What's the best way to defend your home ?

A home security system?
A dog?
A gun?

According to an ex-burglar, it's window film. Stops them putting your window out quietly.

summersong · F
Bear traps and lasers.
Nimbus · M
@summersong That would work :)
JoeMW · 51-55, M
Rose bushes or cactus under every window
cherokeepatti · 61-69, F
@JoeMW In rural farms in Morocco they plant a lot of prickly pear cactuses for natural fences & then get to eat the fruit. Also some type of thorn plant that they cut and cement to the top of their rock walls around their homes...and I’ve seen glass shards cemented to the top of tall rock walls around homes in cities there.
Nimbus · M
@JoeMW Might smell good too :)

@PainfulTruth Jack was 100% patriotic American, acting out of a desire to spare Jackie Kennedy from a painful court trial, (not to mention sparing the Dallas DA from a ton of paper work)

I find cauldrons of boiling oil to be quite effective.
Nimbus · M
@TheSirfurryanimalWales So that's how they rid themselves of the used oil in the fish & chip shop in Cardiff ;)
JoeMW · 51-55, M
The Romans used flocks of geese as watch dogs... watch geese i guess
Nimbus · M
@JoeMW That's unusual.
JoeMW · 51-55, M
@Nimbus they're noisy bastards and will bit the hell out of your legs, trust me, I've encountered geese before
Nimbus · M
@JoeMW 😁
NewKidInTown · 51-55, M
A moat and cauldrons of heated tar!
Nimbus · M
@NewKidInTown Sounds good to me :)
ArtyFischel · 36-40, M
I have all three.

Edit: Okay, I have a cat. She's a mean cat, though.
Nimbus · M
@ArtyFischel Good for you 👍️
Elessar · 26-30, M
Tall fence with a hedge behind (if you don't mind the aesthetics, also barbwire), alarmed windows and doors, armored external doors, geese (lol), IP cameras, lights/loudspeakers/smoke generators (dissuasive). A well-hidden safe for keeping valuables, and in the case they still manage to get in, a gun or at the very least a bat or a golf club

I called the cops when this fella was breaking in at 3am once. They didn't get there til 9am. They asked what went down. I said don't worry about it. The ambulance came and got him at 3:30am.

@LUVELACE 😝
4meAndyou · F
If someone REALLY wants to get in, they will. Unless you have steel shutters on every entrance, most homes are not really defensible, because there are too many ways to get in.

The best defense for someone like me is a security system so that all those who enter are recorded, an interior alarm system that will ring loudly independent of the building's electric system, and a can of hairspray and a barbecue lighter.

😈
Nimbus · M
@4meAndyou lol @
and a can of hairspray and a barbecue lighter

Trust is quite helpful. My door remains open.
Nimbus · M
@helenS Awwwww, sounds good but is it practical?
helenS · 36-40, F
@Nimbus I'm a member of a huge family, and nobody who abused my trust would survive. 🗡️

NewKidInTown · 51-55, M
@JoeMW That and jazz 😎
JoeMW · 51-55, M
@NewKidInTown Jazz is great I was just about to @helenS that jazz is the true heir to post-romanticist music. :)

I think it was Mark Twain who said "Wagner's music is better than it sounds" I'll grant that to Schoenberg ;-)
NewKidInTown · 51-55, M
@JoeMW all I know is when Jazz is playing in the background, at some point I’ll look up to find the source of the annoying sounds, and it will ultimately be jazz
WillaKissing · 56-60, M
I have two Rottweilers in my home that amass to a 260 pound problem for intruders; this gives me time to open the gun safe and load a gun to finish off the intruder, and if I come home to a half eaten intruder. I follow through with the gun safe and finishing off the intruder.

PS: Having a farm and pig lot helps with the remains.
Nimbus · M
@Pinkstarburst I agree ;)
YumaJames26 · 26-30, M
Alarm your home...but also have a small arsenal in your house, loaded and easily accessible, like I do.
Nimbus · M
@YumaJames26 Noted ;)

Shotgun, Birdshot, birdshot, buckshot.
Dancingxghost · 36-40, M
@SW-User more like the type of shell, birdshot won't kill an intruder, you pump to rounds to put it down, if it's still a threat a buckshot will stop it for good.
SW-User
@Dancingxghost 🙄 It was partially meant as a joke... I figured you were not talking about a break-action shotgun.
Dancingxghost · 36-40, M
@SW-User ohhh..well I flew right over my head to be honest lol.
TexChik · F
The exterior of your home should be well lit to discourage a break in . A dog is always a good deterrent. Reinforced door jams Are always a good idea , and the of course you main method of defense . Some have a safe room , some a shot gun ... I use my Glock. If someone breaks in I have to assume they know I’m in there with my family ... so no matter what ... when I get a good target I’m am going to shoot them . If my hubby is home too...we are going to shoot them .
jeancolby · 31-35, F
@TexChik Good, way to go.
Nimbus · M
@TexChik Good advice ;)
SW-User
All of the above. I have read so many articles about accidental shootings that I'm not sure if guns are the best option.

I have one of those super bright flashlights and a dog.
Nimbus · M
@SW-User Yes,all 3 are needed.
SW-User
@Nimbus I have guns but they are locked up. I'm in a safe enough neighborhood that it's not worth the risk of accidentally shooting somebody.

Just stand out in front without a mask and sneeze. No one will come near your place.

@shuhak Topical! :)
JesseInTX · 51-55, M
Cameras, alarm and if you get past that an array of handguns and shotguns strategically hidden around the the house.

@PainfulTruth Awww, I wish mine was like that.
TexChik · F
From what?
Nimbus · M
@TexChik Anyone who wants to attack it and the family for any reason.
TexChik · F
@Nimbus I am a great shot , I have lots of training and several mags. I’m going to kill them and then notify my attorney after I report it . It’s well within the law in my state and it’s kill or be killed .
Nimbus · M
@TexChik I thought it might go that way, lol
Tres13 · 51-55, M
