is it normal for gas stations to put a hold of $75 on your credit or debit card?

Ive been noticing this lately and it seems very odd to me..

For what? Where I live by law we have to pay for the gas before we pump it. Preauthorize a said amount pump and get charged for the gas you take. It is to prevent theft and murder since most gas is purchased with debit/credit cards not cash.

@hippyjoe1955 its self service so it asks for my card i put in it and it says approved then i pump the gas
