is it normal for gas stations to put a hold of $75 on your credit or debit card?

Ive been noticing this lately and it seems very odd to me..

This is normal protocol in response to an increase in credit card/debit card fraud happening at the gas pumps.[/c]
@swirlie Its been this way for years

Yes it has because for years, there has been an increase in credit card/debit card fraud happening at the gas pumps. Didn't you know that? It all started with gas stations, not Walmart and the like![/c]
@swirlie Yes, I did .. and I knew it wasn't a recent response to such concerns. Been around as long or longer than you have.

The recent response I'm talking about is the recently adopted banking protocol of posting the 'held' amount from a gas station on a credit/debit card in one's account until the actual amount of the credit/debit goes through the banking system at midnight each night.

Prior to recently, those 'held' amounts (which are pre-authorized purchase amounts) were never posted at the gas pump viewing screen nor available for viewing online, but have always been there but remaining out of view to the account holder for years.

As of recently, that 'held' amount is now indicated in full view right at the gas pumps themselves as well as indicated immediately online from the moment the transaction is made. [/c]

@SW-User Depends on what you drive. I've had $80-$100 fuel ups under both Biden and Obama administrations in a full sized SUV/pick-up truck.
@swirlie Lot of after the fact 'splaining there ..

Then what's your excuse for knowing less about banking protocol than I do?[/c]

I can't help it that you don't know what you're talking about, so I'm just trying to help you to understand. [/c]
@swirlie Look ditzy .. the comment was that the holds have been being placed for longer than you have been around.

Actually, you are totally wrong. The 'holds' have only been in place for pre-authorized amounts for just over 15 years now, which are held until midnight.

The held amount then disappears when the actual amount is credited/debited to the account at midnight's reconciliation. Too bad you don't know what you're talking about![/c]

@Stillwaiting i drive a 2012 toyota corolla the fuel tank is 11 gallons

@swirlie u are correct i just dont remember the hold being that high but i will wait until midnight to see
@swirlie The holds have been around longer than 15 yrs, they go back into the latter 1990s once pay at the pump was more widely adopted. Over time, amounts and durations of the holds changed.

I was an adult and buying stuff on my own before you were born.
I know from experience with it and not just looking stuff up on Google like you are doing.

Actually, you're categorically wrong like I keep telling you. The holds were never displayed at the pumps until recently.. NOT the 1990's! 🙄, although the holds themselves were actually invisibly in place within the credit card company database and viewable by the cardholder online when logged into one's banking information.

Your age relative to mine is irrelevant. When you are unfamiliar with credit cards and banking protocol, you can go your entire lifetime and remain inept at most things related to banking which you are clearly showing me about yourself.[/c]
@swirlie Not what I was claiming .. I'm done with you.
