Anyone get in a multicar crash?

I was hit last night, smashed , by a jeep behind me, but someone slammed into HIM first. I never got to take a pic of jeep that hit me, but got his name and the cops were doing all the work with the report details. They handed me a card with the Accident report number. My car was towed and I've never been through any of this. I'm assuming I call my insurance tomorrow to report it, but after that, I'm not sure if it all. 😩 My back bumper and trunk are really smashed so not sure if it'll be replaced or what. Any ideas ?
I am ok thank goodness but had whiplash neck pain this morning.

Yes. Call insurance company at earliest convenience and give them the report number

Document everything. From all details you can remember of the accident, the police questions. Everything. Write down dates times etc when things happened.
Document all correspondence with insurance companies.
Go to hospital and get checked. If you dont, you will forfeit any compensation for your injuries. Injuries can develop over time. So dont let it go as nothing. Could be worth big bucks to you.
Here in canada, your insurance would cover your damages and then fight the other vehicles insurance companies for reimbursement.
Your insurance company will recommend where to bring it to get fixed. Get a rental and submit expenses to your insurance company.

You should be fine

@LunarOrbit Ty, appreciate those tips🍀

I am glad you are OK.

I hope your neck feels better.

Yeah, call your insurance to file a claim. Or maybe you can do it all online. Last time that is what I did. I still had to call, though, to ask a question about one of the items on the form.

Then they sent me to a collision center who they contract with. They were very professional and efficient with tablets in hand typing in stuff. My insurance has rental coverage, so I got a car. I think it was with Enterprise: they bring you the car!

But that was all when I had been at fault (I backed into a guard rail!).

Many years ago I got hit. If I recall, I contacted mine and his insurance, and his insurance took over and handled the repair. They were so good I almost thought of switching providers!

I have never totaled a car, so I do not know what it is like to get a new one or what would be covered, and by how much.

I hope it all goes smoothly.

@JoyfulSilence Oh wow, glad things worked out. I hope that is the case for me. I am about to call soon to file and I just hope they can give me a rental. Ty for your reply. ✨
JoyfulSilence · 51-55, M
@Coralmist

Rental coverage was included in my insurance plan, but it was not automatic, I had to add it and it increased my premium a bit.

If you are not covered, perhaps they can still help set you up, but I presume you would have to pay? I do not know. Maybe you can give them an IOU, or put it on a credit card.

Of course, since you are not at fault I presume you could ask his insurance to pay for your rental.

But I do not really know. I assume every agent will know what to do and have your interests at heart. If they were unscrupulous I presume they would not stay in business long!

But stay vigilant. I never had problems with insurance, but did with one repair shop. They fixed a dent in a door yet it did not close flush with the body after. I complained and they took it back inside and made it flush. I wondered what sort of low standards they had that they would release it back to me in that state.

Go see a doctor / urgent care / emergency department. I know it will take most of today, but you need to medically document the injury. And make sure you report it to the doctors as a car accident.

My brother had an almost identical accident. Three cars. Unfortunately, he was #3 and pushed #2 into #1. The first two were stopped behind a school bus, he didn't see any of it (not paying attention) and hit the line of stopped cars without ever hitting his brakes.

This was also in Massachusetts (like I assume yours was). The car in the back of the line (my brother in this case) was responsible for all damages to all three cars even though he never touched car #1. Your car should be repaired completely and you should get a rental while it is being repaired.

🙏

@sarabee1995 Ty ...aww sorry about your brother's experience. I'm really dreading filing tomorrow because I've heard just so many things about it. I didn't go to ER with EMTs, I did feel fine ...I told them I think I had minor whiplash but that I was essentially ok. They said ok but if you feel pain later, you can head in. I did feel pain but it wasn't severe. Luckily most of it diminished today. I truly hope they can repair it. Ty so much 🪻
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
@Coralmist Eh... Don't feel bad about him. He has a habit of wrecking cars. Thank goodness he hasn't seriously hurt himself or anyone else yet.

I know getting seen will be a pain, but make sure you do it. If anything comes up later, this early documentation will ensure you are covered for it.
I had EXACTLY the same thing happen to me about 10 years ago.

-DO NOT talk to his insurance company when they call.... Instead "hire" a good accident injury attorney.
-DO NOT SHARE anything with the adjuster they will send out to look at your car. He works for them, not you. DO NOT cash the check he will give you!
-Here they have accident doctor clinics (Emergency chiropractic). Take the accident report # the ops gave you and go see them to get x-rays and start "whiplash" treatment.

LISTEN AND FOLLOW THE SDVICE OF YOUR ATTORNEY. He works for you.
@Coralmist The attorney generally will take your case for FREE. As in the will take a cut of what the guilty parties insurance co pays you to "settle your case".
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@Threepio Do you always need to get a lawyer?
Thrust · 56-60, M
@Coralmist Only for a bodily injury settlement
Yes, u will need to call ur insurance, probably already should have.
It's usually 4 or 5 days to get a copy of the accident report and u have to pay for that, like $5. Send that over to your insurance. Ur insurance should sue the other vehicles insurance for damages, injuries and rental vehicle.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@HappyCamper74 Unfortunately it happened at 5 pm Christmas eve, so all insurance companies closed today I assume. So next day to file is tomorrow. I just hope it goes ok , this process, because I'm dealing with TWO cars behind me.
@Coralmist u need to go ahead and write down every detail as to what happened while it is fresh on your mind. U will have to give detailed descriptions to ur insurance and probably the other two insurance companies too.
DrWatson · 70-79, M
Yes, I was once in exactly that kind of crash.

My insurance company was very helpful. They sorted it all out. I did not have to worry about the legalities.
deadgerbil · 26-30
You've been given the police report right? Contact your insurance and they will walk you through it. If your car is as bad as you say it is, the insurance company could just total it. No use in speculation until you actually contact them and get it to a repair shop for an estimate

@Blondily So glad you were ok.🪻 I didn't have injury physically but did have whiplash neck pain the next day. It has diminished now. I just hope I can get the back bumper fixed. I can't afford another newer car.
Blondily · F
@Coralmist Thank you!
You should get a personal attorney because you can be awarded for whiplash, (see your doctor for an exam, documentation) and damage to your car etc.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
Well, I'm glad you're okay enough to share the story with us.

I don't know what the law is in your state. Here in Oregon, drivers involved in an accident are expected to report it to the DMV, but I'm told in other states you don't have to. I'd start by looking that up.

The next thing to know is that even though you weren't at fault in the accident, your crooked аss insurance company is going to raise your rates. This is because you're now considered a higher risk, in spite of the fact that your driving habits haven't changed in the slightest, and the accident was the result of the Jeep owner. If you're on good enough terms with your insurance agent, you might be able to talk them out of it.

Oh, and before I forget, I know you're feeling okay now, but I do hope you let them check you out before you left the scene.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@LordShadowfire Ty for your tips and information 🌟 I truly hope my rates are not raised..I was sitting still, stopped, with directional on in appropriate lane, and they slammed into me. 😬 I am on good terms with them.. hope they can help me a bit. I just wonder if I'll get a rental car, if my car can be fixed or not, and if not, what will happen.
LordShadowfire · 46-50, M
@Coralmist Well, whoever is found to be at fault, that will be the person whose insurance company pays the others. Chances are they'll tell you your car is totaled, but you don't have to listen. Take your settlement, whatever it is, and see if somebody will repair it for that much.

Or if the car really is totaled, I guess start looking for a used one on Craigslist.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@LordShadowfire My friend was in a crash and it was completely totaled..they replaced it with new car. I guess we will see if it can be fixed... because I can't afford a new car. Ty again
WillaKissing · 56-60, M
Just thank God you were not hurt. Metal and plastic can be replaced, you can't.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@WillaKissing I'm very grateful , yes. I could've gotten a head injury or worse. I'm definitely not looking forward to all the steps to come for my car, but I'm so lucky overall. Ty Willa🫂
WillaKissing · 56-60, M
@Coralmist You are quite welcome.
Good luck with the process.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
Contact your insurance and do not delay. After that contact a doctor and get a health report. Then you should contact a lawyer. To deal with the insurance companies. All the insurance companies will attempt to delay, on the whole darn process.

If you are able to, money wise, to get the car out of impound, do so immediately no matter what the condition of the car is.

Impound companies charge daily. No lawyer will handle that. So even if it's fixable, you'll owe the impound company for storage.

It's all a huge money racket, for you to buy a new car.
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Thrust if she gets the car out of impound herself they will pay her back for any fees.

Get the car out of impound first is important! She simply can not afford to delay! It's daily increased!

Insurance companies WILL DELAY! This is multiple insurance companies.

It's why a lawyer is important as well. They will push the insurance companies to settle quickly.

It's a racket!
Thrust · 56-60, M
@DeWayfarer Her agent can tell her if impound fees fall to her. Every case I've seen the losing party pays it in addition to a settlement
DeWayfarer · 61-69, M
@Thrust in the meantime it gets higher and higher until it's the cost of a new car while they are settling amongst each other.
So sorry to hear that but I'm happy you are ok.
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@PiecingBabyFaceTogether Ty, 🪻I feel such anxiety going forward now with these claims and phone calls, but grateful I'm ok.
I hope you are ok. Call your insurance company, then goto a doctor for the whiplash.. and (sorry..) Get an attorney...
novaguy2u · 70-79, M
The second car, the rear one, obviously caused the accident. Your insurance company and the company of the guy that was shunted into you will both claim off the guy who caused the accident.
Oh my... Are you ok? ❤ hugs hows your neck today?
Coralmist · 41-45, F
@Alhamdulillah I am pretty much ok but developed whiplash pain. It sucks I told the insurance I was ok the following day of the crash, but whiplash can occur a few days later, and it did. Now I need to tell them it's pretty acute. Ty for asking, what a nightmare. I'm glad it wasn't worse.
@Coralmist Im so sorry to hear that, Coral but yeah, coukdve been worse and yeah, make sure you do tell the insurance company. Hopefully the pain will begin to subside in a few days ❤
Straylight · 31-35, F
Not me, but my wife when she was a teenager.
WillaKissing · 56-60, M
Call your insurance agent and they will walk you through the process.
