Stranger Danger

If you were driving down a country highway, no traffic nor people , no cell phone and you came across a severely injured person in the road, what would you do? Would you go to him/her? or drive off to make a call? Just curious.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
Having grown up in the New York City area, I would be wary of this being a set-up. My instinct would get me wondering whether there were accomplices hiding behind the rocks or bushes, ready to jump me if I get out of my car to help.

Also, I have no expertise in aiding a severely injured person. Stopping would just be a feel-good experience for me, but it might be the worst thing I could do for the victim (if the person really were what they seemed to be.)

I would drive on to where I could make a phone call. Perhaps I would hit the brakes, roll down the window half way, and call out that I was going to call for help, before driving on.

@DrWatson Well said.
@DrWatson yeah i would be as suspicious as hell. If I did stop (seem to think I would), my head would be on a swivel looking around for "the ambush" as much as any help i might provide. Always ready for a pre-planned and already thought of exit strategy.

Total honesty, I do not think I could say for sure what I would do until in the situation.

I think we've all heard horror stories where motorists stop and they themselves become victims of robbery or worse.
I think i'd be inclined to hit the tripometer to get an accurate mileage of where they were and drive to the nearest safe place and report it to police

in this day and age, I'm sorry to say, I'd drive to where I could get the nearest phone and make a call for them.

I don't stop, unlock my doors or roll down my windows for anything usually, even with a phone. My tendency would be to drive to the nearest well lighted public parking spot -- and around here, that's usually only 15 or 20 minutes from any "country road" -- and call the police.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
Those that I picked up are far more afraid of me!

Seriously. I had to let one use my cellphone she was that afraid. She called 911! 🤣

I'm super harmless, really! I just look like a freak.

As a former EMT, always be certain the scene is safe before stopping to assess the victim and potentially rendering aid. If any doubt, like most everyone said, find a phone and call it in. It doesn't help the injured person if you become a victim too.

If you can help, priorities are airway first, then breathing, then circulation. If you need to fix any of these, do so if possible, then go on and summon help. At that point you'll have done all you can for them.

I would, without giving it a second thought, visually check the surrounding area, stop, assess the injuries, and give what immediate first aid I could.

Then, if it appeared that moving the person would not further injure them, I'd put them in my vehicle and drive to the first town I could find.

If I felt moving the person was out of the question, I'd drive to the nearest home or town, gas station, etc., and place a call for emergency response. Before departing the scene, I'd reset my trip mileage to zero and determine the direction I would be traveling in so I could give first responders an accurate location of where the injured person could be found.

@Ontheroad You are in the minority, my friend. What does that say about humanity, I wonder? I would never get out of my car (though, of course would call 911).
Ontheroad · M
@Mikla I would add that if I were a lone female, there is no way I'd stop.

The unknown frightens us (we humans), and unless we've been trained and had experience in confronting the unknown, fear is going to rule our reactions. It's really that simple... our survival instinct rules.

Training and experience temper the fear and allows one to overcome the natural survival instinct. You never become unafraid/unfearful, but you learn to use fear as a tool in how you react to the unknown, as opposed to letting your survival instinct cause you to flee. You do what needs to be done.

@Ontheroad Thank you so much for putting it all in perspective.

I would not get out of my car

@itsok what's if it was me and I got injured on my way to dropping off some chocolate goodies to your house...?
itsok · 31-35, F
@SW-User why’ve you left your wives at home?
SW-User
@itsok I'm coming to propose to you...

My wife had a similar situation on her way to work early one morning. She came across a woman lying in the middle of the road, who turned out to be very drunk. My wife gave her a lift home. I didn't think anything of it when she told me, but my daughter was shocked that she'd stopped. Maybe it's an age thing.
As a woman traveling alone, I would be much more likely to call 911 for the person than to stop and leave the protection of the car.

In the past, I probably would have stopped to see if I could give aid, or get them in my vehicle to drive them to the ER, but sadly, the world has changed, and there are too many lunatics and violent criminals for me to do this now. I’d drive to a place with a phone and call for help.
DavidT8899 · 22-25, M
I would definitely stop, and if I thought the situation was legitimate Id go to the nearest convenience store and call the police. While it may be a sad reflection on today's society,I agree that it wouldn't be safe to actually get out of my car.
Continue driving, but to make a call, marking the position on a GPS or paper map. Returning to the nearest junction, to watch from a safe distance that help did actually arrive.
Thevy29 · 41-45, M
I have my senior First Aid certificate and obligated to stop and render aide if I can. Call the ambulance for sure.
Dino11 · M
Call 911, then Stop and help, with my Glock 17
With me.
meggie · F
I would keep driving and ring an ambulance.
Nitedoc · 51-55, M
I'd stop and try to help them. I'd also pay very close attention with eyes and ears for anyone else around me. (I always carry a good pistol on me). I do not suggest everyone do this. The question was what would I do.
SW-User
I've done this before but I live in the city. And this individual is one I've noticed before around the neighborhood. I wouldn't do it otherwise.
Rolexeo · 26-30, M
I'd give them a motivational speech, tell them it's all in their head, YOU can do anything if you just set your mind to it!
deadgerbil · 26-30
Idk... I mean I've given a random dude at night a ride to a bus stop, so I'd probably help
I would get out, there's a risk, but too high a risk for a woman.. She should go into town ....
cyberdude28 · 31-35, M
Drive off of course, it could be a set up
I would keep driving.
Stop, go to them , kick them in the nuts and then go back to my car to resume my journey (i think injuries are a conspiracy)
YoungPoet345 · 26-30, F
Call for help. Being one of the lone women. And not get out of my car. Call 911 that is.
Nitedoc · 51-55, M
@YoungPoet345 Smart lady!
ronisme1 · 61-69, M
i would call while making sure the person is ok
iamonfire696 · 41-45, F
I wouldn’t get out of my car when I stopped.
Lilnonames · F

Mikla · 61-69, F

Lilnonames · F
