Have you ever driven a real race car? Felt the ground physically shake as the car sat there at idle?

robb65 · 56-60, M
I've been in the passenger seat of a drag car. Guy I once worked for got the idea he needed one, something about one of his cousins racing and he wanted to show them up. My boss was friends with a local businessman who had an early 70's Camaro he was tired of playing with so one afternoon I went with him to take a look. It was parked at a shop way out of town so "taking it for a spin" meant finding a reasonably straight stretch of county road and opening it up. Climbing in the car with his wasn't the smartest thing I ever did. The car had been professionally built but had changed hands a few times so no one was sure of the history, other than it had ran on a strip near here and was fast.

Typical of this particular person, he managed to "borrow" the car for a few months and as near as I can remember no money ever changed hands. He took it once to a track in another state where his cousins lived but there was a problem with an oil line so he didn't get to run, brought it back here, and parked it under a shed at a friends house until the owner wanted it back.

@robb65 Sadly that's the way it is. ☹️
robb65 · 56-60, M
@Stereoguy We didn't always get along but things got better once I was no longer depending on him for a paycheck. There's lots of funny stories and the owner of a lumber yard I deal with always ask "have you heard from the cajun lately?" I'll tell him the latest story I've heard and he'll shake his head and laugh.
Stereoguy · 56-60, M
@robb65 I understand. ☹️
A hellcat. It was factory but still, those suckers are no joke. I didn't race it or anything but I did launch it for fun at a few stoplights 😅

Amazing feeling
Stereoguy · 56-60, M
@ChiefWalksWith40oz I totally understand. I am the consummate car guy. It would be awesome if we could hang out and enjoy our collections. Go to Barrett Jackson. 🤗🤗🤗 I have always wanted to go. 🙂
@Stereoguy same. I go to car meets sometimes on the streets but they're risky & people can act dumb so it's rare that I do go. But I actually live in Arizona & Barrett Jackson takes place about 45 minutes away from me 😂 I still have never gone but I want to one day
Stereoguy · 56-60, M
@ChiefWalksWith40oz That is so cool!!! 🙂🙂🙂 We have a large motorhome. I would love to go. We live in Florida. They have the spring show in West Palm Beach. That is on the Atlantic side of the state. We are on the Gulf coast, but we could easily make the trip in a few hours.
Dainbramadge · 51-55, M
A 1966 Plymouth barracuda with a built to the max 340 in it.
Lord was that monster fast.
You didn't dare leave the doors open while I was idling for fear they would hit the ground from it rocking from the cam lobe. LOL
Eddiesolds · 56-60, M
@Dainbramadge Love it!
Stereoguy · 56-60, M
@Dainbramadge Awesome 👍😎
nedkelly · M
Ya mad ya bugger, driving a race car is very dangerous, not as dangerous as a mad wife on the warpath 😁
smiler2012 · 56-60, M
@nedkelly only one i nicked from a car show court ned 😆
WindTherapy · 56-60, M
Years ago I used to race dirt track. Not sure the ground vibrated under it but there was a pulse in the air for sure. I miss those day. :)
Stereoguy · 56-60, M
@WindTherapy That would be great. Would you rebuild the motor making it more high performance.
WindTherapy · 56-60, M
@Stereoguy Probably not. If I were to do anything it might be a cam to give it a little more lope and low end. But I'm a Sunday cruiser with nowhere to be in a hurry when driving something like that.
Stereoguy · 56-60, M
@WindTherapy A little lope is great! And driving it out for pizza on a Saturday night is where it's at. 👍🙂🙂🙂
bowman81 · M
Yes
I hot lapped a Ford GT-40 AT CHARLOTTE MOTOR SPEEDWAY.
Stereoguy · 56-60, M
@bowman81 Oh wow! What was it like?
bowman81 · M
@Stereoguy Very fast and very loud. LOL. Very cramped inside, I was too tall for the headroom while wearing helmet and with the rollcage. It was built to fit a shorter guy than me. The race versions are not all adjustable, just lightweight shell seats fixed in place.

They tell me I touched 175 on the straight but I chickened out in the corners so my lap times weren't that impressive. The Motor sits right behind you with a lightweight plexi screen so the engine noise + road and wind makes it deafening. I only had on the helmet should have had earplugs as well.
Stereoguy · 56-60, M
@bowman81 I know. My car was a drag car. The seat and the cage are fit to you. Absolutely no adjustment available. How did it feel hitting 175 mph on the straight? Did you feel like you were flying?
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
Oh I think my grandmother use to be a race car driver in another life does That count?
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
@Stereoguy in the family her van was considered as a race car. I got to drive it just once before she died like 20 year's ago. I still remember driving it
Stereoguy · 56-60, M
@smileylovesgaming Did it scoot? 😎
smileylovesgaming · 31-35, F
@Stereoguy I say so the stories I heard
I've owned a couple of "ground shakers" in the past.

But have now come to realize that owning and maintaining one is like throwing money in a dark hole on the driveway.......
Stereoguy · 56-60, M
@Threepio Lol!!! To true! To true! 😂😂😂
BeachGirl47 · 26-30, F
A cousin of mine owns a pro modified 57 Chevy and I sat in the seat as it was idling. Was awesome.
Stereoguy · 56-60, M
@BeachGirl47 So he didn't let you make a pass in it??? 😉
TheDisciplinarian · 56-60, M
It was good
The Track is Changed a Bit..more safetand Actually
Most the cars running at the Glen are Actually slower.

Wish they would zBring F1 back to the Glen
I Don't care for the Track in Austin Tx ( Actually i Hate that Track)

I Think it may have been good
Had they Run the F1 race in Hudsom county nj by the water-front
Though that Fell through

The Glen's main straight was Cool
Though you had to Slow down quite a bit
Yet that made it Fun
Stereoguy · 56-60, M
@TheDisciplinarian That's awesome! Do you still drive?
FrozenWasteland · 61-69, M
Road race, ice race -- more of a sports car thing. The ground doesn't exactly shake from three hundred horsepower. Fun to drive, though. Especially on ice.

I have sat in a couple of moderately impressive drag cars, but I've never driven one in anger. One friend was willing to let me make a couple of (careful) passes, but I just don't fit in his car. Impressive to stand beside at launch, though, that's for sure.
Stereoguy · 56-60, M
@FrozenWasteland Drag cars are what I had. Driving one in anger would definitely have been a mistake.
Rooster · M
Well, if you consider a "Funny" car as a race car, then Yes I've driven one and felt the rumble of pure power before!
Stereoguy · 56-60, M
@Rooster It is really awesome isn't it. You stand there withe the car at idle and the ground physically shakes. Then you climb in, strap up and hang on for the ride of your life. 😎
Rooster · M
@Stereoguy And a nice big wheelie to start!!!
Stereoguy · 56-60, M
@Rooster I was doing 80 mph before the front wheels touched down.
Get one and let your wife and myself enjoy the race.
Stereoguy · 56-60, M
@sspec Plus my wife can't stand for very long or walk any distance. There are no sidewalks here either until you get into town.
@Stereoguy I realise that thru a few of your comments. Be by Her side. Always.
Stereoguy · 56-60, M
@sspec I am. She is doing better right now. We are actually talking about taking the motorhome home out for a few days. 🙂
nope, doubt I ever will... It's not really a complaint of mine about the thrill some might find from, I'm more gentle and I'm guessing more of this world needs not celebrating these things?
TheDisciplinarian · 56-60, M
Its a little tough now
Due to several Illnesses
I Don't know...Once All strapped in..
One feels one can Drive Mark 1 or better. ( lol )

I'de like to give the Ring a whirl
Stereoguy · 56-60, M
@TheDisciplinarian I was into drag racing. I am not sure I could handle the really powerful ones anymore, but something mild like a 10 second machine would be fun to play with. 🙂
likesnatural · 70-79, M
I have. In high a friend and I had a Super Stock racing car. He let us take it for a drive one. The noise and rumbling was awesome!
Stereoguy · 56-60, M
@likesnatural That's fabulous! 🙂
Eddiesolds · 56-60, M
Ive only been a passenger. The car is a beast.
Stereoguy · 56-60, M
@Eddiesolds It's wild isn't it. 🙂
Eddiesolds · 56-60, M
@Stereoguy always. Yes! Love it!
TheDisciplinarian · 56-60, M
Yes

At Walkins Glen

Not a Drag car though
Stereoguy · 56-60, M
@TheDisciplinarian How did you like it? What was it like?
FurryFace · 61-69, M
no , but a space rocket taking off would beat that
Stereoguy · 56-60, M
@FurryFace Yes it would!
GJOFJ3 · 61-69, M
Yes, it’s awesome. There is nothing quite like it!
Stereoguy · 56-60, M
@GJOFJ3 You are definitely right about that. 😎
jackson55 · M
Yes, several times.
Stereoguy · 56-60, M
@jackson55 Any of them yours?
sarabee1995 · 26-30, F
Stereoguy · 56-60, M
@sarabee1995 Yes I have. I have owned two of them and campaigned them for a few years.
