If i were to invest in a gaming system what would folk recommend ?

Waaay back in the day i had a Sega Megadrive that was pretty decent but my children hogged it and eventually wore it out.

I've bought them other consoles since (Nintendo/Sega Saturn....something else that had a unit you had to connect to it via the cartridge slot 🤷🏼/X-Box/Playstations (numerous versions) but never got anything for myself 🙃

I had a thing at one time for the 'Strike' games (Desert Strike/Jungle Strike/Urban Strike etc) and also the 3D Puzzle stuff Kulaworld etc. and wonder at how all that might have been updated and enhanced since my playing days.

So if i were looking at buying an up to date system, what would folk recommend ?
If you decide to build a PC, these folks have pretty good advice.

I've been helping my boys (& their friends) put together gaming PCs for several years; haven't done any recently though.

Monitor: 1440p (2560 x 1440), probably 144hz. That's kind of the sweet spot nowadays and doesn't demand too much of a modern graphics card. Your choice of monitor will determine your graphics card and CPU, so that'll decide most of the system.

The tomshardware.com $800 system looks pretty solid; that price does NOT include the monitor. BTW, you can run your 1440p monitor at 1080p for faster frame rates. Another way to get faster frame rates is to lower the graphics quality; say from 'ultra' to 'high.' Their $1000 system is, of course, better at 1440p if you demand 'ultra' settings.

Most graphics cards these days do ray-tracing for even better reflections and shadows. My kids say for the games they play ray-tracing doesn't matter; the default lighting is so good and ray-tracing slows down your frame rate a great deal. Still there may be a game you love that plays better with ray-tracing.

I suppose it depends on the games you want to play. This is what I do:

Get a new console I can play the newest games on. A mid level PC that only needs to run older games I enjoy playing

@caPnAhab ....and then there's all the PC stuff, i'd forgotten that.

@Picklebobble2 the nice thing about a PC is you can modify them to fit your games or your budget.

Downside, it involves a lot of technical know-how
@caPnAhab motherboards have become incompatible with newer generation of processor so when you upgrade a processor you end up upgrading ram, motherboard and processor. It’s most of the cost of pc.

Better to buy a console. It lasts longer

Would really depend on what you want to play. Some games are only exclusive to certain platforms

For the games I play, I've just stuck with a high end laptop. I can play high level games on their highest settings with no issues plus do whatever else I need to do bc it's a PC and I'm not tied to a desk.

I would recommend a laptop or PC. If youre referring only to consoles then i would need to know if you are wanting to play older or newer games.

@astrosandorbits I have a Laptop. It's fine it does everything i need it to do. I don't choke it up with music downloads or movie stuff; i'm not streaming anything....See if we were in the age of PS2/3/ Xbox 1st/2nd generation, i'd probably just adapt my laptop.....but then again, if i got an up to date console i could probably do all the gaming stuff and the music stuff....

A lot of the newer systems all have a lot of the classic games in compilations or in some cases remasters
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@GeorgeTBH I've noticed that. I've been watching a few 'walkthroughs' on youtube just lately.

@Picklebobble2 nice and they are always cheap
I’d never buy a gaming pc, buy a console. It’s a better investment
@astrosandorbits one product is better value for money
astrosandorbits · 26-30, M
@mysteryespresso you can play almost any game on a pc through emulation. Not to mention the massive library that exists for it. I'm not sure how a console is better value for the money considering pc is also extremely customizable. This is coming from a huge Playstation and Nintendo fan. I just don't see where they beat PC.
@astrosandorbits I have given up on pc. According to me it’s better value for money, no need to worry about anything

@Picklebobble2 lately They've been buying up companies to produce exclusive games for them. Take Bethesda for example, elder scrolls 6 will only be for xbox & pc. They also bougjy activision blizzaerd as well. I ain't no genius but they make great triple AAA games
Picklebobble2 · 56-60, M
@Disposal Do you happen to know if the Tony Hawk Skater games are available for an x-box ?
Bit lazy i could research that myself lol

OK they do 🤣 i just checked

@Picklebobble2 not sure. Not particularly my type of games but i believe there are some
