time college student. Fall semester commences in 7 days. Was offered a management position last night. More hours...more money...less fun pourin' drinks ..seriously less free time. Feel like I've been offered the keys to a city. Just not sure I can maintain both. 🤷‍♀️

Management is obviously impressed by your talents. If they are smart, which I’m sure they are, you have been under serious observation from the top before their proposition. It all depends on how much the social interaction drives your performance. If you absolutely need the social stimulation to drive you that stay where you are. If you can wean yourself from that dependency then I would take that next step up the ladder especially if you have your undergrad under your belt and ready to take on more challenges.

@Pfuzylogic Not knockin'em...but pushing pencils has never been my career dream. Far removed from my aspirations, tending bar is fun af lol. Fits well with my scholastic schedule. But in the interim I eat Ramen quite often an pay my rent late.

@Punxi I think you know what you mean about pushing pencils, of course writing a dissertation will require that.
Use your imagination and see if there is a way that you could make a promotion exciting and if a new position doesn’t contain elements of motivation then maybe create a job description that would allow you to enjoy what you do.

Does the new position relate to your college goals and degree? That could have some bearing on the decision. How much longer full time college before you get your degree? Once you get that degree is it worth way more in career power than the promotion?? Weigh these questions and see where it focuses you.

You’re young and although the combined workload is big, you can handle it, keeping in mind it’s finite. Cash flow yes!!!! Also as a manager you may see more flexibility in the way the employer treats you.@Punxi
Punxi · 26-30, F
@BackyardShaman That finite part...Thank you for that.
BackyardShaman · 61-69, M
Absolutely!! I’ve been in a similar position myself@Punxi

Do you want the extra work? Do you need that extra $$?

If you enjoy your current position, it may not be worth changing it
Punxi · 26-30, F
@WaryWitchWandering Classes + work 🤷‍♀️
WaryWitchWandering · 36-40, F
@Punxi and homework plus studying too I’m sure

I dunno, sounds exhausting… some people love being busy like that though. It really depends on how you’re looking at it and your mindset going into it. You know better than anyone if it’s something you could handle without becoming overwhelmed or drained
Punxi · 26-30, F
@WaryWitchWandering A clincher. My student aid depends on my GPA. I'm no wiz kid. Gotta study. But...gotta live. A beast of a decision.

Keep your flexibility during college - stick to slinging the drinks when you need to.

Unless this management gig is tied to your college degree.
Punxi · 26-30, F
@Keeper Hmmm..🤔. Outside of experiencing human behavior, in no way attached. Kinda gotta fess up to thinking bout more money....that carrot.

I needed to hear that, Keep.
Fullmetal · 46-50, M
School first and foremost!! You can fall back on bar tending in the future if need be, or your want/need a second job! Applied knowledge is power!
Punxi · 26-30, F
@Fullmetal 🤔
MellyMel22 · F
I guess it all comes down to is if it’s worth the increase of everything while going to school(in your opinion).
Punxi · 26-30, F
@MellyMel22 Damn sure a tough one. The excitement of the offer kinda matches the fear of failure due to burnout. 🤷‍♀️
What do you seek, is what you might want to ask yourself. Not that either direction is wrong.
Punxi · 26-30, F
@checkoutanytime 🤔...TY.
BarbossasHusband · 36-40, M
I would focus on studies. Going back later can be very hard.
Punxi · 26-30, F
@BarbossasHusband Thank you...for that fact. I keep pushin it aside.
BarbossasHusband · 36-40, M
@Punxi you'll never regret finishing school.
Whyme · 46-50, M
Ive allways chased the dollar and now regret it take what you will from that
Punxi · 26-30, F
@Whyme Much said right there. TY 🙂
TexChik · F
School comes first! Can you pull it off ?
Punxi · 26-30, F
@TexChik I could in light of not allowing a situation to beat me. But.... not certain what will be left over in my attempt.
TexChik · F
@Punxi yep that would be a tough semester.
RebelFox · 36-40, F
