is it normal for gas stations to put a hold of $75 on your credit or debit card?

Ive been noticing this lately and it seems very odd to me..
meJess · F
If you pay afterwards, it's to make sure you have enough to pay. The hold goes after you pay.

@meJess which makes sense because if it charged you after you could just leave 🤣

It's better to use a credit card as you have fraud protection with it. with debit cards, fraudsters can drain your entire bank account and there is no recovery of the stolen money. tens of thousands of dollars can be drained from your account in one fraudulent transaction with a debit card. 💵

@SW-User you pay off the credit card each month. I have tens of thousands of dollars in my checking account and if a crook tapped into a debit card transaction they would have access to all that money and no way for me to get the money back from them. while with a credit card, you have fraud protection. you get the statements each month that shows what you spent money on. too many merchant payment systems have been hacked. too many crooked waiters at restaurants copy your credit card number when you hand them the card to pay your restaurant bill. your credit or debit card should be in your sight at all times even if that means you get up from your table and go with the waiter to swipe your card at the card reader. a lot of identity theft happens when the waiter copies your information of the card too. paying cash helps a lot and helps you launder the off the books money you make so there is no paper trail of your spending to alert the IRS to your true income. 💵

@trackboy you sir are a wise man!! I will consider all this for the future ty

@SW-User @SW-User yes will keep your checking account safe that way so it does not get drained. remember when you go to buy something. do you really need it? what use do you have for it and what are you going to use it for? will it be a piece of clutter that will have to be thrown out so you will have room around the house? 😺
SW-User
When you use credit yes, especially if you pay at the pump … always pay debit
SW-User
@Stillwaiting that may be the case but debit is still better to use to avoid credit cards
@SW-User Financially, there is no real benefit to use of debit if you manage your credit card spending and pay your balance monthly. Plus you lose out on points/reward programs the credit cards offer.
SW-User
@Stillwaiting hmm you got me there
It depends on the gas station but yeah. I avoid certain gas stations and try to use cash because they can authorize for up to double the bill and hold it until it clears. It might not come back for days.
SW-User
@Spoiledbrat exactly it sucks
They do it as a security measure because they don't know how much you're going to pump. @SW-User

For what? Where I live by law we have to pay for the gas before we pump it. Preauthorize a said amount pump and get charged for the gas you take. It is to prevent theft and murder since most gas is purchased with debit/credit cards not cash.
SW-User
@hippyjoe1955 its self service so it asks for my card i put in it and it says approved then i pump the gas
SW-User
If the hold lasted longer than a few hours i'd be concerned.
SW-User
@SW-User Hotels and car rental companies do that here but they hold it for 2 weeks to a month. Hopefully the fuel places won't decide to do the same.
SW-User
@SW-User wow thats a long time
SW-User
@SW-User Yeah, it's way too long especially if you have a debit card and worse, if you stay in a few hotel within a month you can end up with over a thousand dollars on hold.
eBay now holds funds for a while also. I made a sale a few days back but my money won’t hit my bank until the 2nd week of Feb. I think it has to do with verification of funding sources.
SW-User
@soar2newhighs i stopped using ebay i dont remember why but it wasnt for that reason
I’d be checking with my credit card company if I were in such a circumstance.
SW-User
@soar2newhighs it was a debit card not credit i also found it weird that i wasnt able to process my debit card as credit like i usually do to bypass the pin..
@SW-User Again even though it is a debit card, contact the financial institution who issued the card and find out about this.
SW-User
@soar2newhighs ill give it until midnight
That’s odd! I didn’t notice that…is this recent?
SW-User
@Vivaci for me yeah especially $75
You could check with the bank. @SW-User
SW-User
@Vivaci i will wait one more day before checking with them
SW-User
Seems a little high, but not uncommon
SW-User
@SW-User right! 2 out of the last 3 gas stations are doing it and idk why
Virgo79 · 61-69, M
Cash is best🙂
SW-User
@Virgo79 yeah but i have capital one and there are only a few atms around so that would be more gas wasted just to get cash thats why i stick to cards
Virgo79 · 61-69, M
@SW-User capital one is among the better ones.
I don't have any
SW-User
@Virgo79 agreed they are good I get both of my checks 2 days early
carpediem · 61-69, M
SW-User
@carpediem it does yeah but ill wait until midnight

Seems a little high for a hold, but putting a hold on some amount is fairly normal.

This is normal protocol in response to an increase in credit card/debit card fraud happening at the gas pumps.[/c]

Actually, you're categorically wrong like I keep telling you. The holds were never displayed at the pumps until recently.. NOT the 1990's! 🙄, although the holds themselves were actually invisibly in place within the credit card company database and viewable by the cardholder online when logged into one's banking information.

Your age relative to mine is irrelevant. When you are unfamiliar with credit cards and banking protocol, you can go your entire lifetime and remain inept at most things related to banking which you are clearly showing me about yourself.[/c]
@swirlie Not what I was claiming .. I'm done with you.
SW-User
@Stillwaiting @swirlie sorry guys didnt mean to cause this much hassle
