Age of consent

In Nigeria the age of consent is 11. 12 in the Philippines and Angola, and 13 in Burkina Faso, Comoros, Niger, and Japan. In the U.S. It’s 18.

If there was a universal age of consent, what would you all think it should be?

Some people develop quicker than others but we can't really create and enforce laws on a case by case basis. There needs to be a hard line drawn in the sand. Realistically everyone is physically developed by 17.

Its 16 here in Australia, I think 18 is probably better. I think age of consent in those countries is probably related to marriage age.

I think 18 is a reasonable age. Anything lower than 16 gives me the creeps, to be honest. Exception for 15 could be made for "near age" but I wouldn't really consider that wise.

@DarlingSelah not a bad idea ..25 would be raising the bar considerably. Making it extremely difficult for sexual predators to get away with coercion.

Also should she fall pregnant,a young lady of 25 would be better equipped to raise a child or make an informed decision re other options.

Another circ consent should be given younger 16+ years is if they are a married couple 💑

For obvious reasons lol .

I think the theme here is young ppl making informed decisions and not being taken advantage of.

@JennyGa @Kae20 16-25 near age wouldn't be too bad. 16 could be with 17 or 18. 17 could be with 19. 18 could go up to 21, 19 to 23. Go up two years for every year after. Then at 25 of they still want to seek after sixty year olds then more power to them.

Age of consent is a stupid concept. If both agree willingly and neither is in a position to coerce the other then no one should be prosecuted no matter the age difference. That said, it's up to parents to police the behavior of their children.

I think that consensual sexual acts should not be criminalised between those of same age or up to two years difference if both are 15 or over. So two 15yr olds shouldn't be committing a crime by having sex, nor should a 15yr old and a 17yr old, that should be left to the parents to govern. Nobody over the age of 18 should be able to have sexual relations with anyone under the age of 18.

That's my opinion.
